Book excerpt: Electrifying chronicle of top-secret bomber missions with the famous Flying Tigers This book records the World War II experiences of Capt. Elmer E. Haynes, who flew low-altitude night radar strikes against Japanese shipping in the South China Sea and daylight raids against various enemy land-based installations in eastern and central China. Haynes flew secretly developed B-24 Liberator bombers that were equipped with radar that had been integrated with the Norden Bombsight for night missions. These B-24s operated with the 14th Air Force--General Chennault's Flying Tigers. The bombing attacks were so accurate and successful that, in a little over a year, Haynes and his fellow pilots sank approximately a million tons of Japanese shipping.

Book B 24 Liberator vs Ki 43 Oscar

Download or read book B 24 Liberator vs Ki 43 Oscar written by Edward M. Young and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04-20 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In reviewing reports of air combat from Spain, China and the early stages of the war in Europe, the US Army Air Corps called for heavier armor and armament for its bomber fleet, including the addition of a tail turret. While Japan tried to counter with their own heavy fighters, their inability to produce them in any number meant that they were forced to face the bomber threat with the nimble, but under–armed Ki-43 “Oscar”. While severely outgunned, the Japanese learned to use their greater maneuverability to exploit the small weakness in bomber defenses. This book tells the story of the clash in the skies over the Pacific, as the Japanese fought desperately against the coming tide of the American bomber offensive.

Book B 24 Liberator Units of the CBI

Download or read book B 24 Liberator Units of the CBI written by Edward M. Young and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11-20 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The B-24 Liberator was the mainstay of the US Army Air Force's strategic bombing effort in the China-Burma-India (CBI) Theatre from 1942 until the end of the war in 1945. With longer range and a greater load-carrying capacity than the B-17, the B-24 was well-suited to the demands of the CBI. The CBI's two air forces, the Tenth in India and the Fourteenth in China, each had one heavy bomb group equipped with Liberators. These two groups, the 7th and the 308th, carried the war to the Japanese across China and South East Asia, flying over some of the most difficult terrain in the world. The 308th had the added burden of having to carry its own fuel and bombs over the Himalayan 'Hump' from India to China in support of its missions. Despite the hardships and extreme distances from sources of supply, both units compiled a notable record, each winning two Distinguished Unit Citations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Near the end of World War II, the United States decided to launch a strategic bombing of Japan with both conventional and atomic bombs, using the new B-29 Superfortress. The first strikes were to be carried out from nine airfields to be quickly built around the southwestern city of Chengdu in Sichuan Province. But the real story is how these airfields were built. By mobilizing 500,000 Chinese peasants and workers in three months under trying winter conditions, this incredible feat is largely unknown to the world, even in China. From December 1943, when the order was given to build the airfields, to April 1944 when the first B-29s arrived, this book tells the story of the amazing work done for the B-29s to begin their missions to bomb Japanese targets in Southeast Asia, Japanese-occupied Taiwan, and the home islands of Japan. After the capture of the Mariana Islands by the U.S., new bases for B-29s were constructed there and the work in Chengdu was effectively completed. With month-by-month detailed information of the 49 missions carried out, richly illustrated with historic photographs, and many original documents included, this book is a chronological record of the twelve-month operations of the Chinese people's cooperation with the U.S. 20th Army Air Force to defeat Japan aggression and end World War II.

The book first describes the authors’ concept and formulation models, followed by a description and analysis of the applied data. As shipping companies fiercely compete in an effort to achieve greater efficiency and impact infrastructure policy and plan for the entire supply chain, they need tactics that drive quality transportation policy and new ways to model and simulate worldwide cargo movements, all while estimating demand and capacity of systems. This book provides quantitative tools for modeling, analysis, and simulation of worldwide, inter-modal cargo movement – helping forecast the impacts of logistics and related policies in each region of the world. It covers useful applications for every region of the world, allowing policymakers to tailor results for their own specific uses. Delivers sophisticated quantitative tools for modeling simulations, providing powerful analysis of global intermodal cargo movements Features examples of tools applied to logistical policy situations in every region of the world Serves as a bridge between theory and practice in the field of freight transportation research Provides detailed, data-supported case studies and real-world examples for transportation modelers, planners and policymakers

Book Nightstalkers

Download or read book Nightstalkers written by Richard Phillip Lawless and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2023-02-23 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Never-before-told story of the 868th Bomb Squadron, the Nightstalkers, who paired cutting-edge technology with daring—launching single-aircraft night-time missions stalking the Japanese in the Pacific. In August 1943, a highly classified US Army Air Force unit, code-named the “Wright Project,” departed Langley Field for Guadalcanal in the South Pacific to join the fight against the Empire of Japan. Operating independently, under sealed orders drafted at the highest levels of Army Air Force, the Wright Project was unique, both in terms of the war-fighting capabilities provided by classified systems the ten B-24 Liberators of this small group of airmen brought to the war, and in the success these “crash-built” technologies allowed. The Wright airmen would fly only at night, usually as lone hunters of enemy ships. In so doing they would pave the way for the United States to enter and dominate a new dimension of war in the air for generations to come. This is their story, from humble beginnings at MIT’s Radiation Lab and hunting U-boats off America’s eastern shore, through to the campaigns of the war in the Pacific in their two-year march toward Tokyo. The Wright Project would prove itself to be a combat leader many times over and an outstanding technology innovator, evolving to become the 868th Bomb Squadron. Along the way the unit would be embraced by unique personalities and the dynamic leadership, from Army Air Force General Hap Arnold through combat commanders who flew the missions. In this account, the reader will meet radar warfare pioneers and squadron leaders who were never satisfied that they had pushed the men, the aircraft, and the technologies to the full limit of their possibilities. Comprehensive and highly personal, this story can now be revealed for the very first time, based on official sources, and interviews with the young men who flew into the night.
