It is my belief that with a great Creator, God, and his divine intervention in our lives, we, as his children, will be carried through life’s traumatic experiences. It is my belief that I and all of humankind were created for a great purpose. The writing of this book, or its purpose, is not to gather sympathy, but the opposite, to explain that an individual does not have to allow their childhood or economic environment to set the standard for the rest of their lives. In my childhood, I attempted to subconsciously close myself off, mentally or emotionally, from what was occurring. This denial allowed me a way of surviving through early life. I called out to God, the great Creator, for help and guidance many times. Without the help and the great love of God, these traumas would probably have killed me from the shock. From an early age and throughout my adult life, I’ve had to find ways to deal with my traumatic past. With God and a drifter named Mr. Gabe who showed up at all the right times like a guardian angel who seemed to know a lot about the same God my grandmother talked about, I did survive throughout these traumas and have lived a relatively good life and achieved challenges that could only have been possible with God’s love.

Isaac Cline, the chief of the bureau, had hoisted the flags on Friday morning, and they had danced and popped in the brisk north wind all day. The red one, with the black box in its middle, meant that a particularly malevolent storm was a possibility. The white one, above it, meant that if it came, it would come from the northwest. But not too many people had seen the flags. And now the first big drops of rain plopped into the sand dunes and salt grass of the island and slid through the muted light of the gas street lights in town, and nobody paid much attention to them. Those in bed closed their eyes and let the tapping of the rain sing them to sleep. It had come a long way, this storm. Almost two weeks before, somewhere on the immense, swaying surface of the eternal Atlantic, a small portion of the sea had rebelled against the unremitting late summer heat, and heaved itself up in protest. Africa lay a thousand miles to the east, over the vast, bowllike curve of the world, and many more thousands of miles of ocean and sky stretched endlessly to the west. She was the wife of a successful retail executive and a dedicated mother who did all the usual time-consuming things to support her son's activities. Behind the scenes she worked as time allowed to create a richly humorous prose document portraying her childhood experiences. Those sketches written in the 1950's totaling about a hundred pages were the seeds which inspired this book. Mrs. Stelling passed away at the age of 82 in 1998. Peter James Stelling was born in Charlotte, NC, in 1943 and has spent most of his life in Atlanta. A graduate of Washington and Lee University and Grady College of the University of Georgia, he spent four years in advertising in New York before returning home to work for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and for two different firms specializing in Group Incentive Sales Travel and Meeting Planning. One of his most memorable work experiences was serving as road manager for a traveling symphony orchestra during the early years of Robert Shaw's tenure as their Music Director. Now a contentedly retired father of two and grandfather of four, he is grateful for having had the luxury of time to complete this unique family document. He remains an active supporter of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Atlanta Opera, Trinity Presbyterian Church, and serves on the Board of Governors of the Vinings Club in suburban Atlanta.
