Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not since the 1965 pUblication of Skin Bacteria lind Their Role in Infection has our knowledge of clinical skin microbiology been reviewed and sum marized. In the more than a decade and a half since that publication, we have seen a careful reevaluation of the ideas and information current in 1965 and the development of important new discoveries and information. This volume, Skin Microbiology: Relevance to Clinical Infection, reviews developments in the field since 1965 and summarizes the current state ofthe art in thirty-six carefully prepared chapters. Emphasis is on the clinical per spective rather than straight microbiology, although we include enough of the latter to put the clinical aspects in a proper scientific context. The authors contributing to this volume represent a cross section of authorities in the many specialty areas that contribute to our knowledge of skin microbiology. They include investigators in microbiology, infectious disease, epidemiology, surgery, pediatrics, and dermatology. Significant ef forts have been made to minimize repetition and overlap in the various chapters. In some cases, however, information is deliberately repeated in order to provide for the reader a necessary frame of reference. We hope that this volume will be of value to dermatologists, microbio logists, pediatricians, surgeons, public health workers, nurses, and others in volved in the diagnosis and treatment of dermatologic problems caused by bacteria. The editors acknowledge with appreciation the assistance of Drs. A. Allen, F. Marzulli, F. Engley, G. Hildick-Smith, A. Kligman, M. Bruch, H. Eiermann, and D. Taplin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authoritative, extensively illustrated clinician's textbook, The Biology of the Skin is written expressly for practitioners and residents in dermatology, plastic surgery, and otolaryngology. Essentially an expansion of the editors' and contributing authors' popular "Structure and Function" course given annually at the meetings of the American Academy of Dermatology, the book teaches skin biology in the context of practical clinical settings. This book covers the basic biology of the skin, how the skin functions, effects of the environment, the molecules that direct cutaneous function, genetic influences, and methods in cutaneous research. The Biology of the Skin provides a selective review of all biologic processes involving the skin and will foster an appreciation of how the skin works based on our knowledge of the basic science of skin structure and function in the 21st century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have endeavoured in this book to bring the reader up-to-date information, which will contribute to an enhanced ability to diagnose and treat mycobacterial skin diseases. This volume is mainly concerned with conveying to dermatologists, microbiologists, immunologists, dermatologists in training, registrars in other specialties and interested family practitioners, a concise appraisal of some recent developments in the various aspects of myco bacterial skin diseases. The chapters dealing with bacteriology, pathology and immunology have been planned to appear at the beginning of the book to provide the necessary conceptual framework for the section on clinical science, which deals with the variety of clinical states. The value of the clinical descriptions is vastly enhanced by a careful reading of the earlier chapters. The contributing authors have been most cooperative in making this, the tenth volume in the New Clinical Applications in Dermatology series, an excellent treatise. I thank each of them for their superb contributions. If this book stimulates and encourages a greater interest in, and a better understanding of, mycobacterial skin diseases, and enables physicians to serve more effectively those who suffer, the time and effort spent to produce it will be amply rewarded. PROFESSOR MARWALI HARAHAP IX SERIES EDITOR'S FOREWORD It was with great pleasure that I heard of Professor Harahap's wish to produce a volume on mycobacterial skin diseases.

Book Overcoming Antimicrobial Resistance of the Skin

Download or read book Overcoming Antimicrobial Resistance of the Skin written by Stephen K. Tyring and published by Springer. This book was released on 2021-05-07 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a thorough, practical review of the challenges facing clinicians treating skin microbes and how to combat these therapeutic dilemmas. It expresses the critical public health concern of antimicrobial resistance and shows how microorganisms are developing the ability to halt the progress of antimicrobials like antibiotics, antivirals, and antifungals. Chapters are grouped together in five sections for ease of use. The first three sections of the book convey foundational information on the mechanisms of antibiotics, antivirals, and antifungals resistance, as well as the implications of lack of vaccination. The fourth section then turns to the specifics of drug resistance for protozoan and helminth infections focusing primarily on initial and subsequent resistance to treatment. The book closes with a discussion on the potential solutions of innovative therapy including new delivery mechanisms, broad-spectrum antibiotics, phytocompounds, and biofilms. Chapters feature magnified, microscopic photos for identifying structures as they appear on the skin. Part of the Updates in Clinical Dermatology series, Overcoming Antimicrobial Resistance of the Skin is an important resource relevant during the COVID-19 pandemic, and is written for all medical healthcare professionals.

Book The Skin Microflora and Microbial Skin Disease

Download or read book The Skin Microflora and Microbial Skin Disease written by W. C. Noble and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-11-11 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book which surveys the world of the skin and its microflora, in health and disease, and in animals as well as man. The approach is essentially an ecological one, moving from the physical and chemical properties of the skin as a microbial habitat, through a consideration of the various major groups of microorganisms associated with it, to an account of the complex associations between these microorganisms. The skin flora in health is introduced as a prelude to the understanding of microbial skin disease, and the mechanisms of pathogenicity are explained as the major groups of infective skin conditions are reviewed. The principles of treatment, disinfection and prevention receive proper attention, as does the important topic of hospital-acquired infection, where the skin is so often implicated. The text is accompanied by numerous tables containing a wealth of practical and experimental detail, and is extensively referenced. This is a book which will be essential to dermatologists, medical microbiologists, veterinarians and research workers in these fields.
