Book Post Operative Neuropsychiatric Disorder

Download or read book Post Operative Neuropsychiatric Disorder written by Chun Yang and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-03-08 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Post-operative neuropsychiatric disorder (POND) is a series of neuropsychiatric symptoms strongly linked to the triggering factors, anesthesia, and surgery exposure. The clinical manifestations mainly include delirium, cognitive dysfunction, and affective disorders after surgeries. POND is the most frequent postoperative complication in elderly patients, especially those undergoing major surgery, such as cardiac and hip surgeries. It has been well recognized that oxidative stress, abnormal changes in neurotransmitters and synapses, as well as Aβ deposition, and phosphorylation of tau protein are probably involved in the mechanisms of POND. Although studies on the POND are in full swing, underlying pathogenesis is still ambiguous because of conflicting results and controversial evidence. Currently, patients with POND still fail to receive effective treatments, although clinical studies in this field have focused on these potential therapeutic targets in the last decades. Most importantly, more than 320 million people are scheduled to undergo surgeries every year globally, it is, therefore, an urgent need to develop and provide effective therapeutic strategies for patients with POND.

Download or read book William Osler written by Michael Bliss and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2002-04-01 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his time the most famous physician in the world, Canadian-born William Osler (1849-1919) is still the best-known figure in the history of medicine. This new, definitive biography by Michael Bliss is the first full-scale life of Osler to appear since 1925. An award-winning medical historian, Bliss draws on many untapped sources to recreate Osler's life and medical times for a new generation of readers. Born at Bond Head, north of Toronto, Osler rose from obscurity to become the greatest medical teacher and writer in three countries. At Canada's McGill University, America's Johns Hopkins University, and finally as regius professor at Oxford, Osler was idolized by two generations of medical students and practitioners, for whom he came to personify the ideal doctor. His quest was to bring high standards and scientific methods into general practice in the medical world and to give teaching hospitals a solid place in the education of doctors. The publication of his book, The Principles and Practice of Medicine (1892), established him as the authority of modern medicine, a position he held well into the new century. Osler was revered as the high priest of the advent of twentieth-century medicine. In this fine biography, Michael Bliss animates the epic quality of Osler's life - not only in telling his personal story, but in setting that story against the dramatic backdrop of the coming of modern medicine. Winner of the Jason A. Hannah Medal, awarded by the Royal Society of Canada and the Hannah Institute for the History of Medicine

Book The High risk Surgical Patient

Download or read book The High risk Surgical Patient written by Paolo Aseni and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-07 with total page 952 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well known that certain diseases and patient conditions are associated with increased perioperative risk. The aim of this book is to define and identify the clinical factors that warrant a broader and more detailed assessment of pre-operative surgical risk in difficult and unusual clinical settings. One of the sections is dedicated to the main pathway of peri- and post-surgical critical care based on the patient-specific deterioration risk and associated diseases; here, a panel of selected experts describes the correct patient-oriented pathways for complex or unscheduled surgical operations in order to reduce the operative risk. In addition, the book describes the latest trends in minimally invasive surgical techniques that are associated with peri- and post-operative risk reduction, and provides an overview of recent advances in surgical simulation, focusing on perspectives in surgical research to increase patient safety. Guidance is also provided on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs), and their management in patients requiring emergency surgery. The book will help surgical trainees recognize cases with the highest surgical risk and identify the most common complications at an early stage.

Book Plastic Surgery in Wars Disasters and Civilian Life

Download or read book Plastic Surgery in Wars Disasters and Civilian Life written by Anthony Roberts and published by Frontline Books. This book was released on 2023-04-20 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The specialty of plastic surgery was developed and named by Sir Harold Gillies following his work between the two world wars reconstructing severely damaged servicemen from the First World War. Sir Harold went on to inspire and train other surgeons from around the world. Among them was his cousin Sir Archibald McIndoe, who in the Second World War set up the unit at East Grinstead Hospital which looked after severely burned airmen and some other servicemen. The airmen themselves set up the famous Guinea Pig Club which gave enormous social and often financial support to the severely injured. After the Second World War specialized burn units were created throughout the UK, including one at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, where Anthony Roberts served. After the number of war injuries had reduced, the burn unit for all three services was set up at RAF Halton, a few miles from Stoke Mandeville. A close relationship between the hospitals developed which led to military surgeons being posted to Stoke Mandeville for training in the care of burns and an introduction to plastic surgery. Most doctors will never be involved in a disaster during their working lives. Anthony Roberts was involved in treating casualties from the Bradford City football stadium fire in 1985 that claimed 56 lives and resulted in hundreds more being injured, many of them with severe burns. It had a major effect on him, and on all those involved. It started his appearances on the media and his overseas visits to other countries to talk about it. And subsequently he was asked to join and to lead other international efforts to provide help. He led the first British team from Stoke Mandeville that gave aid in Sarajevo during the war. He returned several times and has also given aid in three other war zones and six major disasters. Because of this involvement in all these situations Professor Roberts taught junior trainee surgeons from the three British services and those of several foreign countries. As well as his military involvement, Anthony Roberts spent sixteen years working with the Royal Protection Group at State occasions, and thirty years working as a motor racing track doctor including at Formula One level, providing immediate and vital treatment to drivers who suffered serious injuries and burns following accidents on the track and to spectators. There have been enormous changes in the specialty over the past fifty years and a detailed view of these is given in an absorbing account of this life-enhancing surgery by one who served on the frontline in difficult and dangerous situations around the world.
