Download or read book Believe in Your Own Fairytale written by Kay-Marie Fletcher and published by Elm Hill. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Believe In Your Own Fairytale narrates a young woman’s quest to achieve dreams all thought impossible. While being raised in a poor, black household on a small island does not make one the perfect candidate for a happily-ever-after, Fletcher shows that fairytales are real for those who find the magic in themselves. It is a journey of self-discovery, relationship with God and overcoming hardships including grief, disappointment, depression, poverty, anxiety and overcoming many psychological barriers to manifest true purpose. If you’ve ever doubted that your dreams are too big or maybe never believed in fairytales at all, then this is the book for you. It is designed for all the wanderers, dreamers and every person who has felt like their goals were so big it scared them and everyone else around them. It is for those who lack support from others and struggle daily to achieve their lifelong goals. Yuh’ see when you’re born in 1990 and yuh’ grow up as an only child to a poor, black, single-parent mother in the Caribbean, wanting to become a New York Times best-selling author and broadcast journalist living in the big apple seems like a real FAIRYTALE. My childhood dream of becoming the “Caribbean Carrie Bradshaw” was often mocked and turned away by locals who told me, “give up Kay-Marie dem’ ting’ does only happen in books and movies”. Determined to prove everyone wrong and do so by age 25, I set out on the pursuit of happiness as a young, naïve but strong-minded island-girl. However, my journey to achieve these goals was often disrupted by many hardships and this book details how I dealt with them. These include grief, disappointment, depression, and poverty, anxiety, crossing geographical borders and overcoming many psychological barriers. The unexpected death of my grandmother and uncle, which made me struggle to complete university, was just one of many. This caused me great turmoil, since Education had to be my ticket into a better life. After being rejected to do my post-grad studies in the U.S., I was forced to take an ordinary desk job to earn a living. Meanwhile, I hoped that finding true love would be a worthy compromise. Sadly, I looked for it in all the wrong guys. Luckily, I landed my dream job as a journalist at the largest local news station back home. Soon after taking it however, my old dream resurfaced and I was finally given the chance to migrate to the United States. By then, I had to choose between giving up the life I’d always imagined overseas and accepting what seemed to be my new fate in Trinidad. But, what happened next completely overturned my life. After surviving a horrific car accident on my 25th birthday, I woke up to an epiphany that my fairytale was much more than just becoming a big city girl. Taking a leap of faith to go after my dreams, developing a relationship with God, and discovering my true purpose in life became my real happily ever after. This book also gives an entirely new outlook to the traditional concept of what we know a ‘fairytale’ to be. Unlike others, each chapter unravels a whole new definition of the term ‘fairytale’ and intends to convince the minds of those who never believed in fairytales at all. When you read this book you will discover that your fairytales are your dreams, your purpose, your truth, your vision, your deepest thoughts, your inner magic, your baby, your goals, your prophetic call, your diamond, your destiny, and your recipe for success, just to name a few. Book excerpt: It wasn’t until she was nineteen that Agata Tuszyńska, one of Poland’s most admired poets and cultural historians, discovered that she was Jewish. In this profoundly moving and resonant work, she uncovers the truth about her family’s history—a mother who entered the Warsaw Ghetto at age eight and escaped just before the uprising; a father, one of five thousand Polish soldiers taken prisoner in 1939, who would become the country’s most famous radio sports announcer; and other relatives and their mysterious pasts—as she tries to make sense of anti-Semitism in her country. The poignant story of one woman coming to terms with herself, Family History of Fear is also a searing portrait of Polish Jewish life, before and after Hitler’s Third Reich.

Book excerpt: "In Her Father's Eyes sheds light on a fascinating but underexamined corner of Central Europe, where anti-Jewish measures often exceeded Nazi Germany's in their harshness. By bridging prewar and wartime periods, the diary also provides a rich context for understanding the history from which the Holocaust emerged. And all the while, it remains a moving story of a father's profound love for his only child."--BOOK JACKET.

