Book excerpt: The definitive career guide for grad students, adjuncts, post-docs and anyone else eager to get tenure or turn their Ph.D. into their ideal job Each year tens of thousands of students will, after years of hard work and enormous amounts of money, earn their Ph.D. And each year only a small percentage of them will land a job that justifies and rewards their investment. For every comfortably tenured professor or well-paid former academic, there are countless underpaid and overworked adjuncts, and many more who simply give up in frustration. Those who do make it share an important asset that separates them from the pack: they have a plan. They understand exactly what they need to do to set themselves up for success. They know what really moves the needle in academic job searches, how to avoid the all-too-common mistakes that sink so many of their peers, and how to decide when to point their Ph.D. toward other, non-academic options. Karen Kelsky has made it her mission to help readers join the select few who get the most out of their Ph.D. As a former tenured professor and department head who oversaw numerous academic job searches, she knows from experience exactly what gets an academic applicant a job. And as the creator of the popular and widely respected advice site The Professor is In, she has helped countless Ph.D.’s turn themselves into stronger applicants and land their dream careers. Now, for the first time ever, Karen has poured all her best advice into a single handy guide that addresses the most important issues facing any Ph.D., including: -When, where, and what to publish -Writing a foolproof grant application -Cultivating references and crafting the perfect CV -Acing the job talk and campus interview -Avoiding the adjunct trap -Making the leap to nonacademic work, when the time is right The Professor Is In addresses all of these issues, and many more.

Book Fall from Grace

Download or read book Fall from Grace written by Nathan Daniels and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-09-04 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fall from Grace started as a book about drug abuse and gradually formed into a story about a lost, adopted child who responded to the world with destruction. For some reason, and as far back as I can remember, Ive always felt hard done by or resentful. Maybe its because of the adoption, but even as a young child, I was angry and destructive. I broke everything I got, and to be honest, I behaved like a delinquent. This behavior continued and progressed until that fateful day when I first tried drugs. Drugs and alcohol became the solution to an unnamed problem, and eventually developed into a life-threatening obsession that very nearly put me six feet under. Fall from Grace is mostly factual, some of the instances are from distorted memories and in that respect, the story is as true as my memories are, and maybe that isnt the most reliable source, but hey, its done and its my experience of what I went through. So enjoy.

Book excerpt: Why do we pursue more when we’d be happier with less? In this updated edition of 7, New York Times bestselling author Jen Hatmaker tells the story of how she and her family tried to combat overindulgence—and what they learned along the way about living a truly meaningful life. Simple and Free is the true story of how Jen Hatmaker (along with her family) identified seven areas of excess—food, clothes, spending, media, possessions, waste, and stress—and made seven simple choices to fight back against the modern-day diseases of greed, materialism, and overindulgence. So, what’s the payoff from living a deeply reduced life? It’s the discovery of a greatly increased connection with God—a call toward simplicity and generosity that transcends social experiment to become a radically better life. In this new edition, written not just for readers of faith but for everyone who craves a gentler, simpler life, Hatmaker shares how sustainability and generosity still impact and challenge her today. Annotated throughout with new reflections from the author, this book offers thoughtful insights on the vastly different world of Simple and Free from back when it was first published as 7, and considers the dramatically different space Hatmaker occupies now. Simple and Free is funny, raw, and not a guilt trip in the making. Come along and discover what Jesus’ version of rich, blessed, and generous might look like in your life.

Trying to regain fading youth, he plans a trekking vacation with his daughter, Mercy, across the White Mountains of Peru. Book excerpt: "Revelatory, terrifying, but, ultimately, hopeful." -Elizabeth Kolbert, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of THE SIXTH EXTINCTION From the author of Junkyard Planet, a journey into the surprising afterlives of our former possessions. Downsizing. Decluttering. Discarding. Sooner or later, all of us are faced with things we no longer need or want. But when we drop our old clothes and other items off at a local donation center, where do they go? Sometimes across the country-or even halfway across the world-to people and places who find value in what we leave behind. In Secondhand, journalist Adam Minter takes us on an unexpected adventure into the often-hidden, multibillion-dollar industry of reuse: thrift stores in the American Southwest to vintage shops in Tokyo, flea markets in Southeast Asia to used-goods enterprises in Ghana, and more. Along the way, Minter meets the fascinating people who handle-and profit from-our rising tide of discarded stuff, and asks a pressing question: In a world that craves shiny and new, is there room for it all? Secondhand offers hopeful answers and hard truths. A history of the stuff we've used and a contemplation of why we keep buying more, it also reveals the marketing practices, design failures, and racial prejudices that push used items into landfills instead of new homes. Secondhand shows us that it doesn't have to be this way, and what really needs to change to build a sustainable future free of excess stuff.

Book excerpt: Telemachos – son of Odysseus in the classical epic The Odyssey by Homer – grew up in Ithaca in ancient Greece with his mother Penelope. Meanwhile, for twenty years, his father fought at Troy and struggled through his famous adventures. Once home, Telemachos helped his father kill the invasive suitors who pillaged the family estate and sought to force the faithful Penelope into an unwanted marriage. In the modern story, the protagonist wandered through the second half of the 20th century on a spiritual journey to search for his soul. Michael Barrent encountered his own version of the Cyclops, Lotus Eaters, Circe, Scylla and Charybdis. He survived childhood, religious indoctrination, education, the Vietnam war, drugs, spiritual gurus and communities, and various unstable sexual relationships. Finally, he exiled the demon-entity belief-system (suitors) which controlled his memory, personality, and essence. Eventually, he found his soul mate and personal calling. The book was also inspired by the fictional journey taken by Leopold Bloom through Dublin, Ireland, on June 16th, 1904. Described in Ulysses by James Joyce, Bloom met equivalent Homeric characters, accepted the affair of his estranged wife Molly, and eventually befriended Stephen Dedaelus as a substitute son.

In a world that feels increasingly disconnected, it’s time to reclaim a life of rich, authentic connection—because we are all made better when we trust one another and work together. In his most vulnerable book to date, Chip Gaines opens up about his lifelong pursuit of building relationships with people from all walks of life. Chip emphasizes the importance of seeing people for who they are and not for what they can do for you, enabling you to build a strong community and a life of meaning, joy, and connection. How does it happen? By being intentional about choosing the company you keep. Chip explains the value of seeking out people who are electrified by living according to their purpose, who will stand beside you as you tackle new challenges, and who bet on each other instead of the status quo. The key is being true to yourself, figuring out what you want to do with your life, and finding people who will lift you up along the way. No Pain, No Gaines will open your eyes to valuable lessons, including how to: Find the risks worth taking Value what you bring to the table Resist the status quo Look outside yourself and your circle and foster connections with others Get comfortable with being uncomfortably kind Live life fully awake, not asleep at the wheel A good life doesn't always come easy, but that's because the good stuff never does. It requires faith in people. It requires faith in yourself. It requires hope. And it requires a willingness to grow even when it hurts. In No Pain, No Gaines, through hard-won lessons and personal stories all told with his trademark blend of wit and wisdom, Chip Gaines will coach you on how to make your life rich and your relationships run deep.
