Book excerpt: The Boeing B-17, which has come to epitomise the American war effort in Europe, took the fight to Germans from the late summer of 1942 through to VE-Day. Its primary operator in Western Europe was the 'Mighty Eighth', who controlled 27 bomb groups for much of the war. This second of two volumes covers the 14 Bomb Groups of the Third Air Division. First hand accounts, period photography, profile artworks and nose art scrap views bring to life aircraft from each of the groups within the Third Air Division.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the Fifteenth Air Force was dismissed as 'minor leaguers' by the Eighth Air Force, strategic bombers from this outfit had done a 'major league' job on Axis targets in southern Europe following its formation in Italy in November 1943. And the heavy bombers employed by the Fifteenth were of course the venerable B-17 and B-24. At its peak strength, the Fifteenth's B-17 force comprised six groups of four squadrons each, all controlled by the 5th Bomb Wing. Having been a part of the Fifteenth Air Force in 1944, author Bill Hess has long been waiting to write a definitive account on 'his air force'.

Book B 24 Liberator Units of the Eighth Air Force

Download or read book B 24 Liberator Units of the Eighth Air Force written by Robert F Dorr and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-12-20 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The B-24 Liberator was built in greater numbers than any other US warplane, yet its combat crews live, even today, in the shadow of the less plentiful, but better-known, B-17. Accounts of the 'Mighty Eighth' in Europe, and indeed many of the books and films that emerged from the greatest air campaign in history, often overlook the B-24, even though it was in action for as long as the Flying Fortress, and participated in just as many perilous daylight bombing missions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ultimate piston-engined heavy bomber of World War 2, the first production B-29s were delivered to the 58th Very Heavy Bomb Wing in the autumn of 1943. By the spring of 1944 the Superfortress was bombing targets in the Pacific, and by war's end the aircraft had played as great a part as any weapon in ending the conflict with the Japanese. Indeed, the final dropping of two atomic bombs from the B-29 convinced the Japanese to sue for peace. This book traces the wartime career of the B-29, as the aircraft went from strength to strength in the Pacific Theatre.

Book B 17 Flying Fortress Restoration

Download or read book B 17 Flying Fortress Restoration written by Jerome J. McLaughlin and published by Dudley Court Press, LLC. This book was released on 2016-07-13 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The arrival of the WWII B-17 bomber at the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force in January of 2009 ini-tiated a great adventure for a group of warbird lovers from the nearby commu-nities as they united to restore that B-17. The dream of the volunteers was to honor the WWII veterans of the Eighth Air Force – some of whom were literally their fathers – by restoring the B-17 to its original pristine condition. The group was challenged by the fact that the airplane had been in storage for more than two decades following a long working life, and was far from the gleaming symbol of power that it had been in 1945. This book is the story of the six year effort by a team of volunteers to over-come the challenges they faced and to fulfill their dream to create a lasting sym-bol to honor their fathers and grandfa-thers and all of the veterans who served in the Mighty Eighth during WWII.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New revised edition, updated and expanded. The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, which was used by the US Air Force for the duration of World War II, is perhaps the most famous device used by the Americans in the war. The B-17 was designed in 1934 as a response to a request made in May by the US Air Corps for a unit that had to meet these requirements: multi-engine, capable of carrying at least 2,000 pounds (907 kg) of bombs on a minimum distance of 1,020 miles (1,640 km) at a speed of 200 miles/h (320 km/h) and beyond. Although Boeing was working drawings of another, more heavy bomber, the model 294 or XB 15, the design and implementation of new aircraft proceeded rapidly and the prototype model 299, as it was called by Boeing, rose for the first time in flight in July 1935. This prototype is sometimes called, erroneously, XB-17. Power was provided by four radial engines Pratt & Whitney R-1690 Hornet that erogavano 750 HP each; The defensive armament consisted of five machine guns single 0.30 inch (7.62 mm), while the offensive load could reach 4,800 pounds (2,177 kg). Although the prototype was destroyed in an accident, his performance was so encouraging that the USAAC ordered the construction of 14 YB-17, later renamed Y1B-17. The first of this group was delivered in December 1936 and was equipped with radial engines Wright GR 1820 of 930 HP. The first 13 aircraft of this group were all the same, while the fourteenth was the only Y1B-17A, equipped with turbo-superchargers for engines, which allowed to reach a maximum speed of 311 miles/h (500 km/h) and a maximum altitude of operation of 30,000 feet (9,144 m); these variants were then incorporated into all models B-17 that followed.

