Book Numbers Sets and Axioms

Download or read book Numbers Sets and Axioms written by A. G. Hamilton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1982 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the success of Logic for Mathematicians, Dr Hamilton has written a text for mathematicians and students of mathematics that contains a description and discussion of the fundamental conceptual and formal apparatus upon which modern pure mathematics relies. The author's intention is to remove some of the mystery that surrounds the foundations of mathematics. He emphasises the intuitive basis of mathematics; the basic notions are numbers and sets and they are considered both informally and formally. The role of axiom systems is part of the discussion but their limitations are pointed out. Formal set theory has its place in the book but Dr Hamilton recognises that this is a part of mathematics and not the basis on which it rests. Throughout, the abstract ideas are liberally illustrated by examples so this account should be well-suited, both specifically as a course text and, more broadly, as background reading. The reader is presumed to have some mathematical experience but no knowledge of mathematical logic is required.

Book excerpt: THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER The alternate history first contact adventure Axiom's End is an extraordinary debut from Hugo finalist and video essayist Lindsay Ellis. Truth is a human right. It’s fall 2007. A well-timed leak has revealed that the US government might have engaged in first contact. Cora Sabino is doing everything she can to avoid the whole mess, since the force driving the controversy is her whistleblower father. Even though Cora hasn’t spoken to him in years, his celebrity has caught the attention of the press, the Internet, the paparazzi, and the government—and with him in hiding, that attention is on her. She neither knows nor cares whether her father’s leaks are a hoax, and wants nothing to do with him—until she learns just how deeply entrenched her family is in the cover-up, and that an extraterrestrial presence has been on Earth for decades. Realizing the extent to which both she and the public have been lied to, she sets out to gather as much information as she can, and finds that the best way for her to uncover the truth is not as a whistleblower, but as an intermediary. The alien presence has been completely uncommunicative until she convinces one of them that she can act as their interpreter, becoming the first and only human vessel of communication. Their otherworldly connection will change everything she thought she knew about being human—and could unleash a force more sinister than she ever imagined.

  • Author : Maria Tumarkin
  • Publisher : Random House Australia
  • Release : 2021-05-04
  • ISBN : 1761043587

Download or read book Axiomatic written by Maria Tumarkin and published by Random House Australia. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories are not enough, even though they are essential. And books about history, books of psychology--the best of them take us closer, but still not close enough. Maria Tumarkin's Axiomatic is a boundary-shifting fusion of thinking, storytelling, reportage and meditation. It takes as its starting point five axioms: 'Time Heals All Wounds'; 'History Repeats Itself'; 'Those Who Forget the Past are Condemned to Repeat It'; 'Give Me a Child Before the Age of Seven and I Will Show You the Woman'; and 'You Can't Enter The Same River Twice.' These beliefs--or intuitions--about the role the past plays in our present are often evoked as if they are timeless and self-evident truths. It is precisely because they are neither, yet still we are persuaded by them, that they tell us a great deal about the forces that shape our culture and the way we live.

Book Psychological Aspects of Social Axioms

Download or read book Psychological Aspects of Social Axioms written by Kwok Leung and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-29 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans are surrounded by trillions of stimuli. Their eyes, for instance, can discriminate 7,500,000 colors. But, there is a severe limitation in the number of discriminably different stimuli that they can process at one time. George Miller argued that they can handle no more than seven, plus or minus two independent pieces of information at any given time. Thus, necessarily they must develop ways to simplify the task of processing the information that exists in their environment. They do this in many ways. One way is to select the stimuli that are most imp- tant in their lives, what are often called values. Another way is to chunk stimuli by linking them to each other, so they form bundles of stimuli that can be processed as if they are one entity. Generalized expectancies of what is linked with what are beliefs, and these beliefs are structured into bundles (see Triandis, 1972).

