Book Matador Negro Azucar II

Download or read book Matador Negro Azucar II written by Odie Hawkins and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-01-05 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I lit my fire, I greased my skillet with virgin pressed olive oil, and I cooked.” That’s one of the statements Chester L. Simmons, Jr. made about his career as a Novillero/Matador in the art of bullfighting. It’s really weird that it should be called bullfighting. No reasonable person would ever think of fighting a bull who has been bred to fight. Would any reasonable person think of fighting a pit bull who was bred to fight? But I have to ask, are bullfighters reasonable people?

The Story of Sugar is a fictional novel that offers a gripping testimony to the unmasked brutality and decay of daily life on a contemporary Caribbean sugarcane plantation, Esperanza Dulce. Azucar, the intelligent and beautiful young girl, is the central character, but the omnipresent protagonist is her namesake, "azucar" -- sugar itself. Azucar?s story is a complex and hauntingly atmospheric tale of sustained intrigue, murder, revenge, forbidden love, and an unnerving journey into the mystical spirit world of Caribbean ritual. Even after Azucar?s fiercely determined grandmother arranges for her to emigrate to Canada -- with a most unlikely couple-- where she is dramatically transformed, she is still not completely free from the hypnotic pull of the distant Caribbean plantation. Azucar meets and falls in love with Lucien, whose own mysterious history shockingly brings them both back to Esperanza Dulce to confront the terrifying ghosts of an unknowingly shared past.

Download or read book Sugar and Railroads written by Oscar Zanetti and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2017-10-06 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though Cuba was among the first countries in the world to utilize rail transport, the history of its railroads has been little studied. This English translation of the prize-winning Caminos para el azucar traces the story of railroads in Cuba from their introduction in the nineteenth century through the 1959 Revolution. More broadly, the book uses the development of the Cuban rail transport system to provide a fascinating perspective on Cuban history, particularly the story of its predominant agro-industry, sugar. While railroads facilitated the sugar industry's rapid growth after 1837, the authors argue, sugar interests determined where railroads would be built and who would benefit from them. Zanetti and Garcia explore the implications of this symbiotic relationship for the technological development of the railroads, the economic evolution of Cuba, and the lives of the railroad workers. As this work shows, the economic benefits that accompanied the rise of railroads in Europe and the United States were not repeated in Cuba. Sugar and Railroads provides a poignant demonstration of the fact that technological progress alone is far from sufficient for development.
