Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sentimental Library: Comprising Books Formerly Owned by Famous Writers, Presentation Copies, Manuscripts, and Drawings He ridiculed Wordsworth unmercifully. And my heart was glad, for oh, it is a joyous thing to hear a doctor and a theatrical manager dispute about Wordsworth, especially when both have asked you, Why first editions P The collecting of books is inspired by a sentiment founded on reverence and hero-worship. It would seem to follow that the more interesting the history of a particular copy of a book, the greater the appeal to the collector and the lover of literature. If, as Byron says, a book 's a book although there 's nothing in it, surely a book is more than a book when the extra something in it takes the form of a presentation inscription by its author, or notes in the handwriting of a famous man who once owned and read it. Book Hollywood and Africa

Download or read book Hollywood and Africa written by Opio Dokotum and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2020-02-05 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hollywood and Africa - recycling the Dark Continent myth from 19082020 is a study of over a century of stereotypical Hollywood film productions about Africa. It argues that the myth of the Dark Continent continues to influence Western cultural productions about Africa as a cognitive-based system of knowledge, especially in history, literature and film. Hollywood and Africa identifies the colonial mastertext of the Dark Continent mythos by providing a historiographic genealogy and context for the terms development and consolidation. An array of literary and paraliterary film adaptation theories are employed to analyse the deep genetic strands of HollywoodAfrica film adaptations. The mutations of the Dark Continent mythos across time and space are then tracked through the classical, neoclassical and new wave HollywoodAfrica phases in order to illustrate how Hollywood productions about Africa recycle, revise, reframe, reinforce, transpose, interrogate and even critique these tropes of Darkest Africa while sustaining the colonial mastertext and rising cyberactivism against Hollywoods whitewashing of African history.

Book Isaac Leeser and the Making of American Judaism

Download or read book Isaac Leeser and the Making of American Judaism written by Lance J. Sussman and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 1996-09 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than any other person of his time, Isaac Leeser 0806-1868) envisioned the development of a major center of Jewish culture and religious activity in the United States. He single-handedly provided American Jews with many of the basic religious texts, institutions, and conceptual tools they needed to construct the cultural foundation of what would later emerge as the largest Jewish community in the history of the Jewish people. Born in Germany, Leeser arrived in the United States in 1824. At that time, the American Jewish community was still a relatively unimportant outpost of Jewish life. No sustained or coordinated effort was being made to protect and expand Jewish political rights in America. The community was small, weak, and seemingly not interested in evolving into a cohesive, dynamic center of Jewish life. Leeser settled in Philadelphia where he sought to unite American Jews and the growing immigrant community under the banner of modern Sephardic Orthodoxy. Thoroughly Americanized prior to the first period of mass Jewish immigration to the United States between 1830 and 1854, Leeser served as a bridge between the old native-born and new immigrant American Jews. Among the former, he inspired a handful to work for the revitalization of Judaism in America. To the latter, he was a spiritual leader, a champion of tradition, and a guide to life in a new land. Leeser had a decisive impact on American Judaism during a career that spanned nearly forty years. The outstanding Jewish religious leader in America prior to the Civil War, he shaped both the American Jewish community and American Judaism. He sought to professionalize the American rabbinate, introduced vernacular preaching into the North American synagogue, and produced the first English language translation of the entire Hebrew Bible. As editor and publisher of The Occident, Leeser also laid the groundwork for the now vigorous and thriving American Jewish press. Leeser's influence extended well beyond the American Jewish community An outspoken advocate of religious liberty, he defended Jewish civil rights, sought to improve Jewish-Christian relations, and was an early advocate of modern Zionism. At the international level, Leeser helped mobilize Jewish opinion during the Damascus Affair and corresponded with a number of important Jewish leaders in Great Britain and western Europe. In the first biography of Isaac Leeser, Lance Sussman makes extensive use of archival and primary sources to provide a thorough study of a man who has been largely ignored by traditional histories. Isaac Leeser and the Making of American Judaism also tells an important part of the story of Judaism's response to the challenge of political freedom and social acceptance in a new, modern society Judaism itself was transformed as it came to terms with America, and the key figure in this process was Isaac Leeser.

Book Instruction in the Mosaic Religion Classic Reprint

Download or read book Instruction in the Mosaic Religion Classic Reprint written by J. Johlson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Instruction in the Mosaic Religion IN an age, when science of every kind is pursued with avidity, no astonishment can be manifested at the attempt of an Israelite to give his brethren a clear knowledge of the religion which they have inherited from their ancestors; Since, if it is of any importance Whatever to any portion of the human family to profess a certain creed, it is also highly necessary, that the principal features at least of this creed Should be familiar to all who profess the same. I claim no great literary merit on account of the present per formance for, although the labour bestowed on it has been very great, and considerable additions and alterations made (particularly to the tenth and eleventh chapters), yet, the road was already so clearly pointed out by the very learned author of the original, that I had nothing more to do, than to make as good a use of the materials, as my limited abilities and inexperience would permit. How I have succeeded, I leave others to judge and claim no par ticular indulgence, because it is my first literary performance of any note. But at the same time I beg leave to state, that I shall not hold myself responsible for any difference of Opinion, which may happen to exist between myself and any of my readers; and I hope, that this difference Will not, as in justice it should not, deprive me of as candid and impartial a judgment, as though we agreed upon every point. If I have not obtained the good opinion of the public, I have endeavoured to deserve it. For in the first place, Ihave spared no application to render the work, though small in size, as perfect as I could possibly make it; _and next, I flatter myself, that the typographical execution is of such general correctness as will strike every one as worthy of commendation. I can safely aver, that the Hebrew, which is distributed throughout these pages, will be found to be as free from errors as can well be expected, for every passage has been carefully revised with the best editions of the Bible. That some small errors may nevertheless have escaped both in the English and Hebrew, despite of the care bestowed upon both, I cannot doubt but no one can demand perfection, when perfection is beyond the reachof man, and literary labours must share the fate ofevery other human undertaking.