Book Zermelo s Axiom of Choice

Download or read book Zermelo s Axiom of Choice written by G.H. Moore and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book grew out of my interest in what is common to three disciplines: mathematics, philosophy, and history. The origins of Zermelo's Axiom of Choice, as well as the controversy that it engendered, certainly lie in that intersection. Since the time of Aristotle, mathematics has been concerned alternately with its assumptions and with the objects, such as number and space, about which those assumptions were made. In the historical context of Zermelo's Axiom, I have explored both the vagaries and the fertility of this alternating concern. Though Zermelo's research has provided the focus for this book, much of it is devoted to the problems from which his work originated and to the later developments which, directly or indirectly, he inspired. A few remarks about format are in order. In this book a publication is indicated by a date after a name; so Hilbert 1926, 178 refers to page 178 of an article written by Hilbert, published in 1926, and listed in the bibliography.

Book excerpt: Acclaim for Armey's Axioms "As I read Armey’s Axioms, my mind immediately went to the man from Springfield, Abraham Lincoln, who cloaked brilliant wisdom with grace and good humor that had its roots in the heartland of America. Without question, Dick Armey is one of the most brilliant and principled men ever to serve in the leadership of the United States House of Representatives. His axioms are a delightful read for anyone seeking to understand the faith, the patriotism, and the integrity that has made America great." –Dr. M. G. "Pat" Robertson "In Armey’s Axioms, Dick Armey gives us more than his great sense of humor and Texas-size common sense. With a creative and personal touch, it is the best advice I’ve seen for those who want to make it in Washington, and even better for those who want to make it in life." –Bob Dole "We Americans like to cut to the chase when it comes to difficult issues. In Armey’s Axioms, Dick Armey does just that. By skillfully breaking down complex social and moral issues, he presents us with such simple and direct answers that it’s hard not to agree with his logic. Wrapped in wry wit and humor, the book is wise, insightful, and above all, compelling." –Marlin Maddoux President, National Center for Freedom & Renewal host, Point of View radio talk show "In just ten years, Dick Armey moved from C-SPAN viewer to Majority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives. In Armey’s Axioms he presents some of the lessons he has learned from his years in the House and from country music. . . . It’s a good read, packed with good advice." –Michael Barone U.S. News & World Report coauthor, The Almanac of American Politics

In The Dark Forest, Earth is reeling from the revelation of a coming alien invasion-in just four centuries' time. The aliens' human collaborators may have been defeated, but the presence of the sophons, the subatomic particles that allow Trisolaris instant access to all human information, means that Earth's defense plans are totally exposed to the enemy. Only the human mind remains a secret. This is the motivation for the Wallfacer Project, a daring plan that grants four men enormous resources to design secret strategies, hidden through deceit and misdirection from Earth and Trisolaris alike. Three of the Wallfacers are influential statesmen and scientists, but the fourth is a total unknown. Luo Ji, an unambitious Chinese astronomer and sociologist, is baffled by his new status. All he knows is that he's the one Wallfacer that Trisolaris wants dead. Book Axiomatic Quality

Download or read book Axiomatic Quality written by Basem El-Haik and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2005-05-06 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to integrate axiomatic design and robust design fora comprehensive quality approach As the adoption of quality methods grows across various industries, its implementation is challenged by situations where statisticaltools are inadequate, yet the earlier a proactive quality system isintroduced into a given process, the greater the payback thesemethods will yield. Axiomatic Quality brings together two well-established theories, axiomatic design and robust design, to eliminate or reduce bothconceptual and operational weaknesses. Providing a completeframework for immediate implementation, this book guides designteams in producing systems that operate at high-quality levels foreach of their design requirements. And it shows the way towardsachieving the Six-Sigma target--six times the standard deviationcontained between the target and each side of the specificationlimits--for each requirement. This book develops an aggressive axiomatic quality approachthat: * Provides the tools to reduce conceptual weaknesses of systemsusing a framework called the conceptual design for capability * Reduces operational weaknesses of systems in terms of qualitylosses and control costs * Uses mathematical relationships to bridge the gap betweenscience-based engineering and quality methods Acclaro DFSS Light, a Java-based software package that implementsaxiomatic design processes, is available for download from a Wileyftp site. Acclaro DFSS Light is a software product of AxiomaticDesign Solutions, Inc. Laying out a comprehensive approach while working through eachaspect of its implementation, Axiomatic Quality is an essentialresource for managers, engineers, and other professionals who wantto successfully deploy the most advanced methodology to tacklesystem weaknesses and improve quality.

