Book Francis Bacon

Download or read book Francis Bacon written by Mark Stevens and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2021-03-23 with total page 896 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE TIMES ART BOOK OF THE YEAR Named one of The Irish Times' Books of the Year for 2021 A compelling and comprehensive look at the life and art of Francis Bacon, one of the iconic painters of the twentieth century—from the Pulitzer Prize-winning authors of de Kooning: An American Master. This intimate study of the singularly private, darkly funny, eruptive man and his extraordinary art “is bejeweled with sensuous detail … the iconoclastic charm of the artist keeps the pages turning” (The Washington Post). “A definitive life of Francis Bacon ... Stevens and Swan are vivid scene setters ... Francis Bacon does justice to the contradictions of both the man and the art.” —The Boston Globe Francis Bacon created an indelible image of mankind in modern times, and played an outsized role in both twentieth century art and life—from his public emergence with his legendary Triptych 1944 (its images "so unrelievedly awful" that people fled the gallery), to his death in Madrid in 1992. Bacon was a witty free spirit and unabashed homosexual at a time when many others remained closeted, and his exploits were as unforgettable as his images. He moved among the worlds of London's Soho and East End, the literary salons of London and Paris, and the homosexual life of Tangier. Through hundreds of interviews, and extensive new research, the authors probe Bacon's childhood in Ireland (he earned his father's lasting disdain because his asthma prevented him from hunting); his increasingly open homosexuality; his early design career—never before explored in detail; the formation of his vision; his early failure as an artist; his uneasy relationship with American abstract art; and his improbable late emergence onto the international stage as one of the great visionaries of the twentieth century. In all, Francis Bacon: Revelations gives us a more complete and nuanced--and more international--portrait than ever before of this singularly private, darkly funny, eruptive man and his equally eruptive, extraordinary art. Bacon was not just an influential artist, he helped remake the twentieth-century figure.

Book The Painted Closet of Lady Anne Bacon Drury

Download or read book The Painted Closet of Lady Anne Bacon Drury written by H.L. Meakin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lady Anne Bacon Drury (1572-1624) was the granddaughter and niece of two of England's Lord Keepers of the Great Seal, Sir Nicholas Bacon and Sir Francis Bacon. Lady Anne was also the friend and patroness of John Donne and Joseph Hall; however, she deserves to be remembered in her own right. Within her massive country house, Lady Anne created a tiny painted room that she seems to have used as a kind of three-dimensional book. The walls consisted of panels of pictures and mottoes, grouped under Latin sentences. These panels can still be viewed in a Suffolk museum: Christchurch Mansion in Ipswich. Some panels point to classical and Biblical sources, and to popular emblem books. The sources of other panels are more recondite, while still others are original compositions by Lady Anne. The panels exhibit a contemptus mundi theme and reflect a struggle with ambition, pride, and even despair. Some panels also appear to register carefully veiled but pointed critiques of political and religious events and figures. Lady Anne's painted closet or 'architext' is thus relevant to a wide range of early modern scholarship in various disciplines but is as yet largely unappreciated. For the first time in four hundred years, this book fully describes the closet and places it in its personal, social, intellectual, and aesthetic contexts. It argues for the painted closet's importance for understanding early modern conceptualizations of private and public spaces, and for illuminating fundamental early modern habits of seeing and reading (especially combinations of text and image). Finally, this book explores the closet as an example of the ingenious ways in which female subjectivity found ways to express itself even within the constraints of early modern patriarchal society in England.

Book Shakespeare Bacon Conundrum

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since this book is being published posthumous, please allow me to share what I remember about my dad, the author. Russell Storrs Hall was the third son born to Olive Agar Hall and Bertine Anderson Hall on February 4th,1917 on the south side of Chicago, Illinois. I believe he was a very serious, sensitive, studious young man growing up, who was constantly reading and searching for answers. He possessed a high intellect and a profound curiosity. He attended college in Chicago, but soon after the Pearl Harbor attack, enlisted in the Army. At some point in time, his Company was sent to serve in Panama, Central America, where he became ill from the effects of the jungle. He received a medical discharge in 1943 and returned home to convalesce. On August 5th, 1945 he married my mother, Hildegard H. Bergt. When I was young, my father worked as an insurance underwriter for George F. Brown Insurance and LLoyds of London. In 1960, after sitting for a civil service exam, he changed careers and became a Postal Carrier. My parents divorced in 1968, and dad later remarried in 1971 to Lorraine R. Lawler. In 1982 he retired from the downtown Chicago Post Offifi ce as supervisor. My father’s lifetime passion and hobby was researching for this manuscript, and he dedicated his retirement years to writing this book. His wife Lorraine was his source of encouragement. He fifi nally completed his book only a few months before his death, February 10th, 1998. I am very proud to be his daughter, yours truly, Janice Gold-Orland.

Book KNOW ABOUT FRANCIS BACON

Download or read book KNOW ABOUT FRANCIS BACON written by Saurabh Singh Chauhan and published by Saurabh Singh Chauhan. This book was released on 2022-03-05 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francis Bacon (1561-1626) was an English philosopher, statesman, scientist, jurist, and author. He is considered to be one of the most influential figures in the Scientific Revolution. Bacon's work helped to lay the foundation for modern science by promoting the use of inductive reasoning and experimental observation. Bacon was born into a prominent family in London. His father, Sir Nicholas Bacon, was the Lord Keeper of the Great Seal under Queen Elizabeth I. Bacon's mother, Anne Cooke Bacon, was a learned woman who taught him Latin and Greek at a young age. Bacon received a classical education at Trinity College, Cambridge. After graduating from Cambridge, he studied law at Gray's Inn. Bacon was admitted to the bar in 1582 and quickly rose through the ranks of the legal profession. In 1584, Bacon was elected to Parliament. He served in Parliament for over 20 years and was a vocal advocate for reform. Bacon also served in a number of government positions, including Solicitor General, Attorney General, and Lord Chancellor. Bacon's most important contributions were in the fields of philosophy and science. In his book Novum Organum, Bacon argued for a new method of scientific inquiry based on observation and experimentation. Bacon's method was in contrast to the traditional method of Aristotelian logic, which relied on deduction. Bacon's work had a profound influence on the development of modern science. His ideas were embraced by many of the leading scientists of the Scientific Revolution, including Galileo Galilei, Isaac Newton, and René Descartes. Bacon was also a prolific writer. He wrote on a wide range of topics, including philosophy, science, law, politics, and literature. Bacon's most famous work is his collection of essays, Essays or Counsels, Civil and Moral. His essays are known for their wisdom and wit. Bacon was a complex and controversial figure. He was a brilliant scholar and a shrewd politician. However, he was also ambitious and materialistic. In 1621, Bacon was impeached by Parliament for accepting bribes. He was convicted and removed from office. Despite his downfall, Bacon's legacy is immense. He is considered to be one of the most important figures in the history of Western thought. His work helped to shape the modern world in profound ways. In the following chapters, we will explore Bacon's life and work in more detail. We will examine his contributions to philosophy, science, law, literature, and politics. We will also discuss his legacy and the impact of his work on the modern world.
