Book The Corporation and the Twentieth Century

Download or read book The Corporation and the Twentieth Century written by Richard N. Langlois and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-27 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Over the course of most of the twentieth century, new technologies drove increasing diversification and specialization within the economy. Du Pont, for example, which invented nylon during the Depression, managed the complexity of widespread diversification by pioneering the decentralized multidivisional organizational structure, which was almost universally adopted in large American firms after World War II. Whereas in the nineteenth century there had been just a handful of employees at their Wilmington headquarters, by 1972 there were perhaps 10,000 managers inhabiting a vast complex at the same location. The conventional wisdom is that this huge trend withdrew large swaths of the American economy from the realm of the free market and entrusted them to a new class of professional managers who had at their disposal increasingly powerful scientific methods of accounting and forecasting. It was the superior ministrations of these managers, apparently, not relative prices, that equilibrated supply and demand and made sure that goods flowed smoothly from raw materials to the final consumer. Economic historian Richard Langlois argues that it wasn't so simple. The Corporation and the Twentieth Century is an accessible account of American business enterprise and administrative planning, looking at both the rise and demise of managerial coordination, and the history of antitrust policy in this context. Offering an authoritative counterpoint to Alfred Chandler's classic The Visible Hand, Langlois shows how historic events in the twentieth century came together to drastically change the organization of American businesses. Contrary to the beliefs of some business historians, he maintains that large managerial corporations arose not because of their superiority, but as a result of systematic technological changes and larger historic forces, and that post-war events such as the Vietnam War and the fall of Bretton Woods culminated in the resurgence of market coordination, in the institutional innovations of deregulation, and in the creation of decentralized new technology. Controversially, Langlois argues that those antitrust policies viewed as successes in the past are in fact failures, and holds that there was never a period during which antitrust kept size, concentration or monopoly at bay"--

Book Dick Tracy and American Culture

Download or read book Dick Tracy and American Culture written by Garyn G. Roberts and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2003-08-28 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October 1931, Dick Tracy made his debut on the pages of the Detroit Mirror. Since then America's most famous crime fighter has tangled with a variety of protagonists from locations as diverse as the inner city and outer space, all the time maintaining the moral high ground while reflecting American popular culture. Through extensive research and interviews with Chester Gould (the creator of "Dick Tracy"), his assistants, Dick Locher (the current artist), Max Allan Collins (who scripted the stories for more than 15 years) and many others associated with the strip, Dick Tracy as a cultural icon emerges. The strips use of both innovative and established police methods and the true-to-life portrayals of Tracy's family and fellow cops are detailed. The artists behind the strip are fully revealed and Dick Tracy paraphernalia and the 1990 movie Dick Tracy are discussed. Dick Tracy's appearances in other media--books, comics, radio, movie serials, "B" movies, television dramas, and animated cartoons--are fully covered.

Book Fifty Southern Writers Before 1900

Download or read book Fifty Southern Writers Before 1900 written by Robert Bain and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1987-09-18 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection deserves a long review in order to get the attention it has earned. But how would a reviewer do rounded justice in, say, five hundred words to fifty entries by fifty different scholar-critics on `Southerners whose careers ended before 1900 or thereabouts'? Furthermore, each entry was required to follow a five-part pattern: `a biographical sketch, a discussion of major themes, an assessment of the scholarship . . . a chronological list of the author's works, and a bibliography of selected criticism.' That pattern reinforces a reference-work effect that the precise and experienced editors intended. Only a pedant will quible--yet will also regulary use the book and send students to it. It will outlast any reviewer now alive. American Literature A companion volume to Fifty Southern Writers After 1900, this collection focuses on the work of writers whose careers ended before or about 1900, whose works are often anthologized, and whose writing figures prominently in the history of Southern letters. Each essay, written by a specialist in the field, contains five parts: a biographical sketch, a discussion of the author's major themes, an assessment of the scholarship on the author's works, a chronological list of works, and a bibliography of selected criticism. The selected essays treat the individual writers in substantial detail and offer a fresh attempt to estimate the achievements of the authors included as well as a valuable assessment of the secondary work and scholarship to date.

Book Readings in Advertising Society and Consumer Culture

Download or read book Readings in Advertising Society and Consumer Culture written by Roxanne Hovland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-18 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of classic and contemporary articles provides context for the study of advertising by exploring the historical, economic, and ideological factors that spawned the development of a consumer culture. It begins with articles that take an institutional and historical perspective to provide background for approaching the social and ethical concerns that evolve around advertising. Subsequent sections then address the legal and economic consequences of life in a material culture; the regulation of advertising in a culture that weighs free speech against the needs of society; and the ethics of promoting materialism to consumers. The concluding section includes links to a variety of resources such as trade association codes of ethics, standards and guidelines for particular types of advertising, and information about self-regulatory organizations.
