Book Bacillus thuringiensis Biotechnology

Download or read book Bacillus thuringiensis Biotechnology written by Estibaliz Sansinenea and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-14 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) has been used as a biopesticide in agriculture, forestry and mosquito control because of its advantages of specific toxicity against target insects, lack of polluting residues and safety to non-target organisms. The insecticidal properties of this bacterium are due to insecticidal proteins produced during sporulation. Despite these ecological benefits, the use of Bt biopesticides has lagged behind the synthetic chemicals. Genetic improvement of Bt natural strains, in particular Bt recombination, offers a promising means of improving efficacy and cost-effectiveness of Bt-based bioinsecticide products to develop new biotechnological applications. On the other hand, the different Bacillus species have important biotechnological applications; one of them is carried out by producing secondary metabolites, which are the study object of natural product chemistry. The amazing structural variability of these compounds has attracted the curiosity of chemists and the biological activities possessed by natural products have inspired the pharmaceutical industry to search for lead structures in microbial extracts. Screening of microbial extracts reveals the large structural diversity of natural compounds with broad biological activities, such as antimicrobial, antiviral, immunosuppressive, and antitumor activities that enable the bacterium to survive in its natural environment. These findings widen the target range of Bacillus spp., in special B. thuringiensis, besides insecticidal activity and help people to better understand its role in soil ecosystem.

Book Agricultural Biotechnology and the Environment

Download or read book Agricultural Biotechnology and the Environment written by Sheldon Krimsky and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probing the profitable new science of creating--and altering--life forms "Extraordinarily well documented . . . remarkably clear. This is the most comprehensive coverage of these issues to date. It will be required reading for some time." -- Lawrence Busch, Michigan State University "Krimsky and Wrubel not only describe the components of agricultural biotechnology, they address and analyze controversies involving the risks and benefits of new technologies. Coverage of technical to social components of agricultural biotechnology is unusually complete and thorough. Their even-handed and comprehensive approach to these topics is rare and extremely valuable." -- Richard Weinzierl, University of Illinois Modern agriculture is being transformed by the genetic alteration of seeds, animals, and microorganisms, a process that has produced such products as flavor saver tomatoes and crops resistant to specific insects or herbicides. Agricultural Biotechnology and the Environment is the first comprehensive overview of the ongoing transformation of agriculture, exploring the impact of genetic engineering from scientific, social, ethical, and ecological perspectives. Sheldon Krimsky and Roger Wrubel detail the impact the new generation of products is expected to have on agricultural practice and the environment and assess the degree to which current trends in biotechnology match earlier expectations. They also analyze the social and political response to innovations resulting from genetic technology. Closely examined in each of three areas--transgenic plants, genetically engineered microorganisms, and transgenic animals--are technical and scientific problems, social controversies, and anticipated environmental impacts. An objective, detailed look at a subject of interest to a broad spectrum of readers, Agricultural Biotechnology and the Environment will be of interest to researchers in the new biotechnology fields as well as to educated general readers and policymakers. A volume in the series The Environment and the Human Condition

Book Transgenic Plants

Download or read book Transgenic Plants written by Allan J. Hruska and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transgenic crops are now grown in the USA and several other countries, and are now entering some of the developing countries. It was felt that few people in most of the Central American countries knew about the potential benefits and risks of the new technology of transgenic crops, so a workshop was held at the Panamerican Agriculture College in Honduras in May 1996. This publication sets out the presentations, discussion and recommendations of this regional workshop, with reference to cotton, maize and rice crops, legislation aspects and pest resistance management. The booklet with 11 chapters provides an interesting overview of the subject, which would be of interest to other areas of the world. (Review by G.A. Matthews, in: Crop Protection vol. 6, issue 5 (1997)p. 492)
