Book Superior Performing Asphalt Pavements Superpave

Download or read book Superior Performing Asphalt Pavements Superpave written by Thomas William Kennedy and published by National Research Council. This book was released on 1994 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) was a highly focused, ambitious research effort that targeted four specific areas for intense study over the time frame from 1987 to 1993. Asphalt was one of the four study areas. This report describes the Superpave system, the final product of the asphalt research program; and the various parts that comprise its operational characteristics. In all, the final report of the SHRP Asphalt Research Program consists of five parts, the contents of which are briefly described in this report. Reference is made within this report to specific details within the other four parts for readers who want a more detailed description of the methodology, test methods, and theory behind Superpave.

Book The SHRP Direct Tension Specification Test Its Development and Use

Download or read book The SHRP Direct Tension Specification Test Its Development and Use written by DA. Anderson and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes the development and use of a direct tension test for measuring the strength and failure strain of asphalt binders. This test, which is used to determine the strain at failure (strain tolerance) of asphalt binders, was selected by the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) as a specification test for asphalt binders. Test methods available prior to the development of this test were found inadequate for accurately measuring the strain tolerance of asphalt binders. Therefore, these methods were judged unsuitable for specification purposes. The dog bone geometry used in the direct tension test method described in this paper is widely used for other materials. Each specimen requires slightly more than three grams of asphalt binder. The specimen is gripped using plastic inserts cast as an integral part of the test specimen. The specimen is loaded through holes in the inserts using specially designed pins that automatically align the test specimen. Specimen elongation is measured using a noncontact laser-based extensometer which provides accurate and repeatable measurements. The method is easy to use and is designed to provide the strain-at-failure-data needed for specification purposes.

Book SHRP PG Classification and Evaluation of In Service Asphalts After Eight Years

Download or read book SHRP PG Classification and Evaluation of In Service Asphalts After Eight Years written by KA. Galal and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study has been conducted on the changes to in-service asphalts. This study represents ongoing extensive research efforts at Purdue University to investigate the changes to in-service asphalts and to evaluate the recently developed SUPERPAVE asphalt binder specifications. During the 1985 construction season, samples from the original asphalt binders and the truck mix samples (original mixtures) were retained from a number of paving projects in Indiana. In 1992/1993, after 7 to 8 years in-service, cores from these pavements were taken. During the same period of time, distress surveys were conducted. In a later stage, six projects were selected for detailed analysis using the SUPERPAVE binder test equipment and procedures. A major interest of this research was to characterize the changes in the asphalt binders in-service and to correlate these changes with the pavement distresses, mainly: permanent deformation (rutting), fatigue cracking, and low temperature cracking. Consequently, the performance grade (PG) binder specifications could be evaluated. The SUPERPAVE binder tests and associated criteria were used to determine the high, intermediate, and low temperature characteristics (stiffness, (Pa)) of the asphalt binders tested. The results compare the relation between the conditioned (aged) asphalt binders from the Rolling Thin Film Oven (RTFO) test and the asphalt binders extracted from the original mixtures and the relation between the asphalt binders conditioned in the Pressure Aging Vessel (PAV) to the asphalt binders extracted from the in-service (field) cores. The results indicate that the current SUPERPAVE RTFO conditioning does not simulate short term aging. Similarly, the results show that the PAV aging procedure does not correspond to the aging encountered after eight years in-service.

Book Development and Validation of Performance Prediction Models and Specifications for Asphalt Binders and Paving Mixes

Download or read book Development and Validation of Performance Prediction Models and Specifications for Asphalt Binders and Paving Mixes written by Robert L. Lytton and published by Strategic Highway Research Program (Shrp). This book was released on 1993 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A result of the Strategic Highway Research Program's asphalt research is the development of performance-based specifications for asphalt binders and mixtures to control 3 distress modes: rutting; fatigue cracking; and thermal cracking. The SHRP A-005 project developed detailed pavement performance models to support these binder and mixture specifications and performance-based mixture designs. This report documents the findings of this extensive research effort and provides supporting data for the performance-based specifications and mixture design procedure called SUPERPAVE. The A-005 contract developed and used a sophisticated, mechanistic-based pavement performance model to define the relationships between asphalt binder and mixture properties and pavement distress. A comprehensive pavement performance model was developed that predicts the amount of fatigue cracking, thermal cracking and rutting in asphalt concrete pavements with time, using results from the accelerated laboratory tests. The pavement performance models for each distress were also used to confirm the relevant binder and mixture properties established by other SHRP contractors. The model has 3 parts: a mixture evaluation model; a pavement response model; and a pavement distress model.

Book SHRP Asphalt Binder Specifications for Saudi Environment

Download or read book SHRP Asphalt Binder Specifications for Saudi Environment written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conventional class ification testing methods for paving asphalt are primarily empirical in nature and do not provide material properties in fundamental engineering units as required for development of performance-related specifications. Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) has developed four new pieces of equipment for conditioning and testing the binder to evaluate its suitability from pavement inservice performance point of view. Saudi asphalt from Rastanura Oil Refinery was tested for performance grading using the SHRP equipment at the University of Texas at Austin, USA. Test results show the performance grade of PG 64. High pavement temperatures prevalent in the Kingdom require the asphalt binder to be of a higher maximum temperature performance grade, such as PG 70 or PG 76, to be able to provide a greater resistance to permanent deformation.
