Book excerpt: Back to Serve is a fictional memoir about a soon-to-be-retired army captain, Nico Corretti, who after a career in the military is ready to begin his civilian life with his family. But first, he must out-process and then drive halfway across the country to get home, during which he has an improbable encounter with a Russian woman who informs him that his safety and his postservice stability may be in jeopardy. On the long drive home, he considers the plausibility of her claim and reflects on his past and future.Once home, he relishes the quality time with his family, which includes visiting his father in his hometown. But afterward, he discovers the limited employment opportunities in the slow recovery years after the Great Recession. He undergoes an extended unemployment period before anxiously and dutifully taking a government-contract position abroad, which turns out to be more perilous than he had originally been briefed. And the mysterious Russian woman he met may lead him to some of the answers he was searching for, as well as to some dangers and desires that he wasn't. Upon completion of his contract job in Europe, he enjoys a well-deserved respite at home. But it's short lived, as a swell of terrorist attacks against the United States require (or demand) more of his military service. Torn between being there for his family and his duty to his country, Captain Corretti is coldly reminded that the two actually are mutually inclusive. He's sent back to a familiar place, the Middle East, and in the process, he may be able to avenge the soldiers he had lost under his command. But he'll need to reach deeper within himself than he ever has before in order to succeed on the battlefield and in life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A new perspective on servant leadership—challenging us to bring both courage and humility to the table—for the sake of the people and the enterprise.” —John C. Maxwell, New York Times-bestselling author In this updated edition of Dare to Serve, former Popeyes CEO Cheryl Bachelder shows that leading by serving is a rigorous and tough-minded approach that yields the best results. When she was named CEO of Popeyes in 2007, the stock price had slipped from $34 in 2002 to $13. The brand was stagnant, the team was discouraged, and the franchisees were just plain angry. Nine years later, restaurant sales were up 45 percent, restaurant profits had doubled, and the stock price was over $61. Servant leadership is sometimes derided as soft or ineffective, but this book confirms that challenging people to reach a daring destination, while treating them with dignity, creates the conditions for superior performance. The second edition of this bestselling book includes Bachelder’s post-Popeyes observations and new examples of how you can switch your leadership from self to serve. Ever engaging and inspirational, Bachelder takes you firsthand through the transformation of Popeyes and shows how anyone, at any level can become a Dare-to-Serve leader. “Extraordinary! Dare to Serve describes the kind of leadership so desperately needed in the 21st century. A powerful blend of courage and humility, Cheryl Bachelder’s engaging story offers a clear path for leaders to follow, and what makes her message so compelling is the tremendous results she’s produced. I highly recommend this book.” —Stephen M. R. Covey, New York Times-bestselling author of The Speed of Trust

Book To Serve My Country to Serve My Race

Download or read book To Serve My Country to Serve My Race written by Brenda L. Moore and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1997-08-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I would have climbed up a mountain to get on the list [to serve overseas]. We were going to do our duty. Despite all the bad things that happened, America was our home. This is where I was born. It was where my mother and father were. There was a feeling of wanting to do your part. --Gladys Carter, member of the 6888th To Serve My Country, to Serve my Race is the story of the historic 6888th, the first United States Women's Army Corps unit composed of African-American women to serve overseas. While African-American men and white women were invited, if belatedly, to serve their country abroad, African-American women were excluded for overseas duty throughout most of WWII. Under political pressure from legislators like Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., the NAACP, the black press, and even President Roosevelt, the U.S. War Department was forced to deploy African-American women to the European theater in 1945. African-American women, having succeeded, through their own activism and political ties, in their quest to shape their own lives, answered the call from all over the country, from every socioeconomic stratum. Stationed in France and England at the end of World War II, the 6888th brought together women like Mary Daniel Williams, a cook in the 6888th who signed up for the Army to escape the slums of Cleveland and to improve her ninth-grade education, and Margaret Barnes Jones, a public relations officer of the 6888th, who grew up in a comfortable household with a politically active mother who encouraged her to challenge the system. Despite the social, political, and economic restrictions imposed upon these African-American women in their own country, they were eager to serve, not only out of patriotism but out of a desire to uplift their race and dispell bigoted preconceptions about their abilities. Elaine Bennett, a First Sergeant in the 6888th, joined because "I wanted to prove to myself and maybe to the world that we would give what we had back to the United States as a confirmation that we were full- fledged citizens." Filled with compelling personal testimony based on extensive interviews, To Serve My Country is the first book to document the lives of these courageous pioneers. It reveals how their Army experience affected them for the rest of their lives and how they, in turn, transformed the U.S. military forever.

