And to think pink was once my favorite color . . . Then the two pink lines appeared. Pink, as in positive . . . as in pregnant . . . as in pure, unadulterated panic. This wasn’t supposed to happen: I’m scheduled to marry the handsome, successful, and very appropriate Ross Davis in six months. Unfortunately, while Ross may not rock my world with kitchen-table sex, his technique worked well enough to put a bun in my thirtysomething oven . . . Don’t get me wrong, babies are great—in theory. But I enjoyed my life the way it was. Loved my job, my rooftop apartment, my friends; was having fun planning my wedding and gazing at my pretty three-carat diamond. I didn't need anything more . . . did I? Well, whatever I needed, here’s what I currently have: A nasty case of morning sickness, a future mother-in-law obsessed with “Ross’s Baby,” and a custom-designed wedding dress I’ll soon be too fat to wear. Now, as I burst the seams on my pencil skirts, I’m trying to take some small comfort in the fact that one is never too bloated for a really cute purse. But impending motherhood also has me reassessing more than my wardrobe—and wondering how fast I can finish growing up . . .

Now this Student Edition in two volumes makes this rich, rugged story of the American pioneer spirit more accessible to young readers. Patrick Smith tells of three generations of the MacIveys, a Florida family battling the hardships of the frontier. The story opens in 1858, when Tobias and Emma MacIvey arrive in the Florida wilderness with their son, Zech, to start a new life, and ends in 1968 with Solomon MacIvey, who realizes that his wealth has not been worth the cost to the land. Between is a sweeping story rich in Florida history with a cast of memorable characters who battle wild animals, rustlers, Confederate deserters, mosquitoes, starvation, hurricanes, and freezes to carve a kingdom out of the Florida swamp. In this volume, meet young Zech MacIvey, who learns to ride like the wind through the Florida scrub on Ishmael, his marshtackie horse, his dogs, Nip and Tuck, at this side. His parents, Tobias and Emma, scratch a living from the land, gathering wild cows from the swamp and herding them across the state to market. Zech learns the ways of the land from the Seminoles, with whom his life becomes entwined as he grows into manhood. Next in series > > See all of the books in this series

Book Olive and Babyland

Download or read book Olive and Babyland written by Marchie Bracken and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2016-11-16 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When five-year-old Olive learns that Samanthas grandmother has died, she goes to her daddy and asks what dying is. In order to answer her question, Olives daddy tells her a tale from when he was a little boy about a baby bird that had fallen out of its nest. The story of what happens next helps Olive understand that death is about love. This childrens story seeks in a loving, ecumenical, and sensitive way to help children understand what death is. March Bracken has, again, articulated death in a manner that is light and natural. Discussions of death can be just as difficult with adults as with children. This story breathes its love light onto a topic we find so challenging to approach. I can absolutely see how this soft tale of a child and her father could positively impact those dealing with stages of dementia. The story is refreshing, brief and honest. Tricia James, LCSW, hospice social worker In Olive and Babyland, March Bracken has written a tender and evocative tale of death and rebirth for children and their adults, a tale that explains death in gentle words and images that speak in love light. Bertha Rogers, poet, master teaching artist, founding director of Bright Hill Press and Literary Center

Book Childhood s Favorites and Fairy Stories

Download or read book Childhood s Favorites and Fairy Stories written by Hamilton Wright Mabie and published by anboco. This book was released on 2016-08-24 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Books are as much a part of the furnishing of a house as tables and chairs, and in the making of a home they belong, not with the luxuries but with the necessities. A bookless house is not a home; for a home affords food and shelter for the mind as well as for the body. It is as great an offence against a child to starve his mind as to starve his body, and there is as much danger of reducing his vitality and putting him at a disadvantage in his lifework in the one as in the other form of deprivation. There was a time when it was felt that shelter, clothing, food and physical oversight comprised the whole duty of a charitable institution to dependent children; to-day no community would permit such an institution to exist unless it provided school privileges. An acute sense of responsibility toward children is one of the prime characteristics of American society, shown in the vast expenditures for public education in all forms, in the increasing attention paid to light, ventilation, and safety in school buildings, in the opening of play grounds in large cities, in physical supervision of children in schools, and the agitation against the employment of children in factories, and in other and less obvious ways. Children are helpless to protect themselves and secure what they need for health of body and mind; they are exceedingly impressionable; and the future is always in their hands. The first and most imperative duty of parents is to give their children the best attainable preparation for life, no matter at what sacrifice to themselves. There are hosts of fathers and mothers who recognize this obligation but do not know how to discharge it; who are eager to give their children the most wholesome conditions, but do not know how to secure them; who are especially anxious that their children should start early and start right on that highway of education which is the open road to honorable success.
