The Romans eventually built magnificent temples over a massive multi-level platform considered to be one of the only prediluvial sites that survived the flood. Here we find the amazing 1000-plus ton stones as part of the original temple platform. The largest cranes in the world would have difficulty lifting, let alone moving, these massive limestone blocks. These stones and other parts of this important site are described in this handy reference guide.

Book History of Baalbek Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Baalbek Classic Reprint written by Michel M. Alouf and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-26 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Baalbek In my previous editions of the history of Baal bek, I had drawn my facts from the best authorities then known, but the new light thrown on the subject by the German Mission shows, that, on some points, my information was inexact. Profiting by the discoveries of the German Mission and by those I have made myself, Ihave been able to make many corrections 111 the present work. In the former edition of my book, I inserted two plans, one representing the original state of the temple, one showing their present con dition. These plans were the most exact to be obtained at that time; the German Mission have provided us with more precise ones. Thanks to them, I have been able to give, in this edition, the plans of the temples, before they were touched by either the Byzantines or the Arabs, thus giving a good idea of the grandeur of Roman Architecture at its apogee. I have also added a plan, showing the present ruined state of the temples. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: At one time, the worldwide fame of the ruins at Baalbek drew huge numbers of tourist crowds. In the present day, a trip to Baalbek is extremely difficult and considerably dangerous. Luckily, the former curator of the site, Michel M. Alouf, made his years of research available in this heavily illustrated work. The massive multi-level platform found at Baalbek, is believed by some scientists to be one of the "only" prediluvial sites that survived the flood. At a much later time, it became very well known to the Romans, who desecrated the site to build their magnificent temples. In fact, the largest Roman temples ever built were not in Rome, but were found at Baalbek. One of the most puzzling aspects of the ruins at Baalbek are the 1,000-plus ton stones which formed part of the original temple platform. A recent visit to the site allowed inspection of these large stones, and of the one at the quarry (pictured on the cover), were new measurements were taken which revealed the largest and most precisely cur stone at the Trilithon may weigh in at over 1,500 tons. The largest modern cranes in the world would have difficulty in lifting, let alone moving, these massive limestone blocks, and yet there they sit. These stones, and many other aspects of this important historical site are described at length in this handy reference guide.

Book Popular Culture and Nationalism in Lebanon

Download or read book Popular Culture and Nationalism in Lebanon written by Christopher Stone and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-09-12 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on an award-winning thesis, this volume is a pioneering study of musical theatre and popular culture and its relation to the production of identity in Lebanon in the second half of the twentieth century. In the aftermath of the departure of the French from Lebanon and the civil violence of 1958, the Rahbani brothers (Asi and Mansour) staged a series of folkloric musical theatrical extravaganzas at the annual Ba‘labakk festival which highlighted the talents of Asi’s wife, the Lebanese diva Fairouz, arguably the most famous living Arab singer. The inclusion of these folkloric vignettes into the festival’s otherwise European dominated cultural agenda created a powerful nation-building combination of what Partha Chatterjee calls the ‘appropriation of the popular’ and the ‘classicization of tradition.’ The Rahbani project coincides with the confluence of increasing internal and external migration in Lebanon, as well as with the rapid development of mass media technology, of which the Ba'labakk festival can be seen as an extension. Employing theories of nationalism, modernity, globalism and locality, this book shows that these factors combined to give the project a potent identity-forming power. Popular Culture and Nationalism in Lebanon is the first study of Fairouz and the Rahbani family in English and will appeal to students and researchers in the field of Middle East studies, Popular culture and musical theatre.
