Book excerpt: Jesus was a peasant day-laborer. His teachings and his miraculous deeds were revolutionary. When religious leaders saw Jesus walking up, out of frustration they would say "Oh shit! It's Jesus!" Jesus was trouble. He taught that God was more concerned about social justice and the loving restoration of individuals, rather than blind allegiance to an oppressive and irrelevant religious system. When Jesus would walk along the shore of a fishing village, a life hardened fisherman would see Jesus and joyfully shout out "Oh shit! It's Jesus!" After a hard day of labor, fishermen, women from the fields, and children would sit in the evening sun and listen to Jesus teach about the love and mercy God desires for everyone. The reality and message of Jesus' life are amazing. You may see organized religion and the church as a negative option for your spiritual life, but I encourage you to look at the actual life of Jesus as a positive choice for your spirituality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chorus of frightening voices began to cackle maniacally and chanted in a strange language. Diana picked up the fruit but dropped it when it burned her hand to the touch. To Greta’s horror, an upside-down cross was beginning to sear into the palm of Diana’s hand. Her eyes were solid white before she crumpled to the ground. “AHHH... FRESH MEAT, SO SWEET. WE’LL MAKE THE GODDESS PURR... PURR... PURR!” sniggered the evil being in a cacophony of guttural sounds. It took all the courage inside Greta to leap onto the levitated bed. While she struggled with the entity possessing her teammate, she was amazingly able to force the blood amulet over the demon’s neck. In that instant, the bed slammed to the ground. Diana sat up looking quite dazed as well. Greta inspected them before breaking her silence. “Are you both okay?” Shade was sobbing. “What happened? Why am I tied up? Please untie me. I’m so scared.” Diana was about to release Shade, but Greta immediately grew concerned. She wisely chose to keep it to herself because Diana still had the telling mark on her hand. I need to get Priest. He’s the only person who can fix this issue religiously.

When Cruz decides to use Lola to get to Smoke, he has no idea what he's taking on. A time bomb is ticking as Smoke, Lola, Cruz, and anyone unlucky enough to come into their orbit are caught up in a drama of abduction, car chases, and triple bluff, where escape or violent death look like the only options. Book Reading the Comments

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joseph M. Reagle, Jr.
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2015-05-01
  • ISBN : 0262328887
  • Pages : 241 pages

Download or read book Reading the Comments written by Joseph M. Reagle, Jr. and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What we can learn about human nature from the informative, manipulative, confusing, and amusing messages at the bottom of the web. Online comment can be informative or misleading, entertaining or maddening. Haters and manipulators often seem to monopolize the conversation. Some comments are off-topic, or even topic-less. In this book, Joseph Reagle urges us to read the comments. Conversations “on the bottom half of the Internet,” he argues, can tell us much about human nature and social behavior. Reagle visits communities of Amazon reviewers, fan fiction authors, online learners, scammers, freethinkers, and mean kids. He shows how comment can inform us (through reviews), improve us (through feedback), manipulate us (through fakery), alienate us (through hate), shape us (through social comparison), and perplex us. He finds pre-Internet historical antecedents of online comment in Michelin stars, professional criticism, and the wisdom of crowds. He discusses the techniques of online fakery (distinguishing makers, fakers, and takers), describes the emotional work of receiving and giving feedback, and examines the culture of trolls and haters, bullying, and misogyny. He considers the way comment—a nonstop stream of social quantification and ranking—affects our self-esteem and well-being. And he examines how comment is puzzling—short and asynchronous, these messages can be slap-dash, confusing, amusing, revealing, and weird, shedding context in their passage through the Internet, prompting readers to comment in turn, “WTF?!?”
