A small portion of fiis dis uisition also is inserted by Shaw in the medley which e gives us as the Introduction to th Sylvarum. It is given in full in R. G.'s translation. Of the History of the Winds, &c.' Book Selected Philosophical Works

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most comprehensive collection available of Bacon's philosophical and scientific writings, this volume offers Bacon's major works in their entirety, or in generous selections, revised from the classic 19th century editions of Spedding, Ellis and Heath. Selections from Bacon's natural histories round out this edition by showing the types of compilations that he believed would most contribute to the third part of his Great Instauration. In her General Introduction, Rose-Mary Sargent sketches Bacon's early life, education, and legal career, and discusses the major components of his philosophical works, and traces his influence on subsequent natural philosophy.

Download or read book The Works of Francis Bacon Classic Reprint written by Basil Montagu and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Francis Bacon About thirty years ago, I read in Lord Bacon's will - "For my burial, I desire it may be in St. Michael's Church, St. Albans: there was my mother buried, and it is the parish church of my mansion-house of Gorhambury, and it is the only Christian church within the walls of Old Verulam. For my name and memory, I leave it to men's charitable speeches, and to foreign nations and the next ages." This passage, not to be read till he was at rest from his labours, impressed me with a feeling of his consciousness of ill usage, and a conviction that the time would arrive when justice would be done to his memory. The words were cautiously selected, with the knowledge, which he, above all men, possessed of the power of expression, and of its certain influence, sooner or later, upon society. Book Francis Bacon Vol 1

Download or read book Francis Bacon Vol 1 written by John Nichol and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-08 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Francis Bacon, Vol. 1: His Life and Philosophy The materials for the whole of Bacon's period are to be found in the work of that most brilliant author, Mr Froude, and in the pages of the fairest of living historians, Professor S. R. Gardiner. My obligations to the latter are even greater than may be inferred from my numerous acknowledgments. His Life of Bacon in the 'Dictionary of National Biography, ' confirming in almost every point my previous view, would have left me little to add had it not been obviously cramped in space. The scattered comments in his 'History' only require to be brought together to convey the most adequate representation yet offered to us of the great man's career. With this exception, Bacon's biography has been hitherto written by rival partisans. The duel between Mr Montague and Lord Macaulay has been renewed between Mr Spedding, inveterately bent on believing the best, and Dr Abbott, equally determined to believe the worst of the subject of their opposite portraitures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophical Works of Francis Bacon, Vol. 4 of 5: With Prefaces and Notes With regard to the translations which occupy the first half of this volume (as far as p. 27 I have nothing to add to what I have said (vol. I. P. Xiv.) in my general account of the edition. With regard to the rest, I then intended merely to submit my suggestions to the translator, leaving it to him to make such alterations as he thought desirable; and about half of the fifth volume (which it was found convenient to print before the fourth) had been carried through on that plan, when an engagement on the Continent made it impossible for him to superintend the printing further: upon which he left his manuscript with me, to be dealt with as I thought fit. The consequence is that for the ultimate state of the whole of this volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Francis Bacon IN preparing this sketch it is needless to say how deeply I em indebted to Mr. Spedding and Mr. Ellis, the last editors of Bacon's writings, the very able and painstaking commentators, the one on Bacon's life, the other on his philosophy. It is impossible to overstate the affectionate care and high intelligence and honesty with which Mr. Spedding has brought together and arranged the materials for an estimate of Bacon's character. In the result, in spite of the force and ingenuity of much of his pleading, I find myself most reluctantly obliged to difier from him; it seems to me to be a case where the French saying, cited by Bacon, in one of his commonplace books, holds good - Par trap se debattre, la verite se perd.l But this does not diminish the debt of gratitude which all who are interested about Bacon must owe to Mr. Spedding. I wish also to acknowledge the assistance which I have received from Mr. Gardiner's. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Francis Bacon of Verulam

Download or read book Francis Bacon of Verulam written by Kuno Fischer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Francis Bacon of Verulam: Realistic Philosophy and Its Age MY chief object in translating Dr. Fischer's excellent work on Bacon and the realistic phi los0phy, was to lay before English readers a brief but complete digest of two books, which, all important as they are in the history of science, are most assuredly commended much oftener than they are read. Whatever veneration may be paid in England to the treatise De Augmentis Sci entiarum and to the Novum Organum, few indeed are the students who would elaborate for themselves so perfect a summary of the doctrines contained in those celebrated productions as is presented by Dr. Fischer within the space of a few brief chapters. Whether his estimate of the English philosopher merits approval or not. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
