Download or read book Not Fade Away written by Rebecca A. Alexander and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-09-11 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even a darkening world can be brilliantly lit from within. Born with a rare genetic mutation called Usher Syndrome type III, Rebecca Alexander has been simultaneously losing both her sight and hearing since she was a child, and was told that she would likely be completely blind and deaf by age 30. Then, at 18, a fall from a window left her athletic body completely shattered. None of us know what we would do in the face of such devastation. What Rebecca did was rise to every challenge she faced. She was losing her vision and hearing and her body was broken, but she refused to lose her drive, her zest for life and – maybe most importantly – her sense of humor. Now, at 35, with only a sliver of sight and significantly deteriorated hearing, she is a psychotherapist with two masters’ degrees from Columbia University, and an athlete who teaches spin classes and regularly competes in extreme endurance races. She greets every day as if it were a gift, with boundless energy, innate curiosity, and a strength of spirit that have led her to places we can't imagine. In Not Fade Away, Rebecca tells her extraordinary story, by turns harrowing, funny and inspiring. She meditates on what she’s lost—from the sound of a whisper to seeing a sky full of stars, and what she’s found in return—an exquisite sense of intimacy with those she is closest to, a love of silence, a profound gratitude for everything she still has, and a joy in simple pleasures that most of us forget to notice. Not Fade Away is both a memoir of the senses and a unique look at the obstacles we all face—physical, psychological, and philosophical—exploring the extraordinary powers of memory, love, and perseverance. It is a gripping story, an offering of hope and motivation, and an exquisite reminder to live each day to its fullest.

Download or read book MY INCREDIBLE JOURNEY written by Troy L. Palmer and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-08-22 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I came from a poor family, but was afforded all the opportunities to make myself a better person than my parents, who did not have those opportunities. My childhood days were hard living on a farm, getting up early in the morning, doing my chores and then walking two miles to school. My high school days was not as good as expected and I put that to the conditions under which I had to deal with, living away from home, sometimes under unpleasant situations, and then getting up at 5:00 am to travel by train to Georgetown to get to school. I remember reading that Abraham Lincoln had to walk six miles per day to go to school, and he became one of the best President of the United States of America. My studies were cut short to assist my family when they were faced with major problems. I realized that the experience I gained by joining the SSU made me a better person. As I began my life anew I was determined to be successful in whatever my endeavors were. Success comes with hard work and perseverance and I took advantage of all the windows of opportunities that came my way, like forming Patrician Phone Corporation and South Jamaica Services, and running for Congress. To the readers of my autobiography, especially the younger generation, I want to tell you that the sky is not the limit. There are many opportunities out there, you have to take the time to look for what interests you. If I had to live my life over again, I would probably do the same things all over again, but I think with less mistakes. I have no regrets because I did it my all way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I chose my title Fallen from a Tree because I fell from my tree stand, and so to speak, Adam and Eve also fell from a tree in the Garden of Eden.I enjoy archery hunting and had no idea what was about to happen. My tree stand always was safe. But suddenly, the tree stand broke, and I was falling from fifteen feet high. My body fell helplessly to the ground. I landed on my shoulder blades. I had the wind knocked out of me. I reached for my phone. The battery was low and only had 5 percent battery life. I called my friends for help.At the hospital, I was given a CAT scan and X-rays. I had five broken ribs. Two days later, I started coughing and passed out while my brother Michael went for a nurse for help. I was dying. This book is about my near-death experience and my journey to visit God and heaven. I want to be able to share my experience and pain with people who have illnesses and doubts about God and heaven. God and heaven are real!I want to be encouraging to all people-those who are dying and those who have illnesses. It was a struggle for me to rehabilitate. I did not know if I would be able to walk, talk, eat, and drink and had to learn how to do these things all over again. I developed an understanding for handicapped people and those who have trouble communicating thoughts and language.Rehabilitation was very important to my recovery process. I worked very hard, wanting to succeed and give strength to my body and mind. I ended up having a total of eleven broken ribs. It was very painful to move.God wrote this book for us to share. He is the author of the book, and He wanted me to be coauthor. I fell from my tree stand and visited God. It was an amazing journey!

Download or read book Sister Queens written by Julia Fox and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2012-01-31 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER The history books have cast Katherine of Aragon, the first queen of King Henry VIII of England, as the ultimate symbol of the Betrayed Woman, cruelly tossed aside in favor of her husband’s seductive mistress, Anne Boleyn. Katherine’s sister, Juana of Castile, wife of Philip of Burgundy and mother of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, is portrayed as “Juana the Mad,” whose erratic behavior included keeping her beloved late husband’s coffin beside her for years. But historian Julia Fox, whose previous work painted an unprecedented portrait of Jane Boleyn, Anne’s sister, offers deeper insight in this first dual biography of Katherine and Juana, the daughters of Spain’s Ferdinand and Isabella, whose family ties remained strong despite their separation. Looking through the lens of their Spanish origins, Fox reveals these queens as flesh-and-blood women—equipped with character, intelligence, and conviction—who are worthy historical figures in their own right. When they were young, Juana’s and Katherine’s futures appeared promising. They had secured politically advantageous marriages, but their dreams of love and power quickly dissolved, and the unions for which they’d spent their whole lives preparing were fraught with duplicity and betrayal. Juana, the elder sister, unexpectedly became Spain’s sovereign, but her authority was continually usurped, first by her husband and later by her son. Katherine, a young widow after the death of Prince Arthur of Wales, soon remarried his doting brother Henry and later became a key figure in a drama that altered England’s religious landscape. Ousted from the positions of power and influence they had been groomed for and separated from their children, Katherine and Juana each turned to their rich and abiding faith and deep personal belief in their family’s dynastic legacy to cope with their enduring hardships. Sister Queens is a gripping tale of love, duty, and sacrifice—a remarkable reflection on the conflict between ambition and loyalty during an age when the greatest sin, it seems, was to have been born a woman.
