Book Strong And Electroweak Matter 98

Download or read book Strong And Electroweak Matter 98 written by Ambjorn Jan and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-07-22 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Already in 1997, the topics included in this meeting had been enlarged to include all different phases and phase transitions relevant on laboratory scales or in cosmology. The '98 meeting followed this trend, and there was a balanced combination of the physics associated with both strong and electroweak interactions (and beyond). The main motivation continues to be the understanding of the standard model in “extreme” situations, particularly relevant on the cosmological scale. Most contributions were in one way or another concerned with the finite-temperature aspects of strong and electroweak interactions, and, as in the previous meeting, one persistent theme was the present understanding of baryon-number asymmetry: how it can be created, and how it can be maintained beyond the earliest stages of the Universe. The recent progress in describing the real-time and nonequilibrium dynamics of the non-Abelian gauge was covered in a number of the main talks, as well as in several shorter contributions and posters. The conference presented examples of impressive analytical progress and equally impressive results from numerical simulations: the two techniques continue to fruitfully complement each other. One completely new theme at this conference was the recent suggestion that finite-density QCD may contain new and interesting condensed phases in the neighborhood of the conventional critical density separating quark matter from hadronic matter. All of these developments, and many more, are reflected in this book.

Book Information Theory and Artificial Intelligence to Manage Uncertainty in Hydrodynamic and Hydrological Models

Download or read book Information Theory and Artificial Intelligence to Manage Uncertainty in Hydrodynamic and Hydrological Models written by Abebe Andualem Jemberie and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2004-05-15 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complementary nature of physically-based and data-driven models in their demand for physical insight and historical data, leads to the notion that the predictions of a physically-based model can be improved and the associated uncertainty can be systematically reduced through the conjunctive use of a data-driven model of the residuals. The objective of this thesis is to minimise the inevitable mismatch between physically-based models and the actual processes as described by the mismatch between predictions and observations. Principles based on information theory are used to detect the presence and nature of residual information in model errors that might help to develop a data-driven model of the residuals by treating the gap between the process and its (physically-based) model as a separate process. The complementary modelling approach is applied to various hydrodynamic and hydrological models to forecast the expected errors and accuracy, using neural network and fuzzy rule-based models. Complementary modelling offers the opportunity of incorporating processes and data that are not considered by the model, without affecting the routine operation of physically-based models. The possibility that information may be obtained which will help to improve the physically-based model is also demonstrated.

Book Cosmology and Particle Physics

Download or read book Cosmology and Particle Physics written by Ruth Durrer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-04-06 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At this conference, both particle physicists and cosmologists presented exciting new results, from experiments that determine with unprecedented accuracy whether the universe is spatially flat, whether it is accelerating and what the nature of the dark matter could be, to more speculative ideas about its origin, based on theories of particle physics which might be confirmed or disproved in the not too distant future. This conference convinced everyone that we are truly living in the Golden Age of Cosmology.

Book Profits and Morality

Download or read book Profits and Morality written by Robin Cowan and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are profits morally justifiable? While neoclassical economists have traditionally endorsed the pursuit of profits, many moral philosophers have challenged profit making on a variety of ethical grounds. Through the lenses of economics, philosophy, and law, these six essays explore the morality of profits from libertarian, utilitarian, and consequentialist perspectives. Presenting arguments for and against the morality of profit making, the contributors examine the nature of profits and which ethical theories can support them. Two essays address how profits are made: one explores entrepreneurship as a legitimate source of profit, while another argues that recent advances in welfare economics weaken the case for the morality of profits. The other chapters focus on ethical theory, covering the right to profits from economic rent; the morality of how profits are used—those directed toward library or university endowments, for example, are considered morally acceptable—and whether or not profits are deserved.

Book Transfer of Learning from a Modern Multidisciplinary Perspective

Download or read book Transfer of Learning from a Modern Multidisciplinary Perspective written by Jose P. Mestre and published by IAP. This book was released on 2006-07-01 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters contained in the book present a new and exciting set of conceptual tools that will not only allow us to think about transfer in more productive ways, but will also enable the development of educational and measurement tools that will greatly facilitate our ability to educate the children in our schools. This volume is eclectic in bringing together researchers from psychology and science education (especially physics)—who would not normally present their ideas under the same forum—to share their views and perspectives on transfer. What we believe has emerged is a fresh look at transfer issues from a multidisciplinary perspective.
