Book Augmentation of Manganese Bioleaching from Its Ore by Genetically Engineered Bacterial Strains

Download or read book Augmentation of Manganese Bioleaching from Its Ore by Genetically Engineered Bacterial Strains written by S. D. Badrinath and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microbial leaching process is considered as an economical and technically viable clear technology for processing low grade manganese ores. Genetically engineered strains of Bacillus sp. produced better resilts (upto 80% enhancement) in 45 days. When compared with the control, metabolites extracted from Pseudomonas sp. gave 40% enhanced bioleaching and Bacillus sp. gave 60% enhancement in 30 days. A simple software package for easy manipulation of metabolic pathways is also being developed. [AUthors' abstract].

Book Adaptive Soil Management From Theory to Practices

Download or read book Adaptive Soil Management From Theory to Practices written by Amitava Rakshit and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-15 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book focuses in detail on learning and adapting through partnerships between managers, scientists, and other stakeholders who learn together how to create and maintain sustainable resource systems. As natural areas shrink and fragment, our ability to sustain economic growth and safeguard biological diversity and ecological integrity is increasingly being put to the test. In attempting to meet this unprecedented challenge, adaptive management is becoming a viable alternative for broader application. Adaptive management is an iterative decision-making process which is both operationally and conceptually simple and which incorporates users to acknowledge and account for uncertainty, and sustain an operating environment that promotes its reduction through careful planning, evaluation, and learning until the desired results are achieved. This multifaceted approach requires clearly defined management objectives to guide decisions about what actions to take, and explicit assumptions about expected outcomes to compare against actual outcomes. In this edited book, we address the issue by pursuing a holistic and systematic approach that utilizes natural resources to reap sustainable environmental, economic and social benefits for adaptive management, helping to ensure that relationships between land, water and plants are managed in ways that mimic nature.

Book Environmental Microbial Biotechnology

Download or read book Environmental Microbial Biotechnology written by Lala Behari Sukla and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a timely review of strategies for coping with polluted ecosystems by employing bacteria, fungi and algae. It presents the vast variety of microbial technologies currently applied in the bioremediation of a variety of anthropogenic toxic chemicals, mining and industrial wastes and other pollutants. Topics covered include: microbe-mineral interactions, biosensors in environmental monitoring, iron-mineral transformation, microbial biosurfactants, bioconversion of cotton gin waste to bioethanol, anaerobe bioleaching and sulfide oxidation. Further chapters discuss the effects of pollution on microbial diversity, as well as the role of microbes in the bioremediation of abandoned mining areas, industrial and horticultural wastes, wastewater and sites polluted with hydrocarbons, heavy metals, manganese and uranium.

Book The Extractive Metallurgy of Gold

Download or read book The Extractive Metallurgy of Gold written by John C. Yannopoulos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of gold begins in antiquity. Bits of gold were found in Spanish caves that were used by Paleolithic people around 40,000 B.C. Gold is the "child of Zeus," wrote the Greek poet Pindar. The Romans called the yellow metal aurum ("shining dawn"). Gold is the first element and first metal mentioned in the Bible, where it appears in more than 400 references. This book provides the most thorough and up-to-date information available on the extraction of gold from its ores, starting with the miner alogy of gold ores and ending with details of refining. Each chapter con cludes with a list of references including full publication information for all works cited. Sources preceded by an asterisk (*) are especially recom mended for more in-depth study. Nine appendices, helpful to both students and operators, complement the text. I have made every attempt to keep abreast of recent technical literature on the extraction of gold. Original publications through the spring of 1989 have been reviewed and cited where appropriate. This book is intended as a reference for operators, managers, and designers of gold mills and for professional prospectors. It is also designed as a textbook for extractive metallurgy courses. I am indebted to the Library of Engineering Societies in New York, which was the main source of the references in the book. The assistance of my son, Panos, in typing the manuscript is gratefully acknowledged.
