Book excerpt: This intimate unit history of the Badax Tigers chronicles the experiences of Company C of the 18th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry during the entire Civil War as seen through the eyes of Private Thomas Jefferson Davis. Davis' letters provide an extraordinarily complete picture of a typical Federal volunteer company in the Civil War and are supplemented by newspaper articles and some soldiers' letters written and intended for publication in local newspapers. When the Badax County Tigers left the small town of Viroqua, Wisconsin, in the autumn of 1861, they had little notion of what military service would demand of them. The Badax Tigers were as common a company in as common a regiment as may be found in the annals of the Civil War. They marched, camped and fought their way through four years of service with their fair share of battle honors and few blemishes to mar their record. They rallied at Shiloh, stood firm at Corinth, laid siege to Vicksburg, rescued Chattanooga, and saved Allatoona. In short, they represented the backbone of the Federal volunteer army from 1861 to 1865. When the original Tigers returned to Viroqua at the close of the war, they numbered only fourteen men out of the more than 100 recruits who had been mustered into service.

Book excerpt: A man. A tiger. A tornado. Jared Montaine owns a big cat rescue in Florida and faces financial pressures, getting over his ex-wife, and the challenge of suburbia creeping ever closer to his enclave for the animals. But when a tornado wrecks part of the refuge, Jared's worst fear comes to life: his Siberian tiger, Sultan, escapes. It's a big cat handler’s nightmare: a tiger on the loose, confused, lost -- and hungry. Jared races against the police, the media, and the hysterical public, all of whom are clamoring for the tiger's hide. He must re-capture Sultan before the cat is killed -- by traffic, by SWAT, or by a civilian who just wants to shoot a tiger. With fellow wildlife handlers at his side, Jared fights desperately to find and capture Sultan before the tiger injures or kills a human. Because that would lead to his worst nightmare -- having to kill the tiger he hand-raised from a cub. Jared’s commitment is tested -- to his animals, his refuge, and his belief that saving the life of even one tiger is worth losing everything.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of The Soul of an Octopus and bestselling memoir The Good Good Pig, a book that earned Sy Montgomery her status as one of the most celebrated wildlife writers of our time, Spell of the Tiger brings readers to the Sundarbans, a vast tangle of mangrove swamp and tidal delta that lies between India and Bangladesh. It is the only spot on earth where tigers routinely eat people—swimming silently behind small boats at night to drag away fishermen, snatching honey collectors and woodcutters from the forest. But, unlike in other parts of Asia where tigers are rapidly being hunted to extinction, tigers in the Sundarbans are revered. With the skill of a naturalist and the spirit of a mystic, Montgomery reveals the delicate balance of Sundarbans life, explores the mix of worship and fear that offers tigers unique protection there, and unlocks some surprising answers about why people at risk of becoming prey might consider their predator a god.

Black has incorporated his page-turning crime style into a literary story that has much to tell us about alienation, persecution, loss, and the bonds of family. Set in the stark, sweeping landscape of Tasmania, this is a literary thriller from one of the UK's finest authors. "An authentic yet unique voice, Tony Black shows why he is leading the pack...Atmospherically driven, the taut and sparse prose. Powerful." - NEW YORK JOURNAL OF BOOKS "A beautiful powerful tale to move the hardest heart." - THE SUN

Book Eighteen tides and a tiger

Download or read book Eighteen tides and a tiger written by Anjana Basu and published by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). This book was released on 2017-04-12 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sunderbans, a tangle of forests where, according to legend, ghost tiger roar at the dead of night making the mangroves shiver. However, the tiger Rohan finds is real and needs to be rescued. Rohan, on his first internship, is lost in the middle of this haunted land very unlike the hilly Corbett country he is familiar with. And he needs to be rescued too. Help comes in the shape of a girl who never seems to turn a hair at tigers or marshes! And as always, there is a mystic presence close at hand. Rohan heard a murmur of, “Mama!” and one or two of the sailors started rocking back and forth themselves in a kind of prayer. He looked wordlessly at the sailor next to him, whose fingers were tight around his clay pot of tea. “Bagh,” the sailor whispered. “Tiger!” The top deck continued to rock in a steady kind of motion as if something might be pacing up and down on it. There was another tiger. It appeared like a streak of fire out of the scrub trees springing past Rohan’s shoulder, so close that he felt the heat of the big body and its scent filled his nostrils. It had missed him because he had been bending... Uniting pace, a symbol of courage and along with that a character from a fairy tale to link old and new, So that a bridge is formed between the heroic, romantic traditions of the past and today’s modern world. Rituparno Ghosh, film maker
