Download or read book Azores written by Roman Martin and published by Bergverlag Rother GmbH. This book was released on 2020-03-06 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone has heard about the Azores high – here is its home. A 3½ hour flight from London, the nine islands of the Azores – Santa Maria, São Miguel, Pico, Faial, São Jorge, Terceira, Graciosa, Flores and Corvo – are situated in the middle of the Atlantic. Still free from mass tourism, the archipelago, belonging to Portugal, is a Mecca for nature-lovers and individualists. The Azorean landscape is the very picture of extremity. Enchanting forests fuse with heavenly rolling hills and deep-blue crater lakes. Extinct volcanoes tower to the heavens and countless cleft valleys have been deeply cut through the volcanic stratum. The areas lying directly on the coast, often difficult to reach, are exceptionally fertile and under intense cultivation. From a multitude of scenic viewpoints, one can gather breath-taking views of volcanic craters, lakes, hilly countryside or the bizarre coastline. Additional attractions are fumaroles and hot springs as well as thermal bathing pools. Because of these things, the spectrum of possible walks range from pleasant strolls through meadows and forests or along the coast all the way to challenging mountain hikes on Pico, Portugal's highest peak. In years gone by, author Roman Martin has toured the Azores time and again. In this Rother Walking Guide, he offers a choice of 86 routes making up a comprehensive cross-section for the walks available on each of the individual islands. Every route is provided with comprehensive GPS data, ready for download. Listing the most important features and providing detailed route descriptions, excerpts of maps with the routes marked in, height profiles as well as many tips, the guide provides all of the information necessary for a successful walking holiday on the Azores.

Book Volcanic Geology of S o Miguel Island Azores Archipelago

Download or read book Volcanic Geology of S o Miguel Island Azores Archipelago written by J.L. Gaspar and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2015-10-12 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Azores archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean is composed of nine volcanic islands and São Miguel is the largest and most volcanically active. During the past 5000 years several eruptions have taken place on the three active central volcanoes – Sete Cidades, Fogo and Furnas – and in the basaltic fissure systems of Picos and Congro. There is evidence that Furnas was in eruption when the first settlers arrived some time between 1439 and 1443. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries there were two explosive sub-Plinian eruptions, Fogo in 1563 and Furnas in 1630. The last eruption on land occurred in the Picos Fissural Volcanic System in 1652, involving the extrusion of lava domes. In 22 chapters, this volume considers the volcanic geology of the island under the headings of geological setting, volcanic history, geological hazards and risk assessment, volcano monitoring and natural resources.

Book Political Alternation in the Azores Madeira and the Canary Islands

Download or read book Political Alternation in the Azores Madeira and the Canary Islands written by Teresa Ruel and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-30 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “In this innovative study, Dr Ruel explores why political alternation—a bedrock of democratic functioning—has been largely absent in three under-studied regions in Portugal and Spain. Focusing on Madeira, the Azores and the Canary Islands, this book explains how party competition, intra-party democracy and regional economic performance have contributed to political party stasis since the return of democracy in the mid-1970s.” —Paul M. Heywood, Sir Francis Hill Professor of European Politics seconded 0.5 FTE to Global Integrity, Washington DC (2018-21), Faculty of Social Science, University of Nottingham, UK This book is about political alternation. It’s about parties and politicians. It’s about power and resources employed to secure longevity in power over time at Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands. This book explores the phenomenon of political alternation through an in-depth contextual understanding of the path of regional historical legacies at democratization and decentralization processes started in the 1970s; the institutional architectures and the scope of regional authority endowed in those regions; the specific dynamics of regional politics; and the constellation of political parties and actors and the regional elections results, as well as contextual factors that might explain why some political parties have better performances than other at regional elections. Throughout comparative lessons Ruel seeks to highlight the range of factors that affect regional electoral dynamics and outcomes and to develop a comprehensive understanding of the drivers of long-standing incumbency (Azores and Canary Islands) or the absence of political alternation (Madeira) within regional democracies.
