Book Treaties Submitted to the United States Senate

Download or read book Treaties Submitted to the United States Senate written by Christian L. Wiktor and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2006-09-30 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under U.S. domestic law and treaty practice, all international agreements concluded by the United States, regardless of their form, designation or title are divided into treaties, which are submitted to the Senate for its advice and consent to ratification, and other international agreements. Treaties which are submitted to the Senate are similar to federal laws, and their legislative history is much the same as the one followed by legislation, except that it is confined to proceedings in the Senate only. This legislative history follows the procedures established by the Senate, and it is based on primary legislative sources. The main part is arranged chronologically by the date of conclusion of the treaty. Each treaty contains the following components: it provides general information about the treaty; it lists chronologically steps taken by the Senate during the treaty approval process; legislative implementation, executive action, following Senate approval; entry into force, and annotations, such as references to related treaties, amendments, and present status. The use of the legislative history is facilitated by appendices and a detailed general index which includes: parties, regional subdivisions, and subjects.

Book excerpt: The authorities' economic policy seeks to sustain strong economic growth mainly through low taxes, large public investment, and the provision of credit to the private sector through the state-owned Development Finance Corporation (DFC). The authorities expect the resulting high rate of economic growth to generate sufficient fiscal resources to reduce the public sector deficit and service the rapidly accumulating external public debt. Executive Directors welcomed the authorities' intention to reduce excess liquidity to help secure the sustainability of the exchange rate.

Book excerpt: "The British government, while upholding the right of the settlers to live and work there, never challenged the sovereignty of Spain over the territory, and indeed recognised it in two eighteenth century treaties. But they refused to accept later Guatemalan and Mexican claims to inheritance of Spanish sovereignty. The consequences of the former dispute live on today." "This book traces the outline of this complex story in as objective a way as possible, allowing the facts recorded in files in London and Belize to speak for themselves."--Cover.
