The panel members rated the appropriateness of indications twice, using a nine-point scale. The initial ratings of appropriateness were done individually and without group discussion. The second-round ratings used a structured method based on consensus procedures. The results showed that these physicians were able to formulate detailed lists of indications for spinal manipulation for low-back pain and rate their appropriateness. There was an increase in agreement and a decrease in disagreement between the initial round and the final round. The final round rated 1,550 indications, and there was agreement on 36 percent and disagreement on 12 percent of the indications. The level of disagreement was somewhat less than in previous ratings of medical procedures by all-medical panels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by an expert on alternative bodywork, this book presents techniques for manipulating the soft tissues of the back in a safe, simple manner. The method avoids the high velocity, low amplitude thrusting techniques employed by chiropractors. Instead, it utilizes the intuitive sense of somatic bodyworkers combined with the proven theory and technique of Rolfing to provide safe and effective treatment. Maitland shows how to elegantly release joint fixations in the spine, sacrum, pelvis, and ribcage by using subtle soft tissue techniques, rather than the thrusting techniques that "pop" the joints. This gentler kind of individualized Rolfing work is thoroughly described within an explanation of biomechanics, aided by drawings and photographs which depict techniques and anatomy.

Book The Appropriateness of Spinal Manipulation for Low back Pain

Download or read book The Appropriateness of Spinal Manipulation for Low back Pain written by Paul G. Shekelle and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains a literature review on spinal manipulation treatment for low-back pain, covering the literature from 1955 to 1991, and gathering data from 76 sources, including 22 controlled trials of the use of spinal manipulation for low-back pain. Based on limited data, it is estimated that about 5 percent of the U.S. population uses chiropractors annually. Without systematic reports on the frequency of complications, anecdotal evidence suggests that the serious complications of spinal manipulation include death, paraplegia, and advancement of unrecognized coexisting medical disorders because of misdiagnosis; the rate of these occurrences is probably low. The literature on the efficacy of spinal manipulation is of uneven quality; given that caveat, support is consistent for the use of spinal manipulation as a treatment for patients with acute low-back pain and an absence of other signs of lower-limb nerve-root involvement.
