What are the first questions that go through your mind? Will you receive the same quality of care? Will it cost the same amount of money? The Physician Assistant (PA) profession has emerged due to the lack of physicians, especially in rural areas. PA’s are licensed health professionals who perform their duties under the supervision of a doctor Most have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree and have also attended a two-year physician assistant training program. PA’s can provide approximately 80% of a family doctor’s services. The role of the PA is an evolving one, and the profession is now recognized as being valuable in the delivery of health services. PA’s can also enhance the medical field by providing services available to the public, often-times in areas where there is a shortage of physicians (Elder). The findings presented here were obtained from a review of literature on the roles of Physician Assistants. The results of this review are compared to my observations of PA’s, to an interview with a PA, and a Physician. My observations of the roles, responsibilities, and duties of PA’s were also compared to those described in the literature review. Finally, this paper presents views of the projected future of Physician Assistants.
