Fascinating' DAILY MAIL 'The writer who got closest to the human truth about our long-serving senior royals' THE TIMES 'The book overflows with nuggets of insider knowledge' TELEGRAPH Paints a unique picture of the remarkable woman who reigned for seven decades. Fascinating insights' HELLO! __________ Gyles Brandreth first met the Queen in 1968, when he was twenty. Over the next fifty years he met her many times, both at public and at private events. Through his friendship with the Duke of Edinburgh, he was given privileged access to Elizabeth II. He kept a record of all those encounters, and his conversations with the Queen over the years, his meetings with her family and friends, and his observations of her at close quarters are what make this very personal account of her extraordinary life uniquely fascinating. From her childhood in the 1920s to the era of Harry and Meghan in the 2020s, from her war years at Windsor Castle to her death at Balmoral, this is both a record of a tumultuous century of royal history and a truly intimate portrait of a remarkable woman. __________ Praise for Gyles Brandreth's bestselling royal writing: 'Beautifully written book. Download or read book In Stockmen s Footsteps written by Jane Grieve and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 2013-03-25 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peopled by many of the legends of the Australian outback, this is the extraordinary true story of how one ordinary woman grew up to champion Australia's outback heritage. Jane Grieve was born and raised on a farm on the Darling Downs in Queensland. She grew up with the wind in her hair and the rich black Darling Downs soil between her barefoot toes, her vivid imagination captivated by the tales of her Colonial forebears and the romantic notion of Australia's outback. From the outset she was determined that her life was not going to run along conventional lines; and nor did it. While working for architect Bill Durack, brother of legendary Australian identities Mary and Elizabeth Durack, she met R.M. Williams. R.M. exhorted her to work with him, Hugh Sawrey, Mary Durack, Bob Katter Snr, Ranald Chandler, Sir James Walker and other prominent Australians to build a very special monument. This is the previously untold story of the establishment of one of Australia's foremost Bicentennial projects - the Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame and Outback Heritage Centre - at Longreach in Queensland. Told through the eyes of a person whose role in the inner sanctum was pivotal to its success, it is an extraordinary true story of the legendary identities, selfless determination and sheer hard work involved in the creation of what was intended as a Mecca for all Australians.

Book excerpt: The Christopher Saga Continues This sequel to “Mark My Words” tells the story of Elijah Edwards, current patriarch of the Edwards branch of the Christopher family and first cousin to Allan Beckley Christopher. Eli bears the legacy of a wealthy, powerful African-American family with generations of old money. He has also inherited a “gift”—one that can bring happiness, joy, pain or tragedy randomly. From his power couple parents, Eli learned the values of family, service, commitment, integrity, work ethics and the responsibility that came with wealth. His is a family that sets standards rather than follows them, and the Edwards family has put their stamp prominently on the community. He knows well the family motto: “You never know what hand in life you’ll be dealt.” Will Eli’s “gift”, however, help him or hurt him when he needs it most? Through his wife of fifty-seven years, his sister, his children, nephews and niece, we will learn of the influence he and his “gift” have had on their lives. The time is 2007; the place, Minneapolis. BOOK ENDORSEMENT: From the profound, prolific pen of W. Foster-Graham—a longtime brother, classmate, bandmate, bass singer and friend—comes a must-read classic gem, You Never Know. The scope, depth, and breadth of his work comes as no surprise to me! I have shared the stage with W. Foster-Graham since elementary school with Twin Cities Talented Youth at Orchestra Hall, with the Minnesota Orchestra. Even at that early age, he exhibited brilliance and exceptional insight. Those qualities are magnificently manifested in the outstanding craftsmanship of You Never Know. W. Foster-Graham takes the reader on an intricate, intimate, and intriguing journey through the individual and interactive life experiences of the Edwards branch of the Christopher family. Their story is told through the focus of patriarch Elijah Edwards and yet, W. Foster-Graham’s uniquely engaging style makes the reader feel as though they are experiencing this amazing journey firsthand! You will be thoroughly fascinated by You Never Know. Do not deprive yourself of this life-changing masterpiece! Gary D. Hines Music Director and Producer 3-Time Grammy Award-Winning Sounds of Blackness

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and our new King Charles III coming to the throne, what better time than now to probe into the merits of the monarchy? Charles Neilson Gattey provides the reader with an insight into the concept of the constitutional monarch, whose role, he states, is to look after the long-term interests of the nation above the changing spectrum of party political strife. "While monarchy is mainly a conservative force, helping to maintain stability, this very fundamental stability", Gattey argues, "enables the country to absorb more radical changes in its political and social structure than would otherwise be possible without the risk of disorder". Whilst 12 countries in Europe still continue to retain their monarchs, the death of Queen Elizabeth II has revived the debate about the future of the British Commonwealth and the transitioning to a republic state, with the removal of King Charles III as head of state. Crowning Glory offers the reader a perspective to this ongoing and highly relevant debate.

Book The Adventures Of Augie March

Download or read book The Adventures Of Augie March written by Saul Bellow and published by Odyssey Editions. This book was released on 2010-07-21 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great novel of the American dream, of “the universal eligibility to be noble,” Saul Bellow’s third book charts the picaresque journey of one schemer, chancer, romantic, and holy fool: Augie March. Awarded the National Book Award in 1953, The Adventures of Augie March remains one of the classics of American literature. An impulsively active, irresistibly charming and resolutely free-spirited man, Augie March leaves his family of poor Jewish immigrants behind and sets off in search of reality, fulfillment, and most importantly, love. During his exultant quest, he latches on to a series of dubious schemes – from stealing books and smuggling immigrants to training a temperamental eagle to hunt lizards – and strong-minded women – from the fiery, eagle-owning Thea Fenchel, to the sneaky and alluring Stella. As Augie travels from the depths of poverty to the peaks of worldly success, he stands as an irresistible, poignant incarnation of the American idea of freedom. Written in the cascades of brilliant, biting, ravishing prose that would come to be known as “Bellovian,” The Adventures of Augie March re-wrote the language of Saul Bellow’s generation.

Book Ester and Ruzya

Download or read book Ester and Ruzya written by Masha Gessen and published by Dial Press. This book was released on 2008-12-30 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this “extraordinary family memoir,”* the National Book Award–winning author of The Future Is History reveals the story of her two grandmothers, who defied Fascism and Communism during a time when tyranny reigned. *The New York Times Book Review In the 1930s, as waves of war and persecution were crashing over Europe, two young Jewish women began separate journeys of survival. Ester Goldberg was a rebel from Bialystok, Poland, where virtually the entire Jewish community would be sent to Hitler’s concentration camps. Ruzya Solodovnik was a Russian-born intellectual who would become a high-level censor under Stalin’s regime. At war’s end, both women found themselves in Moscow. Over the years each woman had to find her way in a country that aimed to make every citizen a cog in the wheel of murder and repression. One became a hero in her children’s and grandchildren’s eyes; the other became a collaborator. With grace, candor, and meticulous research, Masha Gessen, one of the most trenchant observers of Russia and its history today, peels back the layers of time to reveal her grandmothers’ lives—and to show that neither story is quite what it seems. Praise for Masha Gessen “One of the most important activists and journalists Russia has known in a generation.”—David Remnick, The New Yorker “Masha Gessen is humbly erudite, deftly unconventional, and courageously honest.”—Timothy Snyder, author of On Tyranny
