Book Crossing the Line in Africa

Download or read book Crossing the Line in Africa written by Ambe Ngwa and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2019-01-07 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores a collective understanding of the perception and treatment of borders in Africa. The notion of boundary is universal as boundaries are also an important part of human social organization. Through the ages, boundaries have remained the container by which national space is delineated and contained. For as long as there has been human society based on territoriality and space, there have been boundaries. With their dual character of exclusivism and inclusivism, states have proven to adopt a more structural approach to the respect of the former in consciousness of the esteem of international law governing sovereignty and territorial integrity. However, frontier peoples and their realities have often opted for the latter situation, imposing a more functionalist perception of these imaginary lines and prompting a border opinion shift to a more blurring form of representation and meaning in most African communities. This collective multidisciplinary effort of understanding how tangible and intangible borders have influenced Africas attitude and existence for ages is worthy in its own rights. The difference between what borders are and what they are not to a people is the mere product of their own estimations and practices, a disposition that leads the contributors to this book to study borders beyond states or nations and how borders are crossed or transferred from one point to the other for the convenience of their histories and being.

Book Making Kedjom Medicine

Download or read book Making Kedjom Medicine written by Kent Maynard and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2004-02-11 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conceptions of medicine and medical practice among the Kedjom peoples in Cameroon embrace more than western biomedical understandings of medicine. For these peoples, medicine implies substances, knowledge, practices and institutions bound up with protection and intervention against misfortune and the active promotion of well-being. Nor are medical concerns primarily about the individual. Medicine in the precolonial era was a matter for groups. In short, medicine was preeminently public. Perhaps the major transformation since the colonial period and extending into the postcolonial, has been the increasing commercialization of "traditional" medicine as African healers shift their practices away from group concerns to a focus more concerned with treating the individual. Written in a lucid style, full of vibrant anecdotes, Maynard's book will appeal not only to medical anthropologists and development workers, but also to anyone interested in nonwestern medicine and practices.

Book Communication Efficiency and Rural Development in Africa

Download or read book Communication Efficiency and Rural Development in Africa written by Komben Emmanuel Ngwainmbi and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1995 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing countries, especially African countries, face a myriad of problems as they try to counteract decades of national poverty and political ineffectiveness. If these countries are to secure an active role in world politics, they need communication techniques that are both broad and effective. In this book, Dr. Ngwainmbi presents a comprehensive approach to media and communication in developing countries. The author analyzes traditional methods of communication--dance, ritual, caste, religious oracles, and more--and shows how these communication agents, in addition to the basic affordable modern media, create the context for realizing development efforts. The author also examines the new world information and communication debate and raises new questions about its meaning to Africa. For more information, visit www.manigistics.com.
