This book was released on 2015-10-03 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book should be considered a historical book, as it is the draughts' career of Baba Sy, a prominent Senegalese player. He was able to be the best in the world without reading any books. He had a natural talent and was a self-made man thanks to the game of checkers. I have witnessed the achievements of the great Baba Sy and I have been in the early stage of the great players like Harm Wiersma and Ton Sijbrands, on which I predicted in 1964 that they would be a future world champions. So I know the mentality that one must have to succeed in this mind sport. My 40 year stay in Spain and my research on the Moors permits me to know more about the Islamic custom. And so I am now in a much better position than 40 years ago to comment properly on the life of Baba Sy.

Book The Spanish Origin of the Checkers and Modern Chess Game Volume III

Download or read book The Spanish Origin of the Checkers and Modern Chess Game Volume III written by Govert Westerveld and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-10-18 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1987 we have defended in articles that the Spanish queen Isabella I of Castile (Isabel la Catolica) was the new chess queen (dama) on the chessboard. Other publications were in 1990, 1994, 1997, and 2004. And of course, Marilyn Yalom studied our book during her visit to the National Library in The Hague (Holland) before she wrote Birth of the Chess Queen in 2004. In her book one cannot see that in 1987, 1990, and 1994 we already published material about Isabel la Catolica (Isabel I of Castile) being the new powerful dama or chess queen on the chessboard. In other words we can state here that we have been studying Spanish history and its chess literature for over 30 years. Since 2003 we have also known the development of the new bishop in chess."

Book Woldouby s Biography Extraordinary Senegalese checkers player during his stay in France 1910 1911

Download or read book Woldouby s Biography Extraordinary Senegalese checkers player during his stay in France 1910 1911 written by Govert Westerveld and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-11-09 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every checkers player knows about Woldouby's famous position. This 21 year-old Senegalese drew a lot of attention in Paris in 1910 when he won against all challengers in his store located in the Senegalese village of the Exposition of Jardin d'Acclimatation zoologique. No one understood how this player could win all the games that fast. After Amadou Kandie Woldouby was the second African who participated in a checkers tournament in Paris since he became the city champion in 1911. In 1911 he left France and no one knew his whereabouts since then. In this biography we show that Weiss' golpe (shot) actually was Woldouby's golpe, since he won against Isidore Weiss with it. On the other hand we want to show that Woldouby returned to Senegal in 1911 to take the place of a checkers runner-up in 1913. His biography deserves a worthy place in the history of checkers, as he was the prominent predecessor of the famous Senegalese checkers player Baba Sy.

Book Draughts is More Difficult Than Chess

Download or read book Draughts is More Difficult Than Chess written by Govert Westerveld and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chess was a royal game while draughts was played by the seamen and soldiers and known as the "game of the proletariat". Such terms clearly classify the first game as noble and worthwhile and the second as silly or worse. Many people like to speak about the superiority of chess over the draughts. However, "simple" game does not mean "easy" game. In fact, such people only show their ignorance about these two games. Chess is not harder than draughts. The opposite is true - draughts on a 100-square board is more difficult than chess. Draughts is not easier to play well than chess. The game may seem more monotonous or less interesting than chess, but playing it really well is challenging. Any really good draughts player can play blindfolded just as really good chess players do. In this book you will observe the ideas and comments of a lot of chess and draughts players on the question of which game is more difficult - chess or draughts. You will observe that most of them came to the conclusion that draughts is more difficult than chess. It is interesting to observe that Pierre Gestem who was world champion of draughts and bridge and also a very good chess player observed that for him draughts was the most difficult game in the world. Other world champions of draughts and other chess players were of the opinion that draughts on the 100-square board is much harder than chess. Therefore, draughts can no longer be thought of as a simple game due to people's ignorance. On the other hand, the question always arises whether we can compare these two games as they are so different.

  • Author : Chuck Tryon
  • Publisher : Rutgers University Press

Download or read book On Demand Culture written by Chuck Tryon and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The movie industry is changing rapidly, due in part to the adoption of digital technologies. Distributors now send films to theaters electronically. Consumers can purchase or rent movies instantly online and then watch them on their high-definition televisions, their laptops, or even their cell phones. Meanwhile, social media technologies allow independent filmmakers to raise money and sell their movies directly to the public. All of these changes contribute to an “on-demand culture,” a shift that is radically altering film culture and contributing to a much more personalized viewing experience. Chuck Tryon offers a compelling introduction to a world in which movies have become digital files. He navigates the complexities of digital delivery to show how new modes of access—online streaming services like YouTube or Netflix, digital downloads at iTunes, the popular Redbox DVD kiosks in grocery stores, and movie theaters offering digital projection of such 3-D movies as Avatar—are redefining how audiences obtain and consume motion picture entertainment. Tryon also tracks the reinvention of independent movies and film festivals by enterprising artists who have built their own fundraising and distribution models online. Unique in its focus on the effects of digital technologies on movie distribution, On-Demand Culture offers a corrective to address the rapid changes in the film industry now that movies are available at the click of a button.

Book My Young Years by the Side of Harm Wiersma and Ton Sijbrands Future World Champions

Download or read book My Young Years by the Side of Harm Wiersma and Ton Sijbrands Future World Champions written by Govert Westerveld and published by . This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is convenient to observe the youth group of the Brinta Tournament of 1963/1964, because it would be the start of forthcoming world champions. I was the youth champion of The Netherlands and I also participated in this event. Ton Sijbrands won the tournament with 16 points and had only two draws. I lost to Harm Wiersma and Ton Sijbrands, which was enough for me to tell the whole world that these two players would be future world champions. Ton Sijbrands accomplished this feat in 1972 and 1973. However, the achievements of International Grandmaster Harm Wiersma are better still. He was six times world champion in the years 1976, 1977, 1979, 1981, and 1983- 1984. On the other hand he was Europe's champion in 1999 before Ton Sijbrands! I recommend this book to psycologists and all professionals who work with children as a source of knowledge and a challenge to think in new concepts.

Book Following the Footsteps of Spanish Chess Master Lucena in Italy

Download or read book Following the Footsteps of Spanish Chess Master Lucena in Italy written by Govert Westerveld and published by . This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lucena was the son of the prothonotary Juan Ramírez de Lucena, ambassador of the Catholic monarch in Spain. He wrote a book called Repetición de amores y Arte de Ajedrez con 150 juegos de partido that was published in Salamanca around 1497. Around this time he also wrote another book called Tractado sobre la muerte de Don Diego de Azevedo, but this book was lost. One thing is clear - the name Lucena disappeared and we find it in France in some chess manuscripts and that is all. This has been our research. Its path has not been easy, but thanks to a new authorship recognition program it was possible to detect various books with Lucena's marks. This book reflects the result of four years' research and describes the possible life and work of Lucena in Italy, where he became a very famous person at the papal curia. Consequently thanks to this research students have a new line of investigation about the whereabouts of Lucena for 30 years in Italy at their disposal.