This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The 3rd Air Division: Elveden Hall was the Headquarters of this division of the 8th US Army Air Force. Broadly speaking it flew B17 Flying Fortresses out of Suffolk, but included some bases in Norfolk. Some units had short periods flying B24 Liberators. The famous 'Bloody Hundredth', based at Thorpe Abbotts was typical of the units within the 3rd Air Division. From June 1943 to January 1944 it concentrated its efforts against airfields, submarine facilities and aircraft industries in France and Germany. January through May 1944, the Group bombed enemy airfields, industries, marshalling yards, V-1 missile sites, including participation in the Allied campaign against enemy aircraft factories during Big Week, February 20-25, 1944. Participated in the first daylight raid against Berlin (March 4, 1944) and completed a series of attacks against Berlin March 6, 8, 1944 for which the 100th Bomb Group was awarded a second Presidential Unit Citation. In the summer of 1944 oil installations became the major target. In October through December 1944, the Century Bombers attacked transportation, oil refineries and ground defenses in the drive against the Siegfried Line. They were involved in the December 24, 1944 mission to attack communication centers and airfields in the Ardennes sector during the Battle of the Bulge. January to April 1945, the Group concentrated on marshalling yards, bridges, factories, docks, oil refineries and ground support. Airfields included are Bury St Edmunds, Debach, Deopham Green Eye, Framlington, Great Ashfield, Horham, Knettishall, Lavenham, Mendlesham, Rattlesden, Snetterton Heath, Sudbury and Thorpe Abbots, which has one of the finest aviation museums in England. This book looks at the history and personalities associated with each base, what remains today and explores the favourite local wartime haunts where aircrew and ground crew would have sought well-deserved entertainment and relaxation. Other museums and places that are relevant are described and general directions on how to get them included"--Publisher's website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The B-24 was heavily utilised in the North African and Mediterranean theatres by the USAAF's Fifteenth Air Force, with operations over the Ploesti oilfields in Rumania being some of the most famous missions undertaken by the big American 'heavy' in World War 2. The stirling work of the Fifteenth Air Force is often overshadowed by the glamorous 'Mighty Eighth', yet the men flying the B-24 fought ceaselessly right through to VE Day. This is the third of five titles planned to chart the operational history of the Consolidated heavy bomber, and is the first single volume to exclusively cover the Fifteenth Air Force's B-24 units.

Through a broad range of photos gathered from around the world, this book, the first of a two-volume series, chronicles the design, development, and wartime use of the early models of the Flying Fortress, from the ill-fated experimental model 299 through the B-17D, including the famous "Swoose." A second volume will continue the B-17 story with the large-tail later models, B-17E through B-17H. The story of these iconic WWII aircraft is told through carefully researched photos, many of which have never before been published, and which are reproduced in remarkable clarity. The US Eighth Air Force-known as the “Mighty Eighth”-was a combat air force activated in Georgia, USA on January 28, 1942. Among the major operations it participated in were “Big Week” in February 1944; the D-Day landings in June 1944; and the defeat of the Luftwaffe and destruction of German industry. Eighth Air Force was the largest of the deployed combat Army Air Forces in numbers of personnel, aircraft, and equipment. At peak strength, Eighth Air Force had 40 heavy bomber groups, 15 fighter groups, and four specialized support groups. This work provides a superbly illustrated and fully comprehensive exploration of the Mighty Eighth's bomber and fighter planes, its incredibly brave pilots and crew, and its daring and dramatic operations. It also explores the careers of key personalities associated with the Mighty Eighth, such as Earle Partridge, James Doolittle, and William Kepner.
