Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June of 2016, Carol's, safe predictable life was uprooted. The red Toyota BOXRRAV loaded with a couple of suitcases, a few plants, some bonsai tools, and her white boxer Spud, headed east toward the Land of Enchantment. In 2006, she began documenting the journey of finding her Nana and the subsequent cleanup of the cemetery at the State Mental Hospital in Las Vegas, New Mexico. Maybe, this crazy God-adventure was initiated then. If it was, she certainly didn't feel it. In fact, it only served to remind her of the sadness that she had kept hidden in the recesses of her mind. She loved the vast expanses of open landscape, the blue skies with white clouds unlike anywhere else she had ever been. Cactus, pinion trees, rugged mountain ranges, and glorious sunrises and sunsets had been blotted out by memories of family struggles and loss. But as Nana slowly made her way back home, so did Carol. She was being called not out of the desert but back to the desert. In probably the most unlikely twist since deliberately choosing God as her partner, he was making straight the path to return home, shepherding her soul back to New Mexico. This is a tale of second chances-of following one's heart. It is a story of paradox and contradiction, of mountain peaks and valley floors, of sadness and rejoicing. But most of all, it is the story of a soul set free.

Attractive, well-liked, highly esteemed in her field, Abby has always stood up determinately to the buffets of fate. But now she finds herself runningrunning both from the past with its personal tragedies and from the disease that threatens her future with failing kidneys and impending dialysis. She runs as the deer from the mountain lion or the elk from the huntera blind reaction triggered by the instinct for survival. However, a person can run just so long and Flagstaff, Arizona, seems to Abby like as good a place as any to lite for the summer. An intriguing man and a darling corgi dog add to the appeal. A great climate, breathtaking scenery, and hardly the crime capital of northern Arizona, as Abby reassures her sister. Or is it? A stolen classic Alfa Romeo, ominous doings in the forest, eco-warriors on the loose, and ultimately the deathor is it the murder?of a close friend suggest otherwise. From the moment of diagnosis Abby has known that she would have to fight to maintain her sense of self in the face of the major life-changes demanded by her disease, but will she also have to fight for life itself? Will she live or die in Arizona?

The Book of Phoenix is a unique work of magical futurism. A prequel to the highly acclaimed, World Fantasy Award-winning novel, Who Fears Death, it features the rise of another of Nnedi Okorafor’s powerful, memorable, superhuman women. Phoenix was grown and raised among other genetic experiments in New York’s Tower 7. She is an “accelerated woman”—only two years old but with the body and mind of an adult, Phoenix’s abilities far exceed those of a normal human. Still innocent and inexperienced in the ways of the world, she is content living in her room speed reading e-books, running on her treadmill, and basking in the love of Saeed, another biologically altered human of Tower 7. Then one evening, Saeed witnesses something so terrible that he takes his own life. Devastated by his death and Tower 7’s refusal to answer her questions, Phoenix finally begins to realize that her home is really her prison, and she becomes desperate to escape. But Phoenix’s escape, and her destruction of Tower 7, is just the beginning of her story. Before her story ends, Phoenix will travel from the United States to Africa and back, changing the entire course of humanity’s future.

Book excerpt: In this remarkable one-year journal, skilled horsewoman and adventurer Laura Chester brings us into her world, where we deeply connect with the earth and its seasons, with beauty and sometimes danger. While riding in places as far-reaching as Mexico, Australia, and India, Chester is always grateful to come home to the comforts of her familiar horse. As they cover the borderland of Arizona and the hills of Massachusetts, we get to know Barranca as intimate companion, mediator between soul and nature, whether entering the wilds of Cochise Stronghold or picking Berkshire apples from the saddle. Carried along on waves of memory, released by the gaits of her smooth-moving fox trotter, this literary memoir takes us on a personal exploration as well—where family relationships are fractured by anger, jealousy, illness, and death. With the help of her big-hearted animal, Chester is able to retrieve the past and find forgiveness. For as she says—"Riding Barranca puts me in the moment, which is where I want to live."
