Book excerpt: Shin-hanga, literally meaning ‘new prints’, was the name given to a Japanese print artists’ movement in the early years of the twentieth century. It sought to revive the traditional style of Ukiyo-e woodblock prints of the Edo period (1603-1868). The connection between shin-hanga and the Toledo Museum of Art began when Yoshida Hiroshi, one of the leaders of the movement, and his artist wife met J. Arthur MacLean and Dorothy Blair, at that time connected to the John Herron Art Museum in Indianapolis. When Mr. MacLean and Miss Blair established Toledo’s Asian Art Department in 1927-28, they decided to collaborate with their friends the Yoshidas on two exhibitions of modern Japanese prints, which took place in 1930 and 1936. This book accompanies the Museum’s exhibition, Strong Women, Beautiful Men, which explores the concept of the human form in Japanese woodblock prints. Many of the works in the extensive Toledo collection deal with the genre of popular figures, such as Kabuki actors in famous roles and bijin-ga, images of beautiful women.

Book Strong Women of Biblical Times

Download or read book Strong Women of Biblical Times written by Kathryn Charles and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-12-16 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When recording the stories of daring human exploits, the authors of the Bible seemed to have concentrated on the heroic men of ancient times, such as Moses, Joshua, Samuel, David, Jesus, Peter, Paul, and John, to name just a few. The stories of those courageous men are thrilling to hear and to read about; however, this narrative will consider the strong, brave, and valiant women in the Bible whose lives were not as embellished as their famous counterparts, but still were influential in shaping the history of biblical times. According to Dr. Lockyer in All the Women of the Bible, there are approximately two hundred named women in the Bible and an equal number of unnamed women. Out of the sixty-six books contained in the Holy Bible, there are only two of them named for women—Ruth and Esther; nevertheless, women can be seen throughout the Old and the New Testaments being used by God in mighty ways. Despite the patriarchal society of biblical days, there were strong women who played significant roles in leadership, courage, humility, and compassion in ancient times. The purpose of this writing is to highlight a few of these women and to give the reader insight into the character of each individual. It will also tell of the motivation for the strength of each one and the consequences of her actions.

Book The Suffrage Photography of Lena Connell

Download or read book The Suffrage Photography of Lena Connell written by Colleen Denney and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-10-20 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lena Connell was one of a new breed of young professional women who took up photography at the turn of the 20th century. She ran her own studio in North London, only employed women, and made her mark on history by creating compellingly modern portraits of women in the British suffrage movement. The women that Connell captured on film are as class-inclusive a group as you could find: whether they were factory workers, schoolteachers, or aristocrats, they joined the cause to make a difference for future generations of women, if not for themselves. Connell's portraits created a new kind of visibility for these activists as hard-working, unrelenting women, whose spirits rose above injustice. This book examines Connell's artistic career within the Edwardian suffrage movement. It discusses her body of portraits within the British suffrage movement's propagandistic efforts and its goals of sophisticated, professional representations of its members. It includes all of her known portraits of suffragettes through 1914.
