Book Reinforcement Size Effect in Cryomilled Aluminum Boron Carbide Metal Matrix Composites

Download or read book Reinforcement Size Effect in Cryomilled Aluminum Boron Carbide Metal Matrix Composites written by Hanry Yang and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The physical and mechanical characteristics of cryomilled Al 5083-boron carbide (Al-B4C) metal matrix composites render them both scientifically interesting and technologically important. Trimodal architectures (containing three components: i) nanocrystalline/ultrafine grains, ii) coarse grains, and iii) ceramic reinforcements) allow for multiple degrees of freedom in the design of the microstructures that can be engineered, for example, to achieve combinations of strength, ductility, and damage resistance that are not attainable with conventional materials. The influence of the nano/ultrafine grains and coarse grains has been extensively studied, but the influence of the reinforcement size and morphology remained relatively unknown. Via cryomilling, which involves mechanical milling in a cryogenic liquid slurry (e.g., nitrogen), and subsequent hot consolidation, novel trimodal composites reinforced with micrometric ([mu]m-), submicron (s[mu]), and nanometric (n-) B4C particles with both faceted and spherical morphologies were fabricated with varying volume fractions of coarse grain phase (0-30%). The microstructural features are investigated in depth, the strengthening mechanisms quantitatively evaluated, and the mechanisms for enhancing strength and/or ductility are discussed. The characteristics of B4C/Al interfaces, namely local chemistry and interfacial structure, were studied in detail and revealed significant differences in these characteristics as a function of particle length scale. n-B4C reinforced composites were observed to have higher strengths, without any loss in deformability, and lower elastic modulus than s[mu]-B4C and [mu]m-B4C reinforced composites due to enhanced damage tolerance and limited load bearing capacity, respectively. Fiber-like arrays of nanoparticle-rich zones containing spherical n-B4C particles embedded in an ultrafine grain Al matrix demonstrated enhanced mechanical response when compared to an equivalent metal matrix composite with a homogeneous distribution of nanoparticles.

Book Aluminum Matrix Composites Reinforced with Alumina Nanoparticles

Download or read book Aluminum Matrix Composites Reinforced with Alumina Nanoparticles written by Riccardo Casati and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-24 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the latest efforts to develop aluminum nanocomposites with enhanced damping and mechanical properties and good workability. The nanocomposites exhibited high strength, improved damping behavior and good ductility, making them suitable for use as wires. Since the production of metal matrix nanocomposites by conventional melting processes is considered extremely problematic (because of the poor wettability of the nanoparticles), different powder metallurgy routes were investigated, including high-energy ball milling and unconventional compaction methods. Special attention was paid to the structural characterization at the micro- and nanoscale, as uniform nanoparticle dispersion in metal matrix is of prime importance. The aluminum nanocomposites displayed an ultrafine microstructure reinforced with alumina nanoparticles produced in situ or added ex situ. The physical, mechanical and functional characteristics of the materials produced were evaluated using different mechanical tests and microstructure investigation techniques. The book presents and discusses the experimental results in detail, and offers suggestions for future research directions.

Book Physical Mechanical and Tribological Properties of Al6061 B4C Composites

Download or read book Physical Mechanical and Tribological Properties of Al6061 B4C Composites written by Ulhas K. Annigeri and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aluminum matrix composites are often preferred in automotive, aerospace, and ship building, owing to their enhanced properties over conventional aluminum alloys. Aluminum metal matrix composites reinforced with particulates extend improved wear resistance and mechanical properties. In this article, the test inferences of physical, mechanical, and tribological properties of Al6061 matrix reinforced with boron carbide (B 4 C) are explained. Composites were processed that contained 0 to 3 % B 4 C by weight, in steps of 1 %. The method used for manufacturing the casting is the stir casting route (liquid metallurgy). All testing was conducted according to ASTM standards. The results of density obtained from the experiments are compared with the density as calculated from the rule of mixtures. The resistance to deformation and ultimate tensile strength improved with the addition of particulate reinforcement, but not at the cost of ductility. The ductility has been stored, to some extent. The effect of reinforcement on composites has been further confirmed by a Pareto chart, an interaction plot obtained from Minitab software. The tests were conducted in randomized order. The dry sliding wear of the composites with B 4 C reinforcement displayed the greater resistance to wear in comparison with unreinforced Al6061 alloy.

Book Opportunities in Protection Materials Science and Technology for Future Army Applications

Download or read book Opportunities in Protection Materials Science and Technology for Future Army Applications written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-08-27 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Armor plays a significant role in the protection of warriors. During the course of history, the introduction of new materials and improvements in the materials already used to construct armor has led to better protection and a reduction in the weight of the armor. But even with such advances in materials, the weight of the armor required to manage threats of ever-increasing destructive capability presents a huge challenge. Opportunities in Protection Materials Science and Technology for Future Army Applications explores the current theoretical and experimental understanding of the key issues surrounding protection materials, identifies the major challenges and technical gaps for developing the future generation of lightweight protection materials, and recommends a path forward for their development. It examines multiscale shockwave energy transfer mechanisms and experimental approaches for their characterization over short timescales, as well as multiscale modeling techniques to predict mechanisms for dissipating energy. The report also considers exemplary threats and design philosophy for the three key applications of armor systems: (1) personnel protection, including body armor and helmets, (2) vehicle armor, and (3) transparent armor. Opportunities in Protection Materials Science and Technology for Future Army Applications recommends that the Department of Defense (DoD) establish a defense initiative for protection materials by design (PMD), with associated funding lines for basic and applied research. The PMD initiative should include a combination of computational, experimental, and materials testing, characterization, and processing research conducted by government, industry, and academia.
