Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third fascicle of Babylonian Planetary Omens contains the edition of all cuneiform texts dealing with the planet Venus known to us. Book Kardunia Babylonia under the Kassites 1

Download or read book Kardunia Babylonia under the Kassites 1 written by Alexa Bartelmus and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karduniaš, as the kingdom of the Kassites in Babylonia was called in ancient times, was the neighbor and rival of great powers such as Egypt, the Hittites, and Assyria. But while our knowledge of the latter kingdoms has made huge progress in the last decades, the Kassites have until recently been largely ignored by modern scholarship. Recently a number of scholars have embarked on research into different aspects of Late Bronze Age Babylonia. The desire to share the results of these new investigations resulted in an international conference, which was held at Munich University in July 2011. The presentations given at this meeting have been revised for publication in the current volume. This book gives an overview of current research on the Kassites and is the first larger survey of their culture ever. An invaluable introduction by Kassite expert Professor John A. Brinkman is followed by seventeen specialist contributions investigating different aspects of the Kassites. These include detailed historical, social, cultural, archaeological, and art historical studies concerning the Kassites from their first arrival in Mesopotamia, during the period when a Kassite Dynasty ruled Babylonia (c. 1595-1155 BC), and in the subsequent aftermath. Concentrating on southern Mesopotamia the contributions also discuss Kassite relations and presence in neighboring regions. The book is completed by a substantial bibliography and a detailed index.

Book Solar Omens of Enuma Anu Enlil

Download or read book Solar Omens of Enuma Anu Enlil written by W. H. van Soldt and published by Peeters. This book was released on 1995 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Babylonians considered the corpus of celestial omens, called Enuma Anu Enlil, the culmination of scholarship. A modern edition of this series of 70 tablets was initiated by Erica Reiner in cooperation with David Pingree in 1975. Since then tablets 63 (Venus; 1975), 50-51 (fixed stars; 1981) and 12-22 (lunar eclipses; 1988, by F. Rochberg-Halton) have been published. The present volume brings an edition of tablets 22-29, devoted to the sun and dealing with a variety of phenomena, such as its sighting in clouds of particular shapes and colours and in a halo, the appearance of "disks" (parhelion, paraselene etc.), the sun's radiance and colours, unexpected appearances and early risings, athmospheric phenomena at sunrise and sunset, conjunction with planets and stars, and features called "glow" and coloured "webs". The edition follows the pattern of earlier volumes, providing introductions, transliterations, translations and short notes for each tablet, together with colophons, ancient commentaries (on parts of all tablets), excerpts (of tablets 24-26), and unplaced fragments. The original tablets (from Assur, Babylon and Nineveh) have been collated and new sources are offered in 15 photographs. Indexes list all words, names and texts.

Book Astral Sciences in Mesopotamia

Download or read book Astral Sciences in Mesopotamia written by Hermann Hunger and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-11-02 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronomy and astrology, or the astral sciences, played an enormous, if not a key role in the political and religious life of the Ancient Near East, and, later, of the Greek and Roman world. This is the first comprehensive and up-to-date account of the origins of the astral sciences in the Ancient Near East. Every type of Sumerian or Akkadian text dealing with descriptive or mathematical astronomy, including many individual tablets are thoroughly dealt with. All aspects, such as the history of discovery, reconstruction, and interpretation come to the fore, accompanied by a full bibliography. At that the reader will find descriptions of astronomical contents, an explanation of their scientific meaning and the place a given genre or tablet has in the development of astronomy both within the Mesopotamian culture and outside of it. Because celestial omens are intimately related to astronomy in Mesopotamian science, these are also discussed extensively. The material is arranged both chronologically and thematically, so as to help make Astral Sciences in Mesopotamia a reference work on the subject in its truest sense.

Book Babylonian Horoscopes

Download or read book Babylonian Horoscopes written by Francesca Rochberg and published by American Philosophical Society. This book was released on 1998 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging for the first time in the 5th cent. B.C., horoscopes reflect the application of the idea and practice of celestial divination to the life of the individual. Whereas an omen focuses on a single astronomical phenomenon, the horoscope takes into account the positions of the moon, sun, and five planets at the moment of a birth. As such, Babylonian horoscopes presuppose the concept of the ecliptic and a methodology for obtaining the positions of heavenly bodies when they are not observable. This is the first complete edition of the extant cuneiform horoscopes -- with transcription and philological and astronomical commentary. This study offers a systematic description of the documents as a definable class of Babylonian astronomical/astrological texts.

Download or read book The Heavenly Writing written by Francesca Rochberg and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-09-27 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In antiquity, the expertise of the Babylonians in matters of the heavens was legendary and the roots of both western astronomy and astrology are traceable in cuneiform tablets going back to the second and first millennia BC. The Heavenly Writing, first publsiehd in 2004, discusses the place of Babylonian celestial divination, horoscopy, and astronomy in Mesopotamian intellectual culture. Focusing chiefly on celestial divination and horoscopes, it traces the emergence of personal astrology from the tradition of celestial divination and the use of astronomical methods in horoscopes. It further takes up the historiographical and philosophical issue of the nature of these Mesopotamian 'celestial sciences' by examining elements traditionally of concern to the philosophy of science, without sacrificing the ancient methods, goals, and interests to a modern image of science. This book will be of particular interest to those concerned with the early history of science.

It is an up-to-date, reliable guide to the language of the Sumerians, the inventors of cuneiform writing in the late 4th millennium B.C., and thus essential contributors to the high cultural standard of the whole of Mesopotamia and beyond. Following traditional lines, the Grammar describes general characteristics, origins, linguistic environment, phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, and phraseology. Due attention is given to the symbiosis with Semitic Akkadian, with which Sumerian was to form a veritable linguistic area. With lucid explanations of all technical linguistic theory.
