Book Evaluation of Rodent Bait Station Use Under Controlled Conditions

Download or read book Evaluation of Rodent Bait Station Use Under Controlled Conditions written by DE. Kaukeinen and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method was developed to evaluate the responses of groups of wild Norway rats to bait stations. Groups of rats were first acclimated to test arenas of 5.6 m2 which each contained abundant harborage in the form of a covered pallet, drain pipes, and masonry blocks. Activity levels were measured daily by four methods: bait consumption, tracks, fecal counts, and motion detector (actimeter) counts. When activity had stabilized, one bait station containing an attractive nontoxic food and additional actimeters were added to each arena. Daily observations revealed changes in activity around the exterior of stations, time until entry, and the initiation and quantity of consumption of the station bait (unpoisoned EPA meal). In tests using the protocol, replicated comparisons were made of eight "tamper-proof" bait stations having various degrees of design complexity. In general, simpler designs showed more rapid and greater utilization and bait consumption. The method has application to evaluations with house mice and for studies of toxic baits in particular station designs.

Book Bait Station Preferences of Ship Rats

Download or read book Bait Station Preferences of Ship Rats written by E. B. Spurr and published by . This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Department of Conservation (DOC) surveillance programmes to detect rodent invasions on rodent-free islands currently involve observation of rodent interference with toxic baits in bait stations. Different DOC Conservancies use different types of bait station. We monitored the behavioural responses of 24 wildcaught captive ship rats (Rattus rattus) to four currently used bait station types; yellow plastic pipe, wooden box ("rat motel"), wooden tunnel, and white plastic Philproof bait stations. The bait stations contained non-toxic bait similar to the toxic bait used in surveillance programmes. More than 75% of the rats entered the yellow plastic pipe, wooden box, and wooden tunnel bait stations, but fewer than 10% entered the Philproof bait stations. Rats ate bait from the first three bait station types but not from the latter. The average amount of bait eaten per night by the rats that ate bait (0.8 g) was not enough for a lethal dose for 50% of the population if the baits had contained 20 ppm, or even 50 ppm, brodifacoum. On the basis of these results, DOC should use yellow plastic pipe, wooden box, or wooden tunnel bait stations rather than Philproof bait stations for surveillance for ship rats. However, other bait station types and the responses of kiore (R. exulans) and house mouse (Mus musculus) to different bait stations should be tested before any final decision is made on the best type to use in multispecies rodent surveillance programmes.

Book The Handbook of New Zealand Mammals

Download or read book The Handbook of New Zealand Mammals written by Carolyn King and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2021-01-20 with total page 1027 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of New Zealand Mammals is the only definitive reference on all the land-breeding mammals recorded in the New Zealand region (including the New Zealand sector of Antarctica). It lists 65 species, including native and exotic, wild and feral, living and extinct, residents, vagrants and failed introductions. It describes their history, biology and ecology, and brings together comprehensive and detailed information gathered from widely scattered or previously unpublished sources. The description of each species is arranged under standardised headings for easy reference. Because the only native land-breeding mammals in New Zealand are bats and seals, the great majority of the modern mammal fauna comprises introduced species, whose arrival has had profound effects both for themselves and for the native fauna and flora. The book details changes in numbers and distribution for the native species, and for the arrivals it summarises changes in habitat, diet, numbers and size in comparison with their ancestral stocks, and some of the problems they present to resource managers. For this third edition, the text and references have been completely updated and reorganised into Family chapters. The colour section includes 14 pages of artwork showing all the species described and their main variations, plus two pages of maps.

The authors merge classic studies and contemporary research to give students a full picture of the evolving field of comparative cognition. Engaging students in the discipline from its roots in animal learning and evolutionary biology through to current research, the chapters cover both controlled laboratory and comparative cross-species studies in the natural environment. This approach provides students with complementary ethological and neurobiological perspectives on cognition. Feature boxes encourage active and engaged learning, giving a deeper understanding of topics discussed in the main text. These are supported by end-of-chapter questions to check understanding and encourage wider thinking around topics. Online resources include solutions to questions in the book, advanced material, PowerPoint lecture slides and additional questions, all available at www.cambridge.org/cognition.

Book Anticoagulant Rodenticides and Wildlife

Download or read book Anticoagulant Rodenticides and Wildlife written by Nico W. van den Brink and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commensal rodents pose health risks and cause substantial damage to property and food supplies. Rats have also invaded islands and pose a serious threat to native wildlife, particularly raptors and seabirds. Estimates of total damage from introduced rats range into the billions of dollars in developed countries. This book aims to provide a state-of-the-art overview of the scientific advancements in the assessment of exposure, effects and risks that currently used rodenticides may pose to non-target organisms in the environment, along with practical guidance for characterization of hazards. This will be discussed in relation to their efficacy, and the societal needs for rodent control, and discussion of risk mitigation and development of alternatives. The flow in the book is planned as: a. introduction and setting the scene b. problem description (risks and effects on non-targets and secondary poisoning, development of resistance) c. ; alternatives, regulation and risk mitigation d. conclusions and recommendations

Book Scents that matter from olfactory stimuli to genes behaviors and beyond

Download or read book Scents that matter from olfactory stimuli to genes behaviors and beyond written by Markus Fendt and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2016-06-19 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scents can carry a lot of important information about the environment, conspecifics and other species. While some of these scents are positively related, as the odor of food, mating partners, or familiar conspecifics, other scents are associated with negative situations and events, e.g. the occurrence of a predator, an aggressive territorial conspecific or spoiled food. The present research topic is focused on such “scents that matter”, i.e., scents that are crucial for the survival of an organism. Since many years, the importance of scents always attracts scientists to investigate how scents affect the behavior of mammals, via which mechanisms scents are perceived and how scents modulate neural circuitries responsible for behavior. We believe that this research topic gives a nice overview on current ‘olfactory research.’ Many of the contributions are focused on scents with aversive effects, i.e. kairomones or pheromones that warn about potential threats. These studies range from research articles identifying new active odor components of predator odors, describing the induced behavioral changes and the underlying neuroanatomical and neurochemical mechanisms, to review articles summarizing the findings of the last decades on this field. Other articles are focused on the effects of scents in social behaviors or on associative learning. This research topic also represents nicely the current combination of methodological approaches in ‘olfactory research’: cell biologists, geneticists, behavioral pharmacologists, neuroanatomists, and computational modelers work effectively together to unravel the mechanisms of how scents matters in humans and animals.

Book A Review of the Current Knowledge of Rodent Behaviour in Relation to Control Devices

Download or read book A Review of the Current Knowledge of Rodent Behaviour in Relation to Control Devices written by B. Kay Clapperton and published by Science & Technical Publishing Department of Conservation. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A recent review of techniques used to detect and control the four introduced rodent species found on the New Zealand mainland and islands (house mice Mus musculus, ship rats Rattus rattus, Norway rats Rattus norvegicus and kiore Rattus exulans) identified the need for better understanding of rodent behaviour. This report provides a review of the published literature on rodent behaviour in relation to control devices, especially bait stations and baits. The review is based on searches of computer databases and information from key researchers on: taste preferences, meal size, neophobia, feeding behaviour, movements, home ranges and territoriality, bait shyness, aversion, resistance, odours, and colour preference. Other aspects of rodent behaviour, including responses to repellents, sounds and traps, are also briefly summarised.