Book G del s Theorems and Zermelo s Axioms

Download or read book G del s Theorems and Zermelo s Axioms written by Lorenz Halbeisen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-16 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a concise and self-contained introduction to the foundations of mathematics. The first part covers the fundamental notions of mathematical logic, including logical axioms, formal proofs and the basics of model theory. Building on this, in the second and third part of the book the authors present detailed proofs of Gödel’s classical completeness and incompleteness theorems. In particular, the book includes a full proof of Gödel’s second incompleteness theorem which states that it is impossible to prove the consistency of arithmetic within its axioms. The final part is dedicated to an introduction into modern axiomatic set theory based on the Zermelo’s axioms, containing a presentation of Gödel’s constructible universe of sets. A recurring theme in the whole book consists of standard and non-standard models of several theories, such as Peano arithmetic, Presburger arithmetic and the real numbers. The book addresses undergraduate mathematics students and is suitable for a one or two semester introductory course into logic and set theory. Each chapter concludes with a list of exercises.

Book Intuitive Axiomatic Set Theory

Download or read book Intuitive Axiomatic Set Theory written by José L Garciá and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-04-04 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set theory can be rigorously and profitably studied through an intuitive approach, thus independently of formal logic. Nearly every branch of Mathematics depends upon set theory, and thus, knowledge of set theory is of interest to every mathematician. This book is addressed to all mathematicians and tries to convince them that this intuitive approach to axiomatic set theory is not only possible but also valuable. The book has two parts. The first one presents, from the sole intuition of "collection" and "object", the axiomatic ZFC-theory. Then, we present the basics of the theory: the axioms, well-orderings, ordinals and cardinals are the main subjects of this part. In all, one could say that we give some standard interpretation of set theory, but this standard interpretation results in a multiplicity of universes. The second part of the book deals with the independence proofs of the continuum hypothesis (CH) and the axiom of choice (AC), and forcing is introduced as a necessary tool, and again the theory is developed intuitively, without the use of formal logic. The independence results belong to the metatheory, as they refer to things that cannot be proved, but the greater part of the arguments leading to the independence results, including forcing, are purely set-theoretic. The book is self-contained and accessible to beginners in set theory. There are no prerequisites other than some knowledge of elementary mathematics. Full detailed proofs are given for all the results.

Book A Full Axiomatic Development of High School Geometry

Download or read book A Full Axiomatic Development of High School Geometry written by David M. Clark and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-02-13 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a full and complete axiomatic development of exactly that part of plane Euclidean geometry that forms the standard content of high school geometry. It begins with a set of points, a measure of distance between pairs of points and ten simple axioms. From there the notions of length, area and angle measure, along with congruence and similarity, are carefully defined and their properties proven as theorems. It concludes with a proof of the consistency of the axioms used and a full description of their models. It is provided in guided inquiry (inquiry-based) format with the intention that students will be active learners, proving the theorems and presenting their proofs to their class with the instructor as a mentor and a guide. The book is written for graduate and advanced undergraduate students interested in teaching secondary school mathematics, for pure math majors interested in learning about the foundations of geometry, for faculty preparing future secondary school teachers and as a reference for any professional mathematician. It is written with the hope of anchoring K-12 geometry in solid modern mathematics, thereby fortifying the teaching of secondary and tertiary geometry with a deep understanding of the subject.

Book excerpt: "The book of Lilith tells the real story of creation. Lilith is the first human to be given a soul by God following a thirteen billion year process of mechanical, soulless evolution. Her job is to give souls to all things and awaken them to the Watcher that watches the watcher, watching the world. The first person she grants a soul to is Adam, who is given a job of his own: to invent the definition of sin, create a moral sense in a world that utterly lacks one, and hence bring about the rule of law in a compassionate society. Unfortunately, Adam has a hard time accepting the fact that he was given his soul second, instead of first, and by Lilith, not God. The conflict this engenders leads to the destruction of Eden, the creation of Eve, and a voyage of self-discovery that spans a world"--P. [4] of cover.
