Book excerpt: Generations is an intricate tale, simply told by a master of fiction about a community of Tamil speakers who live on the borders of modern-day Kerala. Set in the 1940s, it is a novel of generational change and conflict, and how the boy Diravi grows up to take charge of his family, which embodies a distinct culture. Diravi’s sister, Nagu’s marriage to Perumal is wrecked when the latter, enraged at his own failings rejects his young wife. Unacceptable in her own family, Nagu continues to endure Perumal’s cruelty till her brother, Diravi decides on an alternative course of action slashing through outdated social customs that discourage any constructive solutions. Amidst the background of language, myth, and ethnic consciousness, we are offered a sensitively drawn profile of the passing of a traditional way of life into modernity and the nostalgia that comes with change.

Book excerpt: Victor Verghese grows up without his mother's love, and spends the most part of his early life subconsciously living the lack in his dealings with the world. There is this irreparable void in his psyche that he simply must fill, and when he finds a girl-Sonal Dutta-who can do just that, he is left with an ideal he must chase. Infused with a new pulsating drive, he lands up in the preeminent management institute in the country only to end up in a bout of failed love and general disillusionment. Riding a wave of mystery and a healthy dose of twisted oriental exotica he comes back endowed with a life altering gift and leads to opportunities too nebulous to comprehend. As he pursues the leads on the back of his guts sharpened to survive without plans and certainties, he chances upon money that would give him a head start, a friend-Sonny Samuel-who would alter his life for the better, and a lover-Swati Mittal-who'd take him to great heights all the while threatening to steal him away from his greatest love. In his quest to make good on the aspirations he had harbored since he was a young upstart chasing the queen of his dreams, his life is pulled in dangerous directions, and he suddenly stands on the brink of material and spiritual oblivion. If he makes good on the challenge posed by the most perfidious challenger, he along with his friends, stand to wrest control of a trove of clandestine riches and a peek into Bangalore's underworld, and much more, beyond.

Book Secularism in the Postcolonial Indian Novel

Download or read book Secularism in the Postcolonial Indian Novel written by Neelam Srivastava and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the connections between a secular Indian nation and fiction in English by a number of postcolonial Indian writers of the 1980s and 90s. Examining writers such as Vikram Seth, Salman Rushdie, Amitav Ghosh, Shashi Tharoor, and Rohinton Mistry, with particularly close readings of Midnight‘s Children, A Suitable Boy, The Shadow Lines and The Satanic Verses, Neelam Srivastava investigates different aspects of postcolonial identity within the secular framework of the Anglophone novel. The book traces the breakdown of the Nehruvian secular consensus between 1975 and 2005 through these narratives of postcolonial India. In particular, it examines how these writers use the novel form to re-write colonial and nationalist versions of Indian history, and how they radically reinvent English as a secular language for narrating India. Ultimately, it delineates a common conceptual framework for secularism and cosmopolitanism, by arguing that Indian secularism can be seen as a located, indigenous form of a cosmopolitan identity.

Book Social Media as a Tool of Political Communication

Download or read book Social Media as a Tool of Political Communication written by Francis Arackal Thummy and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2020-02-03 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2015 in the subject Communications - Media and Politics, Politic Communications, grade: NA, , language: English, abstract: Since the US elections in 2008 the close connection between Social Media and political communication has been brought to the fore. The effective role that Social Media has been made to play once again in the 2012 US elections and its conscious or unconscious replication in the 2014 Indian elections reaffirmed its significance in contemporary political communication. Scholars have confirmed that political candidates are increasingly turning to Social Network Sites (SNS) to persuade voters and that these sites have become prominent sources of political information. Political Communication as a field of study has been about the role of communication in the political process. This paper would like to focus entirely on Social Media as a tool in the political process. Political communication has its beginnings during and between the World Wars. There are various types of political communication and political media. Among the political media the Social Media seems to be the most widely used in contemporary political process. The three main elements of political communication are: ideology, propaganda and persuasion. The deployment of Social Media in putting forth one’s or party’s ideology, propagating one’s or party’s agenda, and persuading the voter is widespread as never before. Many scholars including Walter Lippmann doubted the efficacy of media in public enlightenment that democracy requires. For, they thought that media cannot tell the truth objectively. Harold Lasswell too took note of the tendency of media propaganda to dupe and degrade the voters. His work expressed the fear of propaganda. This view was partly based on the direct effects theories of media. Similar fear about the Social Media is lurking in the minds of many today. To camouflage such fear political spin doctors might employ political Public Relations. Political spin doctors are press agents or publicists employed to promote favourable interpretations to journalists. They also weave reports of factual events into palatable stories. The case for political public relations is that it enables paternalism, pluralism, and pragmatism. But there is also a case against it in that it leads to news management and spin, corporatism in politics, and ‘enlightened self-interest’. The increasing availability of internet even in remote parts of the world has made Social Media a virtual public sphere enabling e-democracy.
