Book Nini Towok s Spinning Wheel

Download or read book Nini Towok s Spinning Wheel written by Rens Heringa and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1976 Dutch textile specialist Rens Heringa first visited Kerek in rural East Java and discovered a region where--unlike the rest of Java--the full range of textiles with woven patterning, as well as the only batik still made on handwoven cotton cloth, continued to be produced for local use. Each type of cloth made in Kerek is created for a specific purpose--to be worn by a person of a particular age, social, or residential group; to serve in life-cycle events such as marriage or funerals; to act as a focal point in agricultural ceremonies or curing rites. The functions, techniques, patterning, and especially the color combinations of the cloth all form part of a highly structured and elaborate system of belief that is remarkably integrated with the community's social organization, mythology, and ritual practices. Remnants of similarly integrated systems of belief are known from many parts of Java, but by the late 20th century the full system could be observed only in Kerek. Batik from Kerek today represents the antecedents of the courtly and urban batik found in collections around the world.

This book was released on 2015-08-16 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The core purpose of this distinctive book is to offer academics working in higher education practical support in achieving formal accreditation of their teaching practice with the Higher Education Academy (HEA). It maps a range of key themes against the UKPSF (United Kingdom Professional Standards Framework) and invites readers to engage with the all-important dimensions of practice. This book is relevant both to those who are in the process of preparing an application for an HEA fellowship and to those who are preparing assignments they might be producing for a PG Cert (HE) programme. The book explains the dimensions of practice in detail and offers readers suggestions for ways in which they might engage with particular aspects of the UK PSF at the end of each section and thus evidence the quality of their teaching practice. Each section also offers suggestions on ways to develop teaching as related to the themes. Its distinctive features include: Linking explicitly to the UK PSF (UK Professional Standards Framework) and offering practical advice to those making a fellowship application. Integrating this practical element with some of the wider debates about the purpose of higher education Incorporating a thread of student engagement throughout the book, including students' own perspectives on the themes of the book. Not only will the book support academics following an accreditation route, the book will also be a useful companion text on taught courses since the UK PSF is the overarching framework for people working in HE in a teaching capacity. Whether you are working in higher education or working in college based higher education then this is the book for you.

But their newly discovered bliss is shattered when Carol is forced to choose between her child and her lover. Book Storytelling in Early Childhood

Download or read book Storytelling in Early Childhood written by Teresa Cremin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Storytelling in Early Childhood is a captivating book which explores the multiple dimensions of storytelling and story acting and shows how they enrich language and literacy learning in the early years. Foregrounding the power of children’s own stories in the early and primary years, it provides evidence that storytelling and story acting, a pedagogic approach first developed by Vivian Gussin Paley, affords rich opportunities to foster learning within a play-based and language-rich curriculum. The book explores a number of themes and topics, including: the role of imaginary play and its dynamic relationship to narrative; how socially situated symbolic actions enrich the emotional, cognitive and social development of children; how the interrelated practices of storytelling and dramatisation enhance language and literacy learning, and contribute to an inclusive classroom culture; the challenges practitioners face in aligning their understanding of child literacy and learning with a narrow, mandated curriculum which focuses on measurable outcomes. Driven by an international approach and based on new empirical studies, this volume further advances the field, offering new theoretical and practical analyses of storytelling and story acting from complementary disciplinary perspectives. This book is a potent and engaging read for anyone intrigued by Paley’s storytelling and story acting curriculum, as well as those practitioners and students with a vested interest in early years literacy and language learning. With contributions from Vivian Gussin Paley, Patricia ‘Patsy‘ Cooper, Dorothy Faulkner, Natalia Kucirkova, Gillian Dowley McNamee and Ageliki Nicolopoulou.

Book Culture Religion and Conflict in Muslim Southeast Asia

Download or read book Culture Religion and Conflict in Muslim Southeast Asia written by Joseph A. Camilleri and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By examining the sometimes surprising and unexpected roles that culture and religion have played in mitigating or exacerbating conflicts, this book explores the cultural repertoires from which Southeast Asian political actors have drawn to negotiate the pluralism that has so long been characteristic of the region. Focusing on the dynamics of identity politics and the range of responses to the socio-political challenges of religious and ethnic pluralism, the authors assembled in this book illuminate the principal regional discourses that attempt to make sense of conflict and tensions. They examine local notions of "dialogue," "reconciliation," "civility" and "conflict resolution" and show how varying interpretations of these terms have informed the responses of different social actors across Southeast Asia to the challenges of conflict, culture and religion. The book demonstrates how stumbling blocks to dialogue and reconciliation can and have been overcome in different parts of Southeast Asia and identifies a range of actors who might be well placed to make useful contributions, propose remedies, and initiate action towards negotiating the region's pluralism. This book provides a much needed regional and comparative analysis that makes a significant contribution to a better understanding of the interfaces between region and politics in Southeast Asia.
