Book Axisymmetrical Creep Buckling of Clamped Shallow Spherical Shells

Download or read book Axisymmetrical Creep Buckling of Clamped Shallow Spherical Shells written by N. C. Huang and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper consider the effect of viscoelastic properties of shells on the axisymmetrical buckling is considered. For viscoelastic shells under constant uniform pressure, the average vertical deflection increases with time. When time reaches a critical value t sub cr, the rate of increase of the average vertical deflection becomes very high, which indicates the initiation of snapping of the shell at this instant. After snapping, the shell continues to deform. The object is to find the critical time t sub cr for different pressures and for shells with different geometrical parameters. The pressure on shells is considered to be applied either by pressurized air in a chamber of large volume or by an incompressible fluid. For the latter loading condition, the average deflection remains constant and the applied pressure relaxes. In this paper, the relaxation of external pressure of this type is analyzed, as well as prescribed pressure increases. (Author).

Book Nonlinear Creep Buckling Analysis of Initially Imperfect Shallow Spherical Shells

Download or read book Nonlinear Creep Buckling Analysis of Initially Imperfect Shallow Spherical Shells written by Robert Kao and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creep buckling times and creep deformations are obtained for axisymmetric shallow spherical shells with and without initial imperfections. For nonlinear creeps, both strain-hardening and time-hardening rules are employed in the analysis; results indicate that strain-hardening yields better estimates of shell life than time-hardening. Results also show that the initial imperfection plays an important role in shortening shell creep buckling times. (Author).

Book The Axisymmetric Buckling of Initially Imperfect Complete Spherical Shells

Download or read book The Axisymmetric Buckling of Initially Imperfect Complete Spherical Shells written by Tatsuzo Koga and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical investigation of the axisymmetric buckling of complete thin-walled spherical shells under uniform external pressure is undertaken to determine the effect of axisymmetric initial imperfections. In the analysis, the complete spherical shell is divided into two parts; the shallow cap in which the initial imperfection exists, and the remaining portion of the shell most of which deforms in simple contraction. The rotation of the meridian of the cap is assumed in the form of a polynomial function. Four matching conditions are enforced at the juncture of the cap and remainder. The total potential energy of the complete spherical shell is minimized in accordance with the Rayleigh-Ritz approximation method. Two types of initial imperfections are studied; one is an axisymmetric dimple, and the other is a spherical region whose radius of curvature is greater than that of the perfect spherical shell. The maximal values of the pressure parameter rho in the equilibrium state before snap-through were calculated for various values of the geometric parameter lambda, which is proportional to the angular extent of the imperfection for a given radius-to-thickness ratio, and the imperfection amplitude parameter delta, which is the ratio of the initial deviation of the shell mid-surface at the axis of rotation to the wall-thickness. The results of numerical computations show that for all values of delta the lowest buckling pressure is reached when lambda is about 4. (Author).

Book Buckling of Clamped Deep Spherical Shells

Download or read book Buckling of Clamped Deep Spherical Shells written by N. C. Huang and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper deals with the buckling of clamped elastic deep spherical shells subject to a uniformly distributed external pressure. It is assumed that the prebuckling deformation of the shell is so small that the linear shell theory can be employed in the analysis. It is also assumed that the deflection pattern of the shell is shallow and the second order terms of the deflection slopes in the expression of potential energy can thus be neglected. Series solutions of the prebuckling axisymmetrical deformation are obtained. Based on the asymmetrical bifurcation with shallow buckling modes, buckling of the shell is then studied. The buckling load is expressed as a Rayleigh quotient and in turn solved by Rayleigh-Ritz method. (Author).

Book excerpt: The feasibility of utilizing mathematical programing techniques for determining stable equilibrium states of nonlinear structural systems is explored. The physical problem chosen for evaluation of this methodology was the nonlinear behavior of a shallow spherical shell subjected to uniform pressure. The procedure found most useful was a hybrid method consisting principally of a generalized Newton-Raphson technique with intermittent application of the conjugate-gradient search technique. The variation of buckling pressure with changes in edge restraint and shell geometry is found for a uniformly loaded shell.

Book Structural Stability in Engineering Practice

Download or read book Structural Stability in Engineering Practice written by Lajos Kollar and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-09-01 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural Stability in Engineering Practice elucidates the various problems associated with attaining stability, and provides the results for practical use by the design engineer. By presenting a simple and visual description of the physical phenomena, the authors show how to determine the critical loads of various structures, such as frames, arches, building structures, trusses and sandwiches. Special emphasis is given to the post-critical behaviour - essential for assessing the safety of structures - and furthermore to the summation theories that make the solution of complicated stability problems relatively simple.

Book Static and Dynamic Buckling of Shallow Spherical Shells Subjected to Axisymmetric and Nearly Axisymmetric Step Pressure Loads Using SATANS IIA A Modified Version of SATANS II

Download or read book Static and Dynamic Buckling of Shallow Spherical Shells Subjected to Axisymmetric and Nearly Axisymmetric Step Pressure Loads Using SATANS IIA A Modified Version of SATANS II written by Michael D. Shutt and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A digital computer program for the geometrically nonlinear analysis of totally arbitrarily loaded shells of revolution (SATANS-2) was modified to more accurately account for the conditions at the pole of the shell. This program was used to determine the buckling load of shallow spherical shells of various sizes when subjected to static axisymmetric, dynamic axisymmetric, and dynamic nearly axisymmetric step-pressure loads of infinite duration. A comparison was made between the new buckling results and previous results obtained without the new pole routine. The comparison revealed a significant change in the buckling pressures, due solely to the change in the pole routine. The new static axisymmetric, dynamic axisymmetric, and even the dynamic asymmetric critical buckling pressure loads appear to be fairly reliable results for perfect, shallow shells.

Book Inelastic Buckling of Shallow Spherical Shells

Download or read book Inelastic Buckling of Shallow Spherical Shells written by Lawrence H. N. Lee and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theory and a numerical procedure are presented for the determination of the inelastic axisymmetric buckling pressure of a clamped shallow spherical shell made of work hardening materials. A modified incremental theory of plasticity on the stress-strain relationships expressed in terms of Kirchhoff stress and Green strain rates is employed. A variational principle, in Lagrangian descriptions, in conjunction with the Rayleigh-Ritz technique is used to determine the buckling pressure. A comparison of the theoretical predictions obtained numerically by digital computer with available experimental results is made. (Author).

Download or read book Buckling of Shallow Spherical Shells Under External Pressure Classic Reprint written by Edward L. Reiss and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Buckling of Shallow Spherical Shells Under External Pressure The pressure to which the shell jumps is called the final buckling load. The purpose of this paper is to determine the values of por for various shell configurations. A series of experiments have been conducted by Kaplan and Fung (1) on clamped, shallow, Spherical shells under uniform external pressure. Not only were the initial and final buckling loads determined, but measurements were made of the vertical deflections at various points of the shell for several different values of the pressure.
