Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yangtze River dolphins, also known as Baiji, have splashed in the waters of Chinas Yangtze River for millions of years. The Chinese people have always loved these mammals. They considered the Baiji to be a beautiful part of their river, and they have told many stories about them. Today, the Yangtze is a very different place. Trash floats in the water, and toxic chemicals pollute it. Thousands of boats travel up and down the river every day, and people use dangerous fishing equipment with sharp rolling hooks. The Yangtze River is no longer a safe place for the Baiji to live. Most of them have died out. Scientists worry that it might be too late for these dolphins. Is there any way to save them?

Book Conservation of the Chinese River Dolphin

Download or read book Conservation of the Chinese River Dolphin written by Jian Yang and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chinese River Dolphin Lipotes vexillifer (or Baiji) is one of the world's rarest freshwater cetaceans, with a population of only 200 remaining worldwide. It occurs only along a 1600 kilometre stretch of the Yangtze River, where it has been affected over the past decades by industrial and agricultural pollution, river traffic, and especially by fishing. The Department of River Dolphin Research has adopted a threefold approach to Baiji conservation: a) studies for captive breeding and reproductive biology, b) re-establishing of refuges for captive breeding, and c), the establishing of semi-natural reserves. Studies have been carried out since the 1970s, and refuges have been established in the 1980s.Recently, steps have been undertaken to establish the first Baiji reserve in Swan Oxbow Lake.
