The shadows on the table looked like prison bars again. This time it was Star being caged. Star, who thought leaving made her free. That life would be all hunky-dory shampooing heads and sweeping floors while Mama got slapped around-far enough away so she wouldn't have to hear the screams. That's when I knew for sure-I couldn't leave Mama. And Star couldn't make me any more than I could make her stay. A painfully beautiful novel that exposes the haunting world of spousal abuse Blue's family is coming apart at the seams. After Pa drowned in the river, Mama up and married Jinx, whom Blue and Star know is big trouble. And now Star has run away, leaving Blue behind. It was hard enough to watch Mama get knocked around when Jinx was in one of his "moods," but now, with Star gone, Jinx has spun out of control. It's up to Blue to find Star and get help for Mama, to piece the family back together again. But Blue is running out of time. With biting realism and poignancy, this compelling young-adult novel explores Blue's struggle to protect her family and stand up against what she knows is wrong.

Download or read book Out of the Blue A Western Novel written by Bertrand W. Sinclair and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once upon a time, as the old tales used to begin, a young man came riding down the main street of Fort Worth in the sovereign State of Texas. He was mounted on a bright sorrel horse, which stepped daintily in the dust of the thoroughfare, for Fort Worth had not yet come to the high estate of asphalt paving and such civic ornamentation as followed in the wake of petroleum and cotton. The longhorn was still king of the plains, a source of wealth in his unnumbered thousands. The cattle kings and their followers were like the ancient Romans; they made their own roads—made them into far places, in a spirit of high emprise. They did not mind a little dust here and there. This rider, who looked out from under a gray Stetson hat, holding his reins in a buckskin-gloved hand, while he scanned the windows of the various establishments that fronted on the street, was plainly of the range. He was young and deeply tanned. He was armed, as men commonly were in those times. His saddle, bridle, and spurs were beautifully made, and the silver-inlaid steel clinked faintly, as his horse moved. The coiled-rawhide reata at his saddle fork was limber with much use. He might have been considered picturesque. That idea would never have occurred to him or his fellows. The seed of romance indubitably lay in the stout hearts of Rock Holloway and his like, living and moving and having their being on the fringes of an encroaching civilization, but they were practical in their activities, which had to do with a major industry, wherein there was doubtless romance, but also a considerable portion of hard work and long chances which the range man accepted as incidental to his calling. This long-limbed youth, with the keen eyes and pleasant face, could probably have told why he preferred the range to a university campus; but he was merely the occasional exception. And he may have had glimpses of the future, apart from cattle and trail herds and the wide pastures that were in process of reclamation from the bison and the Indian. But he would never have embodied such dreams in words. And he was not steeping his soul in the color and aspect of a little cow town when he rode along that street. He was looking for a certain place. Presently, and without very much trouble, he found it.
Download or read book Out of the Blue written by Samantha Killary and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-10-23 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Out of the Blue is the harrowing true story of one woman's journey to be heard. At a young age, Samantha Killary was introduced to a world no child should ever know. Sexual assault, physical violence, and psychological grooming altered her path forever distorting her perceptions of love, lust, and legitimacy and it was all done at the hands of one of Louisville Metro Police Department's most trusted officers. Throughout her sorted journey, Samantha fell victim to the familiar cycles of drug addiction, promiscuity, abusive relationships, even teetering on the edge of the sex trade. But she is a victim no longer. Her abuser's current status as an inmate in one of Kentucky's most infamous prisons is a testament to that. Bringing her truth to light did not come without a cost. She is now isolated from a family she loves and community that failed her on every level. This is a story of hope, heartache, and the courage to speak out and like all tales of survival, it is one that deserves to be heard.

He stared into her burning eyes for a long time, having known for sixteen years that this moment would one day come, that she would have to know the truth someday. Its called Mist, he heard his voice saying. Its a powerful field, something along the lines of magnetism. You know, that game we used to play on the kitchen table, Cathy; when you tried to push the positive sides of your magnets together and they repelled each other, and one scooted away without even touching the other, and how you used to giggle? She studied him for a long time. But when I reversed one of them, they didnt repel, they attracted. He looked away from her, his little girl, the miracle. Fear throbbed in his eyes as he stared out the window at the Blue River Valley beyond the farmhouse. He had always known that they couldnt hide here, nor anywhere. She would never be safe, not anywhere on Earth, not anywhere in the universe. He had always known that this day would come. Mist, Cathy said, breaking him out of his stare. Mist. Thats the field that surrounds you. Daddy, am I human?

Book excerpt: In The Blue Last, Richard Jury finally faces the last thing in the world he wants to deal with—the war that killed his mother, his father, his childhood. Mickey Haggerty, a DCI with the London City police, has asked for Jury's help. Two skeletons have been unearthed in the City during the excavation of London's last bombsite, where once a pub stood called the The Blue Last. Mickey believes that a child who survived the bombing has been posing for over fifty years as a child who didn't. The grandchild of brewery magnet Oliver Tyndale supposedly survived that December 1940 bombing . . . but did she? Mickey also has a murder to solve. Simon Croft, prosperous City financial broker, and son of the one-time owner of The Blue Last is found shot to death in his Thames-side house. But the book he was writing about London during the German blitzkrieg has disappeared. Jury wants to get eyes and ears into Tynedale Lodge, and looks to his friend, Melrose Plant, to play the role. Reluctantly, Plant plays it, accompanied on his rounds of the Lodge gardens by nine-year-old Gemma Trim, orphan and ward of Oliver Tynedale; and Benny Keagan, a resourceful twelve-year-old orphaned delivery boy. And Richard Jury may not make it out alive. A stolen book, stolen lives, or is any of this what it seems? Identity, memory, provenance - these are all called into question in The Blue Last
