Download or read book Oxford Weather and Climate since 1767 written by Stephen Burt and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-30 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British have always been obsessed by the weather. Thomas Hornsby, who founded the Radcliffe Observatory in Oxford in 1772, began weather observations at the site. They continue daily to this day, unbroken since 14 November 1813, the longest continuous series of single-site weather records in the British Isles, and one of the longest in the world. Oxford Weather and Climate since 1767 represents the first full publication of this newly-digitised record of English weather, which will appeal to interested readers and climate researchers alike. The book celebrates this unique and priceless Georgian legacy by describing and explaining how the records were (and still are) made, examines monthly and seasonal weather patterns across two centuries, and considers the context of long-term climate change. Local documentary sources and contemporary photographs bring the statistics to life, from the clouds of 'smoak' from the Great Fire of London in 1666 to the most recent floods. This book explores all the weather extremes, from bitter cold winters to hot, dry summers, bringing to life the painstaking measurements made over the last 250 years.

Download or read book China Since the Gang of Four written by Bill Brugger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1980, addresses the questions raised by the death of Mao Zedong and the arrest of the ‘Gang of Four’. Was China reverting to a capitalist form of development, and abandoning Mao’s policies? Was China’s leadership remaining loyal to Mao’s strategy but correcting damage done by the ‘Gang of Four’? The essays in this book analyse these questions and illustrate differences in interpretation amongst the post-Mao leadership. Individual chapters deal with disagreements over political line, the role of the CCP, economic policy and industrial management, policy towards the rural sector, controversies over the role of art and literature, the nature and function of the education system and the incorporation of China into the international economy.

This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2nd International Symposium on Trichoptera was held at the University of Reading, England, 25-29 July 1977. It attracted 68 participants from 22 countries, which was a gratifying response to the circulation of about 250 workers on caddis flies. It was H. MALICKY who appreciated the need for a specialized meeting of this kind and organized the 1st International Symposium on Trichoptera, which was held at Lunz am See, Austria, 16-20 September 1974. This volume of Proceedings includes 38 papers; all except one were presented and discussed in the sessions listed in the programme. The papers were given in a lecture theatre of the Palmer Building, and demonstrations were laid out in a laboratory of the Department of Zoology where members met for their mprning and afternoon breaks. Members were accommodated in St Patrick's Hall, one of the University Halls of Residence. They were the guests of the University at an informal reception on 25 July. On the afternoon of 27 July an excursion was made to the River Lambourn at Bagnor near NeWbUry. This chalk stream has been the subject of an ecological study by a team from the Department of Zoology since 1970. The excursion was also an opportunity to see something of the local caddis fauna, and to do some collecting. The final session on 29 July, under the chairmanship of G. B. WIGGINS, was followed by a discussion on future plans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Power was at the heart of FDR's relationship with the media: the power of the nation's chief executive to control his public messages versus the power of the free press to act as an independent watchdog over the president and the government. This compelling study points to Roosevelt's consummate news management as a key to his political artistry and leadership legacy.

Book excerpt: Railways have played an immense part in the history of New South Wales. The parallel lines extended as the population grew and themselves made possible new settlement and new industries. Railways crossed the mountain barriers that surround Sydney and opened up both the vast hinterland and the northern and southern coasts. Railways joined every part of New South Wales to Sydney in a distinctive, centralized pattern. They also joined New South Wales to the neighbouring colonies and states.
