Book excerpt: Although many studies have been devoted to Augustine's City of God and its most important theme, viz. the antithesis between the civitas Dei and the terrena civitas, until now no consensus has been reached concerning the sources of this doctrine. Was Augustine decisively influenced by Manichaeism, by (Neo)Platonism, the Stoa or Philo, by the Donatist Tyconius? Or should we look in another direction and refer to preceding Christian, Jewish, and especially to archaic Jewish-Christian traditions? This lucidly written books opens with a survey of the research carried out so far on the aim, structure and central theme of the City of God. Chapter 2 analyzes the essentials of Augustine's life, of his City of God, and of his doctrine of the two cities. Making use of one of the recently discovered letters of Augustine in Chapter 3 the author describes the City of God as an apology and as a catechetical work. Chapter 4 provides an investigation into the possible sources of Augustine's doctrine of the two cities in Manichaeism, in (Neo)Platonism, the Stoa and Philo, and in the works of Tyconius. The idea of two antithetical cities proves to be present most clearly in writings in which, closely related to Jewish thinking, archaic Christian concepts occupy an important place. In a final chapter some pertinent remarks are made on Jewish and Jewish-Christian influences on pre-Augustinian Christianity in Africa.

Book The Fall and Rise of Jerusalem

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period of the demise of the kingdom of Judah at the end of the 6th century B.C.E., the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians, the exile of the elite to Babylon, and the reshaping of the territory of the new province of Judah, culminating at the end of the century with the first return of exiles--all have been subjects of intense scrutiny during the last decade. Lipschits takes into account the biblical textual evidence, the results of archaeological research, and the reports of Babylonian and Egyptian sources and provides a comprehensive survey and analysis of the evidence for the history of this 100-year-long era. He provides a lucid historical survey that will, no doubt, become the baseline for all future studies of this era.

Book excerpt: In Judeans in Babylonia, Tero Alstola presents a comprehensive investigation of deportees in the sixth and fifth centuries BCE. By using cuneiform documents as his sources, he offers the first book-length social historical study of the Babylonian Exile, commonly regarded as a pivotal period in the development of Judaism. The results are considered in the light of the wider Babylonian society and contrasted against a comparison group of Neirabian deportees. Studying texts from the cities and countryside and tracking developments over time, Alstola shows that there was notable diversity in the Judeans’ socio-economic status and integration into Babylonian society.

Book Writing the City

  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2002-09-11

  • Pages : 634 pages

Download or read book Writing the City written by Peter Preston and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `The expression of human experience it embodies ... includes all personal history'. Saul Bellow's view of the city is far from that of classic geographical descriptions which look at growth or decline, demographic patterns, traffic flows and economic potential: these empirically conceived models of urban geography fail to accommodate the crucial human aspect of city life. Located at the interface of geography and literature, Writing the City visualizes the city through the hopes, aspirations, disappointments and pains of international novelists and creative writers. From Manchester, Montreal and Sydney to Osaka, Varanasi amd Odessa, cities become more than their built environment, more than a set of class or economic relationships: they are also an experience to be lived, suffered and undergone. Thus cities are seen in terms of the innocence of an Eden now lost, a threat of sinful Babylon and the promise of a New Jerusalem.

Book excerpt: Is the Bible a Hellenistic book? The essays in this volume respond to that challenging question, formulated by Niels Peter Lemche, and offer everything from qualified agreement to vociferous opposition. In so doing, they debate and illuminate the many features of Jewish writing in the Second Temple period, including not only the scriptures themselves and their own history, but the non-canonized literature of the late Second-Temple period. As with all the volumes in this pioneering series, the editor, Lester Grabbe, introduces and reflects upon the discussion and its implications for one of the most controversial topics in current biblical studies.

Book Glimpses of Lehi s Jerusalem

Download or read book Glimpses of Lehi s Jerusalem written by John Woodland Welch and published by Maxwell Institute. This book was released on 2004 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine Jerusalem around 600 BC, the world of Lehi, Sariah, Laban, Zoram, Josiah, and Jeremiah. How did people live? What motivated them? And what eventually destroyed their city? The answers to such questions foster better understanding of the prophetic words of Lehi, Nephi, and Jacob in the Book of Mormon. Much of that era was lost forever when Jerusalem met its prophesied fate and was destroyed by the Babylonians. The Temple of Solomon and the city walls were torn down, buildings burned, treasuries looted, people killed or deported, records lost or destroyed, and certain religious beliefs changed or extinguished. Glimpses of Lehi's Jerusalem offers modern readers a vivid look at revealing events in a crucial quarter century in world history.

Book Mystery Babylon When Jerusalem Embraces the Antichrist An Exposition of Revelation 18 and 19

Download or read book Mystery Babylon When Jerusalem Embraces the Antichrist An Exposition of Revelation 18 and 19 written by Chris White and published by . This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth." - Revelation 17:18 Which city is this that reigns over all the kings of the earth? Rome? New York? Mecca? There are over 90 Characteristics given in the book of Revelation about the city of Mystery Babylon, and none of these three cities meets all of the criteria. But there is one city that does...or should I say will. Too often people look for the city of Mystery Babylon in history, or in their present day, as opposed to what the scriptures say we will see in the future. The Bible tells us exactly which city will be the capital city of the Antichrist in the last days, it tells us the city that will promote the Antichrist's worship to the rest of the world, and the city in which the Antichrist will institute the greatest persecution of all time. That city is Jerusalem. The city of Mystery Babylon will be Jerusalem when it embraces the Antichrist as if he was their long awaited Messiah. The reason that she is referred to as a "harlot" is the same reason she was referred to as a harlot hundreds of times in scripture, because she is committing spiritual adultery. "How is the faithful city become an harlot! - Isaiah 1:21a Consider just a few similarities between Mystery Babylon and Jerusalem: 1.) Mystery Babylon is said to kill the prophets in Revelation 18:24.Yet the only city that has ever been recorded as killing the prophets is Jerusalem: "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets..." - Matthew 23:37 2.) The Bible says that Mystery Babylon will be held accountable for ALL the righteous blood shed on the earth. Yet Jesus said the exact same thing about Jerusalem: "That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth..." - Mat 23:35a This is just scratching the surface. In the last days the Antichrist will seek to convince the Jews that their Messiah has finally come, he will seek to make them, and the rest of the world think that the kingdom age has begun. This is the only view of Mystery Babylon that can withstand a meticulous verse by verse examination. *Find out about the "seven hills" and why the bible refers to them as "kings" in almost every bible translation. *Find out why every item brought to Mystery Babylon are used for temple construction, daily sacrifice, and a vast, worldwide pilgrimage system.
