Book excerpt: Keramat, holy graves and shrines, represent physical markers of Singapore’s history as a multi‐ethnic maritime trading center. They offered sanctified spaces not only for Muslims but also for the entire community in which they emerged. Maintained by self‐appointed caretakers, the stories of keramat often interweave fact with folklore that mirror the history and sensibilities of the community. While once an abundant part of the social landscape of Singapore, many keramat were destroyed during the post‐independence rush to develop. These keramat now face a second vanishing with memories of them fading as caretakers and community members age and pass away. In parallel, many modern Muslims consider keramat as a form of shirk, or polytheism, and tacitly consent to their destruction. This book concludes by critically examining the often‐tense relationship between keramat and authority, both secular and religious, from colonial to modern times. The dilemmas of grappling with puritanical norms and grassroots elaborations in varying modes of preservation are investigated using case studies from Singapore and the wider region. A vital resource for scholars, this work contributes to a people’s history of Singapore, one that both deepens and problematizes official historical accounts.

This work is original in three ways. First, the author investigates Penang Chinese religious practice as a total field of religious practice, suggesting ways in which the religious culture, including spirit-mediumship, has been transformed in the conjuncture with modernity. Second, the book emphasizes the way in which socially marginal spirit mediums use a religious anti-language and unique religious rituals to set themselves apart from mainstream society. Third, the study investigates Penang Chinese religion as the product of a specific history, rather than presenting an overgeneralized overview that claims to represent a single "Chinese religion."

Although the Thai represent less than 10 percent of the Kelantan population, they are vocal about their identity as non-Muslim, non-Malay citizens. At the same time, the Thai grapple with feelings of social and political powerlessness, being neither Thai citizens nor Muslim Malaysians. It describes and analyzes social, political and cultural aspects of their identities by taking into account the conceptual history of Baba designations from 1819-1994. It argues that defining the Babas is misleading, it is more meaningful to adopt a socio-historical approach that differentiates spaciotemporally-distinct Baba identities. Such an approach is usually avoided not only in research on the Babas, but in many other sociological, anthropological or historical studies. It concludes that there is no such thing as a Baba identity, it has always been in flux and needs to be reconstructed taking seriously the conceptual history. The two crucial turning-points in the history of the Babas, namely the Japanese occupation (1942-1945) and self-rule (1959) led to public emphasis on their culture. Prior emphasis on their former status as a political and economic elite have been hitherto neglected. Taking into account all aspects (legal, political, economic, cultural, linguistic, religious) of Baba identities leads us to a fascinating trajectory of a potential group.