Download or read book The Best of My Life written by Judith Leet and published by Macmillan Reference USA. This book was released on 1987 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original anthology brings together a thought-provoking collection of such personal writings in many different forms: memoirs, reminiscences, letters, intimate essays, and formal autobiographies. Following the rhythms of life from childhood through old age, Editor Leet arranges the selections so readers view the meanins of life through others' eyes, observing the influences and the inspirations, the challenges and the crises, the struggles and the successes that shape people and their destinies. In these pages we are admitted to the close company of another's mind and spirit - to discover and experience a totally different life - the life of an heiress, of a child prodigy, of an anthropologist, of a vice president thrust unexpectedly into the presidency, of those who require solitude, and of those who demand activity. We also gain perspective on the range of motivations people have for writing their autobiographies: from the vanity that propelled Ben Franklin to record his rise, to the intensity of diarist Anne Frank's loneliness and the honet self-examination of writer may Sarton.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, breastfeeding has been prominently in the public eye in relation to debates on issues ranging from parental leave policies, work−family balance, public decency, the safety of our food supply, and public health concerns such as health care costs and the obesity “epidemic.” Breastfeeding has officially been considered “the one best way” for feeding infants for the past 150 years of Canadian history. This book examines the history and evolution of breastfeeding policies and practices in Canada from the end of the nineteenth century to the turn of the twenty-first. The authors’ historical approach allows current debates to be situated within a broader social, political, cultural, and economic context. Breastfeeding shifted from a private matter to a public concern at the end of the nineteenth century. Over the course of the next century, the “best” way to feed infants was often scientifically or politically determined, and guidelines for mothers shifted from one generation to the next. Drawing upon government reports, academic journals, archival sources, and interviews with policy-makers and breastfeeding advocates, the authors trace trends, patterns, ideologies, and policies of breastfeeding in Canada.

Download or read book Twice as Hard written by Jasmine Brown and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2023-01-24 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black women physicians’ stories have gone untold for far too long, leaving gaping holes in American medical history, in women’s history, and in black history. It’s time to set the record straight No real account of black women physicians in the US exists, and what little mention is made of these women in existing histories is often insubstantial or altogether incorrect. In this work of extensive research, Jasmine Brown offers a rich new perspective, penning the long-erased stories of nine pioneering black women physicians beginning in 1860, when a black woman first entered medical school. Brown champions these black women physicians, including the stories of: · Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler, who graduated from medical school only fourteen months after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed and provided medical care for the newly freed slaves who had been neglected and exploited by the medical system. · Dr. Edith Irby Jones, the first African American to attend a previously white-only medical school in the Jim Crow South, where she was not allowed to eat lunch with her classmates or use the women’s bathroom. Still, Dr. Irby Jones persisted and graduated from medical school, going on to directly inspire other black women to pursue medicine such as . . . · Dr. Joycelyn Elders, who, after meeting Dr. Irby Jones, changed her career ambitions from becoming a Dillard’s salesclerk to becoming a doctor. In 1993, President Bill Clinton appointed Dr. Elders as the US surgeon general, making her the first African American and second woman to hold this position. Brown tells the stories of these doctors from the perspective of a black woman in medicine. Her journey as a medical student already has parallels to those of black women who entered medicine generations before her. What she uncovers about these women’s struggles, their need to work twice as hard and be twice as good, and their ultimate success serves as instruction and inspiration for new generations considering a career in medicine or science.

Book excerpt: "During the century 1850-1950 Vancouver Island attracted Imperial officers and other Imperials from India, the British Isles, and elsewhere in the Empire. Victoria was the main British port on the north-west Pacific Coast for forty years before the city of Vancouver was founded in 1886 to be the coastal terminus of the Canadian Pacific Railway. These two coastal cities were historically and geographically different. The Island joined Canada in 1871 and thirty-five years later the Royal Navy withdrew from Esquimalt, but Island communities did not lose their Imperial character until the 1950s."--P. [4] of cover.

Download or read book The Birth of Cool written by Carol Tulloch and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-28 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is broadly recognized that black style had a clear and profound influence on the history of dress in the twentieth century, with black culture and fashion having long been defined as 'cool'. Yet despite this high profile, in-depth explorations of the culture and history of style and dress in the African diaspora are a relatively recent area of enquiry. The Birth of Cool asserts that 'cool' is seen as an arbiter of presence, and relates how both iconic and 'ordinary' black individuals and groups have marked out their lives through the styling of their bodies. Focusing on counter- and sub-cultural contexts, this book investigates the role of dress in the creation and assertion of black identity. From the gardenia corsage worn by Billie Holiday to the work-wear of female African-Jamaican market traders, through to the home-dressmaking of black Britons in the 1960s, and the meaning of a polo-neck jumper as depicted in a 1934 self-portrait by African-American artist Malvin Gray Johnson, this study looks at the ways in which the diaspora experience is expressed through self-image. Spanning the late nineteenth century to the modern day, the book draws on ready-made and homemade fashion, photographs, paintings and films, published and unpublished biographies and letters from Britain, Jamaica, South Africa, and the United States to consider how personal style statements reflect issues of racial and cultural difference. The Birth of Cool is a powerful exploration of how style and dress both initiate and confirm change, and the ways in which they expresses identity and resistance in black culture.
