But what Cyndi learned about her father years after his death completely shook her to the core. It’s been said that chaos brings people closer together. Book Birth Control Sex and Marriage in Britain 1918 1960

Download or read book Birth Control Sex and Marriage in Britain 1918 1960 written by Kate Fisher and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-07-13 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first half of the twentieth century witnessed a revolution in contraceptive behaviour as the large Victorian family disappeared. This book offers a new perspective on the gender relations, sexual attitudes, and contraceptive practices that accompanied the emergence of the smaller family in modern Britain. Kate Fisher draws on a range of first-hand evidence, including over 190 oral history interviews, in which individuals born between 1900 and 1930 described their marriages and sexual relationships. By using individual testimony she challenges many of the key conditions that have long been envisaged by demographic and historical scholars as necessary for any significant reduction in average family size to take place. Dr Fisher demonstrates that a massive expansion in birth control took place in a society in which sexual ignorance was widespread; that effective family limitation was achieved without the mass adoption of new contraceptive technologies; that traditional methods, such as withdrawal, abstinence, and abortion were often seen as preferable to modern appliances, such as condoms and caps; that communication between spouses was not key to the systematic adoption of contraception; and, above all, that women were not necessarily the driving force behind the attempt to avoid pregnancy. Women frequently avoided involvement in family planning decisions and practices, whereas the vast majority of men in Britain from the interwar period onward viewed the regular use of birth control as a masculine duty and obligation. By allowing this generation to speak for themselves, Kate Fisher produces a richer understanding of the often startling social attitudes and complex conjugal dynamics that lay behind the vast changes in contraceptive behaviour and family size in the twentieth century.

Book Ancestral Chains DNA Part VIII of VIII Andrew Bloodline

Download or read book Ancestral Chains DNA Part VIII of VIII Andrew Bloodline written by Mark D Bishop and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-07-10 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ancestral trail through two English counties inhabited by everyday, church-going country folk. Great-grandmother Mary Brewer Andrew was to grow up in a sheltered Cornish village founded by a Welsh saint, but fate found her transported across the country to Suffolk, where she was to find the man of her dreams and start an idyllic family. Life was good and prosperous as a butcher's wife, the only real tragedy being in WWII with the loss of her youngest child. Yet her own childhood and ancestry tell a tale of death and hardship. Pealing back the pages of the lives of her immediate parents' family, who were agricultural labourers, is a story unto itself. Some ancestors did run successful businesses though. They were millers; but even millers can fall foul of the law, which has necessitated a detailed look into the life inside the notorious Bodmin jail. Chilling though its stories are, the place is now a museum, a skylight looking down into how things should not have been, but how history & karma affect us all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the challenging years between the Great War and the Second World War, ordinary people find themselves pushed to their limits. In La Strada Da Seguire, Susan Toscan uses fiction—inspired by her own history—to tell the tales of two seemingly unrelated communities, one in Australia and the other in Italy. In the 1930s in Griffith, New South Wales, an emerging major farming district, a family diligently works to build a life on their farm. When Italian migrants move to the town, bringing invaluable knowledge and a commitment to hard work, thriving businesses are born. The new neighbours struggle to develop a successful multicultural society. Things are no easier in Italy. In the uncertain years following the Great War, everyone hopes for some stability. Barely recovered from the Great War, they now find themselves caught up in the inescapable wave of another. Desperate for change, a young woman looks for an escape from her frightfully mundane existence. As the Second World War breaks out, the young men from both of these communities are called to service. Ripped from the only lives they know and the relative safety of home, they must face an unpredictable future with as much dignity and bravery as they can muster, against forces and events far beyond their control. Life, love, and tragedy are all part of the new world, and the members of these communities must now choose between being victims—or survivors.

This community grew to love its football team and supported it passionately. Through the perspective of Foley High School, we see one of the most tumultuous times in our nation’s history, a period that defined the history of the United States. These individuals lived through the Great Depression and two World Wars to emerge as the greatest and most powerful country in the history of our planet. Our citizens, not only in Foley but also throughout every corner of our nation, were guided by a deep respect and reverence for the Bible. Our hope and prayer is that this book will serve as a reminder of our Christian heritage and the importance of seeking the guidance of our Creator in everything we do if we hope to remain free and strong.

Book Vanity Fair 100 Years

Download or read book Vanity Fair 100 Years written by Graydon Carter and published by ABRAMS. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vanity Fair 100 Years showcases a century of personality and power, art and commerce, crisis and culture—both highbrow and low—in this collection of images that graced the pages of magazine, and some published for the very first time. From its inception in 1913, through the Jazz Age and the Depression, to its reincarnation in the boom-boom Reagan years, to the image-saturated Information Age, Vanity Fair has presented the modern era as it has unfolded, using wit, imagination, peerless literary narrative, and bold, groundbreaking imagery from the greatest photographers, artists, and illustrators of the day. Edited by Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter, this sumptuous book takes a decade-by-decade look at the world as seen by the magazine, stopping to describe the incomparable editor Frank Crowninshield and the birth of the Jazz Age Vanity Fair, the magazine’s controversial rebirth in 1983, and the history of the glamorous Vanity Fair Oscar Party. “The book is a stunning artifact that begets staring, less for the words and publishing industry than as an exercise in visual storytelling reflected through the prism of society and celebrity. The best photographers, the best designers, the best illustrators all came together over Vanity Fair’s contents, and the book unfolds in page after page of stunningly rendered images, some iconic and some that never even ran.” —New York Times Book Review

Book Kotex Kleenex Huggies

Download or read book Kotex Kleenex Huggies written by Thomas Heinrich and published by Ohio State University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the core of Kotex, Kleenex, Huggies is the riveting story of Kimberly-Clark, a Wisconsin paper company that became a pioneer of personal hygiene products in the twentieth century. Its first big commercial success was Kotex, which came from sanitary wound bandages developed in World War I. Similarly, Kleenex evolved from Army gas mask filters into disposable handkerchiefs and became the company's most reliable profit maker. Finally, Huggies turned Kimberly-Clark into a leading player in the highly competitive diaper market of the 1970s and 1980s. In addition to tracing Kimberly-Clark's fascinating history of technology development and product diversification, Heinrich and Batchelor explore momentous changes in consumer behavior and marketing. When Kotex first arrived on the scene in the 1920s, menstrual hygiene was burdened with cultural taboos that made it impossible for many women to ask the (inevitably male) pharmacist for a sanitary napkin. To solve such vexing marketing problems, Kimberly-Clark invented the artificial word Kotex and inserted it into consumer vocabulary through massive advertising campaigns. Making it easier for women to shop for the new product. Kimberly-Clark also recommended that stores place boxes of Kotex on the counter where women could help themselves without embarrassing conversation, thus pioneering the concept of self-service.
