Book Non Professional Subtitling

Download or read book Non Professional Subtitling written by Yvonne Lee and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-08-21 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From fansubbing, fan-generated translation, to user-generated translation, from amateur translation to social translation, non-professional subtitling has come a long way since its humble beginning in the 1980s. The prevailing technological affordance enables and mobilises the digital generation to turn subtitling into a method of self-expression and mediation, and their activities have made translation a more social and visible activity than ever before. This volume provides a comprehensive review of the current state of play of this user-generated subtitling phenomenon. It includes projects and research focusing on various aspects of non-professional subtitling, including the communities at work, the agents at play, the production conditions and the products. The perspectives in the book explore the role played by the agents involved in the emerging subtitling networks worldwide, and their impact on the communities is also discussed, based on empirical data generated from observations on active fansubbing communities. The collection demonstrates, from various viewpoints, the ways in which non-professional subtitling connects languages, cultures and communities in a global setting.

Book excerpt: Telemachos – son of Odysseus in the classical epic The Odyssey by Homer – grew up in Ithaca in ancient Greece with his mother Penelope. Meanwhile, for twenty years, his father fought at Troy and struggled through his famous adventures. Once home, Telemachos helped his father kill the invasive suitors who pillaged the family estate and sought to force the faithful Penelope into an unwanted marriage. In the modern story, the protagonist wandered through the second half of the 20th century on a spiritual journey to search for his soul. Michael Barrent encountered his own version of the Cyclops, Lotus Eaters, Circe, Scylla and Charybdis. He survived childhood, religious indoctrination, education, the Vietnam war, drugs, spiritual gurus and communities, and various unstable sexual relationships. Finally, he exiled the demon-entity belief-system (suitors) which controlled his memory, personality, and essence. Eventually, he found his soul mate and personal calling. The book was also inspired by the fictional journey taken by Leopold Bloom through Dublin, Ireland, on June 16th, 1904. Described in Ulysses by James Joyce, Bloom met equivalent Homeric characters, accepted the affair of his estranged wife Molly, and eventually befriended Stephen Dedaelus as a substitute son.

Book Uss Hoquiam Pf 5 Hocky Maru

Download or read book Uss Hoquiam Pf 5 Hocky Maru written by Mark Douglas and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2011-06-09 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lee Harrison Stewart, seaman apprentice and seaman, USN-EV, served on the USS Hoquiam (PF-5) as a radioman during the first two years of the Korean Conflict (later labeled a war.) In this third book in his series on the USS Hoquiam PF-5, he brings the experiences of young sailor in the 1950s to life. The Hoquiam, after being recommissioned in Yokosuka, Japan, sailed in harms way off the east coast of North Korea. It participated in all the east coast landings and the Hungnam evacuation. This story begins where Road to Hungnam endedback in Yokosuka on New Years Eve, 1950, for a few weeks of pier-side overhaul, as the crew winds down from Hungnam. There is hard work preparing the ship for a new assignment to Task Force Ninety-Five off Wonsan, North Korea. Still, theres time for romance and hijinks on liberty in Yokosuka and later in Sasebo, Japan. The Hoquiams crew sees a full range of work in the next assignment periodincluding work they detest with the Service Force, firing remote-controlled target aircraft for other ships to shoot at, days spent on submarine patrol (when they doubled as targets for the North Korean or Chinese gunners in Wonsan caves), convoy escort duty, and the best assignment of allshooting at the potbellied narrow-gauge trains coming down from Mongolia. Eventually, the crew of the Hoquiam again sails for Yokosuka and prepares for yet another trip to the Korean bomb line.
