Book excerpt: Variable-amplitude axial-load fatigue tests were conducted on 7075-T6 aluminum-alloy edge-notched specimens having a theoretical elastic stress concentration factor of 4. The load programs were designed to approximate maneuver load spectra. Fatigue life was found to be shorter for random form tests than for block form tests having the same load spectrum. The greatest change in life occurred when the test program contained negative loads. Life for variable-amplitude tests was found to increase as much as 60 percent above the original test life after preloading with a program having a higher limit load factor. The summations of cycle ratios were approximately 2 for tests without negative loads but were approximately 1 for tests with negative loads.

Book excerpt: An investigation has been conducted to determine which combination of method counting and type of load programing best retains the essential fatigue-inducing characteristics of a random time history of stress. In an earlier investigation several time histories were numerically generated and counted by various methods. The data obtained in the earlier investigation were used in this investigation to conduct axial load fatigue tests of 2024-T3 aluminum-alloy sheet specimens with not d edges. The fatigue life obtained from tests using the random peak history was used as a basis of comparison. The elimination of various sized fluctuations, due to the different counting methods, had little, if any, effect on fatigue life in tests using a random sequence of loads. Tests conducted by using ordered loading produced lives greater than the random fatigue life. The value of life in the ordered tests varied with the counting method, with statistical properties of the time history, and probably with the assumptions made in reducing the data to block form.

In Part 1, a critical historical review highlights the significant advances in the literature concerned with analytical optimum design techniques for various structural elements, materials and thermal protection systems. The annotated bibliography is contained in Part 2. In Part 3, the current state of the art of the theory of optimum structural and thermostructural design is assessed. Included are the derivation of design indices resulting from various design requirements, a generalized presentation of optimum design theory and preferred methods of presenting optimum design results. Book excerpt: This book consists of a collection of lectures prepared for a short course on "Fracture Mechanics Methodology" sponsored by the Advisory Group for Aerospace Research and Development (AGARD), part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The course was organized jointly by Professor George C. Sih of the Institute of Fracture and Solid Mechanics at Lehigh University in the United States and Professor Luciano Faria from Centro de Mecanica e de Materiais das Universidade de Lisboa in Portugal. It was held in Lisbon from June 1 to 4, 1981. Dr. Robert Badaliance from the McDonnell Aircraft Company in St. Louis and Dr. Oscar Orringer from the Depart ment of Transportation in Cambridge are the other US lecturers while Professor Carlos Moura Branco from Portugal also lectured. The audience consisted of engineers from the Portuguese industry with a large portion from the aeronautical sector and others who are particularly interested to apply the fracture mechanics discipline for analyzing the integrity of structural components and fracture control methods. Particular. emphases were given to the fundamentals of fracture mechanics as applied to aircraft structures.
