Book The Futures

Download or read book The Futures written by Emily Lambert and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2010-12-28 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Futures, Emily Lambert, senior writer at Forbes magazine, tells us the rich and dramatic history of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and Chicago Board of Trade, which together comprised the original, most bustling futures market in the world. She details the emergence of the futures business as a kind of meeting place for gamblers and farmers and its subsequent transformation into a sophisticated electronic market where contracts are traded at lightning-fast speeds. Lambert also details the disastrous effects of Wall Street's adoption of the futures contract without the rules and close-knit social bonds that had made trading it in Chicago work so well. Ultimately Lambert argues that the futures markets are the real "free" markets and that speculators, far from being mere parasites, can serve a vital economic and social function given the right architecture. The traditional futures market, she explains, because of its written and cultural limits, can serve as a useful example for how markets ought to work and become a tonic for our current financial ills.

Book Speculation by Commodity Index Funds

Download or read book Speculation by Commodity Index Funds written by Scott H. Irwin and published by CABI. This book was released on 2023-04-25 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commodity futures prices exploded in 2007-2008 and concerns about a new type of speculative participant in commodity futures markets began to emerge. The main argument was that unprecedented buying pressure from new "commodity index" investors created massive bubbles that resulted in prices substantially exceeding fundamental value. At the time, it was not uncommon to link concerns about speculation and high prices to world hunger, food crises, and civil unrest. Naturally, this outcry resulted in numerous regulatory proposals to restrict speculation in commodity futures markets. This book presents important research on the impact of index investment on commodity futures prices that the authors conducted over the last fifteen years. The eleven articles presented in the book follow the timeline of our involvement in the world-wide debate about index funds as it evolved after 2007. We also include an introductory chapter, new author forewords for each article chapter, and a lessons learned chapter to round out the book. Policy-makers, researchers, and market participants will find the book not only functions as useful documentation of the debate; but, also as a natural starting point when high commodity prices inevitably create the next speculation backlash.

Book Do Commodity Futures Help Forecast Spot Prices

Download or read book Do Commodity Futures Help Forecast Spot Prices written by Mr.David A Reichsfeld and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We assess the spot price forecasting performance of 10 commodity futures at various horizons up to two years and test whether this performance is affected by market conditions. We reject efficient markets based on in-sample tests but, out-of-sample, we find that the forecast from the futures market is hard to beat. We find that the forecasting performance of futures does not depend on the slope of the futures curve, in contrast to the predictions of well-known models of commodity markets. We also find futures' forecasting performance to be invariant to whether prices are in an upswing or downswing, casting doubt on aspersions that uninformed investors participating during bull markets impede the price discovery process.

Book Does speculation with agricultural commodity futures cause price bubbles in the event of negative production shocks

Download or read book Does speculation with agricultural commodity futures cause price bubbles in the event of negative production shocks written by Tobias Thürer and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2016-02-05 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the mid 2000s, an increasing financialization of commodity futures markets is taking place. This has fueled an ongoing discussion about the effect of financial investments on the development of commodity prices. Against this background, the trading activities of financial speculators also come to the fore. There is the concern that such speculators can cause irrational overshootings of agricultural commodity prices, e.g. in the event of global production shocks. In such an event the decrease of total supply induces a price surge menacing food security in developing countries. Yet, the question emerges whether speculation aggravates this price increase, eventually inducing a price bubble. The relevance of this concern is reinforced by the fact that due to climate change an increased frequency and severity of global agricultural production shortfalls is at stake. If speculation evokes an additional threat to food security in the event of a production shock, the political agenda should not be confined to focus solely on the adaptation to climate change. Instead, it is then also necessary to address speculative activities on agricultural commodity markets. This book scrutinises whether speculative bubbles can be identified in the event of severe global production shocks. For this, a framework for tracing the transmission of the futures price's development on the spot market is developed. Using annual data from 1979-2012 for maize it is analysed whether production shock related price bubbles occurred.

Book Hot Commodities

Download or read book Hot Commodities written by Jim Rogers and published by Random House Trade Paperbacks. This book was released on 2007-03-27 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The next bull market is here. It’s not in stocks. It’s not in bonds. It’s in commodities –and some smart investors will be riding that bull to record returns in the next decade. Before Jim Rogers hit the road to write his bestselling books Investment Biker and Adventure Capitalist, he was one of the world’s most successful investors. He cofounded the Quantum Fund and made so much money that he never needed to work again. Yet despite his success, Rogers has never written a book of practical investment advice–until now. In Hot Commodities, Rogers offers the lowdown on the most lucrative markets for today and tomorrow. In 1998, gliding under the radar, a bull market in commodities began. Rogers thinks it’s going to continue for at least fifteen years–and he’s put his money where his mouth is: In 1998, he started his own commodities index fund. It’s up 165% since then, with more than $200 million invested, and it’s the single-best performing index fund in the world in any asset class. Less risky than stocks and less sluggish than bonds,, commodities are where the money is–and will be in the years ahead. Rogers’s strategies are simple and straightforward. You can start small–a few thousand dollars will suffice. It’s all about putting your money into stuff you understand, the basic materials of everyday life, like coal, sugar, cotton, corn, or crude oil. Once you recognize the cyclical and historical trading patterns outlined here, you’ll be on your way. In language that is both colorful and accessible, but Rogers explains why the world of commodity investing can be one of the simplest of all–and how commodities are the bases by which investors can value companies, markets, and whole economies. To be a truly great investor is to know something about commodities. For small investors and high rollers alike, Hot Commodities is as good as gold . . . or lead, or aluminum, which are some of the commodities Rogers says could be as rewarding for investors.

Book Back to the Futures

Download or read book Back to the Futures written by Richard A. Fell and published by . This book was released on 2017-05-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author, in a previous life, taught mathematics and science in high school. While studying commodity futures markets, he discovered that futures charts appear at first to show random and chaotic price movement, but on closer analysis reveal a very organized mathematical price structure. Price moves in predicable measured steps with advances and corrections rising and falling in remarkable geometric pattern. If you want to truly understand what is happening on a commodity futures chart, you need to appreciate this mathematical structure and the science underlying price moves. Simple mathematics defines the structure or roadway that price travels on the chart, with the science of momentum providing the energy for the price move. With the mathematical and scientific approach, the trading signal actually causes the price move, giving us a more reliable system for trading than classic technical analysis. If you are currently risking money in the futures markets or will be in the future, you owe it to yourself to explore this very different approach to trading.
