All of the baccalaureates of the ten years of his presidency at Illinois College are published, together with other sermons and addresses, some from his earlier ministry, some from his later, one written even beneath the on-creeping shadow of his last illness. It is regretted that so much must remain in manu script. Variety of topic has been regarded in putting forth these few productions from the many. Toward the end of the volume, is a thesaurus of selections from his still unpublished writings. No especial arrangement of them has been at tempted; may they be found helpful and suggestive in leisure moments! After all else was ready for the press, a sketch of Private and Public Life was prepared, though with some hesitation. No elaborate coloring has been sought. If we have kept in harmony with the modest nature of the man; if we have con fined our own affectionate estimate to a true outline of his work; if we have brought others to a better knowledge of his genuine and lovable character, then we are content. The preface of an English book, published the other year, was simply a printed extract from the author's will, directing what disposition should be made of his literary works. If one could. In any way, reproduce those unwritten wills which lives attest, our only prefatory allusion to these sermons and addresses need have been the speaker's ruling purpose to be of service unto all whom his words should reach. In all I have had the honor to act officially in sending forth thirty-one graduating classes: eight from schools in Kentucky; fourteen from Hiram College, Hiram, Ohio; four from the Texas Christian University, and five from Oklahoma Christian University. It often fell upon me to preach the baccalaureate and convocation sermons. It was the universal custom at Hiram for the president to give both of these addresses, from which custom I did not depart while I was president of that institution. These sermons were necessarily carefully prepared, and embraced my best thoughts along lines that I deemed most advantageous to those entering upon student life, and to those going out as graduates to do the work of life. I have decided to put these sermons in book form, believing that they will be appreciated by my old students and be, as I trust, of some benefit to them. Furthermore, this is getting to be a day of graduating addresses. High schools are springing up all over the country, offering courses almost equal to the college courses of fifty years ago. D Matthew henry buckham came from England with his parents when but an infant. His destiny seems to have been foreshadowed in his birth, which occurred on the fourth of July, 1832. His father was an Independent, or Congregational minister, who sometimes added to his small stipend and his practical usefulness by conducting a private school. Matthew entered college at the age Of fifteen, with an admirable grounding, received from his father, in all the subjects which a freshman should know. At the age Of nineteen he took his first degree, winning the highest honors Of a class many Of whom were five to eight years his seniors. For two years he was headmaster Of the Old academy at Lenox, Mass. Then tutor in languages for a year at Burlington. Two years were next given to study and research abroad, chiefly at University College, London. Upon his return (in 1856) he accepted a temporary position on the teaching staff of the University Of Vermont as professor Of English Liter ature, and the year following was made professor Of Greek. In 1863 he took up again the duties Of the chair Of Rhetoric and English Literature, and continued in charge Of both departments till 1871, when President Angell's resignation opened the way for his promotion to the presidency. At his death, 29 November, 1910, he had already well begun his fortieth year of oversight and direction, and was accounted the Dean Of American college presidents. As an instructor Professor Buckham was admirably equipped for his work. His scholarship was accurate, his memory held fast whatever his wide reading had gathered. His taste in English Literature and his skill in the use Of his mother tongue made his example in the lecture room Of even more value than his formal precepts and criticism.