Book Serve Up Coach Down

Download or read book Serve Up Coach Down written by Nathan Jamail and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2021-06 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Serve Up Coach Down is Nathan Jamail's most impactful and contentious book yet. It debunks the myths of servant leadership that other books sell, namely that leaders in the middle must serve down to their people and defend up to their bosses. This is the exact opposite of what they should do: serve up to their bosses and coach down to their people. And it is costing them their power every day. 98% of leaders are leading from the middle, meaning they have a boss or bosses they answer to and employees they lead. From senior vice presidents to front-line managers, they should be the most powerful leaders in any organization. They are responsible for alignment, speed of change, buy-in, belief, accountability, and execution. Yet they often struggle with all of that by getting their teams to step up and winning approval from those above them. Why? Because they are serving down and defending up. Serve Up Coach Down addresses the key issues and obstacles that prevent leaders in the middle from owning the power that should drive their, their team's, and their organization's success and gives organizations the greatest competitive advantage they can have--speed of change--by creating leaders who their bosses can count on and who make their employees better. Want an organization with strong leaders and organizations based on a strong team culture built on strong leaders developing other strong leaders? Serve Up Coach Down is for you!

Book excerpt: The ever increasing interest in the Liturgical Traditions of the Church gives rise to the need for adequately trained altar servers and what better way to assist than to resurrect this classic! This famous handbook is an invaluable resource for all altar boys from beginning to advanced. Though written for Instructors, this manual can also be used for home study, schools and sacristies. Dom Matthew Britt begins by offering specific instructions on common ceremonial actions, including how to make the proper bow, how to light the candles, and how to carry the Missal. He also walks the servers step-by-step through Low Mass (with one or two servers), High Mass, Solemn High Masses, Nuptial and Requiem Masses, Vespers and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Contains more than 24 diagrams showing the various actions and positions of acolytes, Thurifer, Master of Ceremonies, Sub-Deacon, and Deacon. Includes servers responses for the 1962 Latin Mass. How to Serve is a brief and clear manual from 1934 that is simply the best book of its kind. It will once again become the standard reference for acolytes, handing on to young servers the disciplines necessary for reverent Catholic ceremonies. Every altar boy "should realize that...he is , after the priest, and in the absence of other priests or Sacred Ministers, the closest one in the whole church to our Divine Savior in the Blessed Sacrament. Occupying this very important position in his parish, an Altar Boy's conduct should be exemplary at all times and in all places." - Rev. Joseph W. Kavanagh, author of The Altar Boys Ceremonial

Book Built to Serve

Book excerpt: Most people wake up and drive to a job that they hate. Think about your five closest friends. Are they happy? Do they live their lives with purpose? Do you? We put on a fake front for what we want people to see and think about us, but the reality is most people aren’t happy. We’re lost. We settle. We aren’t happy with where we are. You can’t be happy if you don’t know your purpose. It’s not possible. You want more but you don’t even know where to start. You know there is more out there. You see others having success and you want it, too; there is nothing wrong with that. You just need help finding your purpose so you can find the success you see all around you. You can be productive, crush your goals, pretend that all the things that you’ve acquired actually mean something…but at the end of the day, if you don’t know your purpose, you’ll always feel like there’s something missing. You’ll know that you’re capable of more and that you’re not living the life you should be. You might be fooling the world, but you’re not fooling the person looking back at you in the mirror. You need to find your actual power source. Your purpose is your source of power. Once you find your purpose it’ll fuel you for life. You’ll do things that you never thought you were capable of. Achieving your purpose will force you to morph into a stronger version of yourself. You’ll have to push through fears, insecurities, and doubts that held you back. But somehow it’ll all feel possible and necessary because you’re purpose-driven now…and that’s the only thing you’ll ever need.
