Book The Tragedie of Romeo and Juliet

Download or read book The Tragedie of Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This annotated edition of The Tragedie of Romeo and Juliet provides two valuable textual services to its readers. It restores the language of Shakespeare to that of the First Folio of 1623, with its idiosyncratic but illuminating spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. It also provides footnotes and annotations that are candid and plainspoken in their accounting of Shakespeare's themes, especially his frequent if oft-overlooked and underappreciated bawdy puns and allusions. An extensive introduction is included, as are appendices detailing typographical errors, stage directions, emended lineations and character tags from the First Folio.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can programs and organizations ensure they are adhering to core principles--and assess whether doing so is yielding desired results? From evaluation pioneer Michael Quinn Patton, this book introduces the principles-focused evaluation (P-FE) approach and demonstrates its relevance and application in a range of settings. Patton explains why principles matter for program development and evaluation and how they can serve as a rudder to navigate the uncertainties, turbulence, and emergent challenges of complex dynamic environments. In-depth exemplars illustrate how the unique GUIDE framework is used to determine whether principles provide meaningful guidance (G) and are useful (U), inspiring (I), developmentally adaptable (D), and evaluable (E). User-friendly features include rubrics, a P-FE checklist, firsthand reflections and examples from experienced P-FE practitioners, sidebars and summary tables, and end-of-chapter application exercises. ÿ

Book The Money Game in Old New York

Download or read book The Money Game in Old New York written by Clifford Browder and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-11-21 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I got to be a millionaire afore I know'd it hardly," remarked the Wall Street financier Daniel Drew (1797-1879). An uneducated farm boy from Putnam County, New York, he became in turn a successful cattle drover, a circus clown, tavern keeper, a shrewd Hudson River steamboat operator, and an unscrupulous speculator. As the colorful "Uncle Daniel" of Wall Street-his whiskered face seamed with wrinkles and twinkling with steel-gray eyes—time and again he disrupted the financial markets with manipulations whereby he either won or lost millions of dollars. Having "got religion" upon hearing a scary hell-fire sermon at the age of fourteen, Drew was also a fervent Methodist. Rumors of his financial operations—epic struggles that pitted him against Cornelius Vanderbilt, Jay Gould, and Jim Fisk, and that subjected him to threats of arrest and even kidnapping, and on one occasion to a most undignified flight from the state-baffled and disturbed the Methodists, who admittedly had little grasp of Wall Street but knew firsthand Brother Drew's tearful repentance at prayer meetings and his generosity in founding churches and seminaries. With its dual commitment to religion and rascality, Drew's career is a rich study in contradictions, an exciting chronicle of high drama and low comedy capped by bankruptcy. To understand Drew in his complexity, the author argues, is to get a grip on the heady and exploitative age that produced him—the yesterday of "smartness" and "go ahead" that helped engender the America of today. Based on primary sources, this is the first full-fledged biography of Drew, who hitherto has been known chiefly through a fictionalized and fraudulent account of 1910.

Book excerpt: Medieval England, Scotland, and Normandy set the stage for the epic historical romance series from the “amazingly talented author who has few rivals” (RT Book Reviews). These five historical romances from Anita Mills sweep readers back in time, to places like eleventh-century Normandy, where the danger of loving the wrong man can be perilous, and where forbidden love flourishes in the darkened corners of castles. Defiant women and heroic men roam the gorgeous countryside in this multigenerational saga—perfect escapist romance for readers who take their stolen kisses with a hint of danger. “Mills is a sprightly storyteller, providing atmosphere and action aplenty, and cannily complicating her characters’ inner landscapes.” —Publishers Weekly

Arabella of Byrum’s stunning beauty is a blessing and a curse. It drew the brutal Elias of Woolford to make an irresistible offer for her hand in marriage, and it fueled the jealous rage that made Elias break that bond—leaving Arabella with an infant Elias refuses to acknowledge as his, and a shattered reputation. Despite the slanderous rumors about Arabella, William of Dunashie wants her when no other lord will. In his arms, Arabella discovers what the true power of love is, and can only hope that power will keep her safe as she searches a shadowy labyrinth of evil intrigue for the way to clear her name.
