The contributors have, at various times, been associated with him either as pupils or colleagues during his four decades at Oxford. Their articles, in the diversity of subject-matter and time-span which they encompass, reflect the catholic historical sympathy which was always Freddie Madden's hallmark as a historian; whilst their coherence around the central theme of the growth and demise of Western empire testify to the vitality of that imperial historiographic tradition which was the preeminent concern of his activities both as teacher and scholar.

Download or read book A New Kind of War written by Howard Jones and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997-05-15 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's experience in Greece has often been cited as a model by those later policymakers in Washington who regard the involvement as a "victory" for American foreign policy. Indeed, President Johnson and others referred to Greece as the model for America's deepening involvement in Vietnam during the mid-1960's. Greece became the battlefield for a new kind of war--one that included the use of guerrilla warfare, propaganda, war in the shadows, terror tactics and victory based on outlasting the enemy. It was also a test before the world of America's resolve to protect the principle of self-determination. Jones argues that American policy towards Greece was the focal point in the development of a global strategy designed to combat totalitarianism. He also argues that had the White House and others drawn the real "lessons" from the intervention in Greece, the decisions regarding Vietnam might have been more carefully thought out.
Download or read book At the Center written by Casey Nelson Blake and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-12-03 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when American political and cultural leaders asserted that the nation stood at “the center of world awareness,” thinkers and artists sought to understand and secure principles that lay at the center of things. From the onset of the Cold War in 1948 through 1963, they asked: What defined the essential character of “American culture”? Could permanent moral standards guide human conduct amid the flux and horrors of history? In what ways did a stable self emerge through the life cycle? Could scientific method rescue truth from error, illusion, and myth? Are there key elements to democracy, to the integrity of a society, to order in the world? Answers to such questions promised intellectual and moral stability in an age haunted by the memory of world war and the possibility of future devastation on an even greater scale. Yet other key figures rejected the search for a center, asserting that freedom lay in the dispersion of cultural energies and the plurality of American experiences. In probing the centering impulse of the era, At the Center offers a unique perspective on the United States at the pinnacle of its power.

Download or read book The World of Protracted Conflicts written by Michael Brecher and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-05-26 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World of Protracted Conflicts seeks to frame the models to answer three crucial questions about interstate protracted conflict: what are the most likely conditions for the onset of a protracted conflict, its escalation/persistence, and its termination? It presents the findings on protracted conflict occurrence, continuation, and resolution through testing these models and their derived hypotheses against the evidence from 33 interstate protracted conflicts in the last century. These findings will, in turn, shed further light on the conflict-crisis-war linkage. This book examines and explains patterns that exist in the eruption, evolution, and winding down of these conflicts through a systematic comparison of recent and contemporary PCs.
